Just how private is MW on Litecoin?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 09:15 PM PDT

Hi everyone. I'm a big LTC fan here trying to learn more.

So, I've done a bit of research on MW and it seems like one of the main reasons why it was chosen as a sidechain for LTC was due to its ability to scale.

I understand there are currently "tradeoffs" when it comes to levels of privacy on crypto, for example—Monero has great privacy but does not scale well.

Please correct me if i'm wrong on any points (i'm a non-technical guy trying to understand technical concepts). I'll mostly be asking questions to try to understand it better.

From what I've gathered, it's a known fact that MW is not perfect privacy. I believe its possible to see who the senders and receivers are, but mostly—it helps to hide transaction amounts, correct?

If one wanted the highest level of privacy— what would they have to do? (I heard something about coinjoin)? Can anyone explain that further?

Can the ability to move coins from the sidechain back to the main chain leave behind a footprint that can be traced back? Not sure if this makes sense.. basically, would it not bring up a red flag if a 3rd party could detect that you moved coins from the sidechain to the main chain (say a government wants to know why you were trying to transact in private)?

I think there are a few misconceptions about MW for the typical newbie crypto user- some think it's fully private but it's known that it has its limitations.

What i'm trying to get at here is—can anyone make a "dumbed down guide" for the non-technical folks about what really is possible and what limitations are present with a MW sidechain on LTC.

I'm really excited for this but I think a lot of people still don't fully understand it. Most of the explanations have been very technical and most crypto investors are not.

    Thanks a lot.

How are encryption standards chosen? Dr Mike Pound explains in this video: ‘Magic - “Nothing up my sleeve” numbers”. It’s a great explanation of some of the encryption layers this technology is powered by.
