Validator security. Some thoughts... Posted: 16 Sep 2020 01:07 PM PDT In advance of the launch of the ETH2.0 beacon chain, I think it would be incredibly helpful for some of the sysadmins in the Ethereum community to post some best practices on validator security (hardware and cloud). Given that it is likely that there will be many enthusiasts staking in the first few months and that most will not be security experts, having a few articles on the topic would be great. And cryptographic key security is only one aspect. Best practices on firewall setup, physical security and cloud security would all be valuable I think. [link] [comments]

Can Ethereum be used without smart contracts? Posted: 16 Sep 2020 03:00 PM PDT I know this sounds odd, but can Ethereum be used without contracts? This seems counter-intuitive, but here is my scenario: Groups where participation is permissionless, but all peers are governed with existing contracts, and have verified identity (IE: telecom companies physically peering with each other). In the telecom case, imagine route broadcasts. Each network has the networks they peer with - but they don't control who are peers of the peers. So the updates are permissionless, but not trustless. There are projects like Hyperledger - but AFAIK Hyperledger cannot handle the unknown peers of peers scenario. There is also distributed hash tables, but they are not as secure on their own. I wrote a journal paper on this idea, but I still get a lot of pushback on this type of use. Are there any gotchas that I miss? Can Ethereum be used in this format? If interested, the journal article is here, but only tangentially related to the original question: https://www.mdpi.com/1424-8220/20/18/5281 [link] [comments]

Posted: 16 Sep 2020 02:11 PM PDT ive had a couple stuck transactions before and they either sorted themselves out or some of the standard tricks i found on reddit worked, but this one seems stuck forever i had 0.5 eth left in my account and decided to spend 0.3 on a shitcoin, somehow i ended up with 2 of the same transaction, the first went through but the second got stuck(obviously it cant go through since i now have 0.2 in my account and its a 0.3 txn). etherscan says its dropped but still pending, and i cant change gas or anything since the pending txn is larger than my balance is there anything i can do? Possible to cancel pending transaction by sending one with higher fee but not to self? Posted: 16 Sep 2020 01:44 PM PDT Read that pending transactions can be cancelled by sending self 0 Eth with a higher fee. However, would it also work if I send another transaction same as the pending but with a higher gas fee, especially if I can set the transaction nonce to that of the pending txn, so as to avoid the cost of sending self the 0 Eth transaction? Curious also why wallets allow users to set transaction nonce. Doesnt that expose to potential double spend if the recipients dont wait for confirmation? [link] [comments]

Posted: 16 Sep 2020 06:15 AM PDT I tracked a smart contract and it is making $60k a day just doing arbitrage on tokens trading in different dex. How does it work, is it hard to execute this on a technical stand point of view? [link] [comments]
