If PayPal represents the future of crypto, then the future is stupid

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 09:56 AM PDT

Regarding the PayPal announcement, let's be clear: PayPal is not selling or letting anyone use crypto. They are selling and letting people use numbers on a spreadsheet somewhere that are pegged to the prices of those cryptos.

This announcement discourages me. I suspect this is a preview of what will probably end up being more and more popular. An increasing amount of walled gardens of "crypto" will spring up, tightly restricting how, when, and where people can use their fake crypto. People will end up completely disconnected from the real thing, never actually having their own private keys.

I can see a possible future where BTC becomes the de facto world currency despite its completely crippled state. PayPal and other companies will simply let people think they are using Bitcoin when they're really not, and then use the blockchain as a settlement layer. And then we're right back in a central bank dystopia.

Maybe I'm just being a little dramatic. Am I wrong to despair? Are there market forces that will prevent the scenario I have imagined? What do you think?

    CashSQL Flipstarter has failed

The CashSQL Flipstarter has failed to reach the funding level and is now expired.

Thanks to the following pledgers who saw value in this system and potential use-cases:

Also, thanks to the admin for letting me promote this flipstarter on this sub (various times) and for the devs of flipstarter who helped fix issues in real-time and making this experiment possible.

Both Lightning Network LND node vulnerabilities were made public today

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 10:42 AM PDT

Both Lightning Network CVE's were made public today. This is a follow up to the discovery 12 days ago.

[Lightning-dev] CVE-2020-26895: LND Low-S Tx-Relay Standardness (click to read full disclosure)

Prior to v0.10.0-beta, a malicious peer could force an lnd node to accept a high-S ECDSA signature when updating new off-chain states. Though the signatures are valid according to consensus rules, the mempool policy would reject transactions containing high-S values, potentially leading to loss of funds if time-sensitive transactions cannot be relayed and confirmed. We have no evidence of the bug being exploited in the wild.

It affects all classes of lnd nodes: routing, merchant, mobile, etc.

[Lightning-dev] CVE-2020-26896: LND Invoice Preimage Extraction (click to read full disclosure)

Prior to v0.11.0-beta, an lnd node could be coerced into revealing an invoice preimage for a forwarded HTLC with a colliding payment hash. This can be exploited to a) weaken the victim's receiver privacy by confirming the destination of an HTLC, and/or b) under certain circumstances, result in loss of funds to the victim by believing the invoice was paid when it only received routing fees. We have no evidence of either case being exploited in the wild.

It affects routing nodes, i.e. any lnd node that permits HTLC forwarding and operates as any form of merchant node (accepts payment for goods & services); nodes that use rejecthtlc=1 are not affected.

Lightning Network Daemon (lnd) is a complete implementation of a Lightning Network node, and is one of the top used node implementations for LN there is. A cursory glance at nodes using LND and you can see that there are many including bfx-lnd1 (Bitfinex) which has a current capacity of 68.940679780 BTC (6.589%) $883,320.38 and bfx-lnd0 (Bitfinex) which has a current capacity of Capacity 57.119901230 BTC (5.459%) $731,863.59, plus many others like LNbig.com, zaphq.io, and others.

Satoshi never intended the mem-pool to be much bigger then a single block .

I really do wonder why this crippled unusable version of "Bitcoin" with the ticker BTC has so much "value" .

Only reason must be, people simply don´t use it as a currency, like intended .

    Your experience with LocalCoinSwap?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 12:40 AM PDT

I don't want to start to use LocalBitcoins because it requires extensive KYC. Whereas LocalCoinSwap doesn't and for me it's a plus.

I haven't used any of them for a real deal, I only signed up, recenlty, and also have been gathering information.

I receive payments, sometimes, in crypto.

What I need for now is an easy and expensive way to sell crypto and receive fiat in exchange to my bank accounts.

    Do you recommend LocalCoinSwap?

    How is Lightning Network going?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 04:28 PM PDT

Hi all, I've been away from the BTC scene for a while. I didn't like how you needed to pay fees to get on and off LN, and also that you don't hold your private keys on the BTC blockchain. Is LN getting bigger with widespread acceptance? I'm just not seeing any MSM news articles about it. Thanks.
