An update on the SLP token market!

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 07:54 AM PST

    What are SLP tokens?

For those of you who may not know, SLP (SimpleLedger) tokens are simple and cheap tokens built on Bitcoin Cash. They allow anyone, anywhere in the world to create their own token, for less than 1 cent. There are many applications of tokens, such as voting, ticketing, dividends and much, much more. The most exciting part, is that they are permissionless; that is, anyone can make their own money.

    What makes SLP awesome?

Every SLP token transaction is a Bitcoin Cash transaction. This means that the fees paid to send SLP tokens are similar to those paid to send Bitcoin Cash. They can scale with the blocksize, meaning hundreds of token transactions per second with the current available infrastructure (far more than what ERC20 does).

Unlike Ethereum's ERC20 tokens, SLP tokens are not validated at the protocol level. This means that miners are not required to validate the token transactions that they don't care about, reducing overhead and avoiding protocol change. Yet, they still have the double-spend protection properties available on the Bitcoin Cash network, making them lightweight, scalable and secure.

    Progress so far

Without a doubt, The SimpleLedger Protocol has seen excellent uptake and adoption. At the start of 2019, SLP was virtually unheard of. Throughout 2019, transaction count underwent hockey stick growth. Most in the English-speaking BCH community are familiar with SLP tokens. Fewer understand the unique selling point which SLP tokens offer. Different ecosystem participants will tell you different things, but one shared theme is simplicity: that is, SimpleLedger is a simple and effective way to create tokens. Scale is another obvious property: SLP scales with the network blocksize – hardly a scarce resource.

However, the biggest appeal for me, is that SimpleLedger is not implemented at the protocol level. This makes it extremely lightweight, portable to other blockchains supporting arbitrary text messages and conveniently optional for network participants.

Where can I get some tokens?

There are a number of exchanges where you can purchase SLP tokens: Cryptophyl.com, CoinEx.com and exchage.bitcoin.com.

    Cryptophyl

Cryptophyl.com is an exchange for trading SLP tokens, being the first exchange to list the SPICE token and SLP-based stablecoin USDH. We offer fiat options for all major debit and credit cards, as well as EUR and GBP support via SEPA and Faster Payments.

We issued our own exchange token called DROP, which you can earn for trading and allows you to access additional features. We recently announced plans to purchase and burn tokens using exchange revenue.

What are the most popular tokens?

In the 12 months, token transaction counts have skyrocketed, with a twenty-fold increase in daily transaction count. We've put together a list of some of the most popular SLP tokens below:

    • SPICE - This is an appreciation token for tipping users on Telegram, Twitter and Reddit. It's incredibly easy to use and allows users to show their appreciation for a piece of content. Content is aggregated and ranked on spice.network. There are a number of apps built on top of the SPICE infrastructure, such as tipbitcoin.cash (livestream tipping) and spice.casa (gambling).
    • USDH - This is a regulatory compliant stablecoin built on Bitcoin Cash, backed 1:1 by the US dollar. A legitimate alternative to USDT (Tether). You can use it to buy and sell BCH and BTC as well as for payments. CoinSpice recently released a great explainer video.
    • DROP - DROP is Cryptohyl's (SLP token exchange) native token, which you can earn for trading. Further, there is a buy and burn scheme.
    • FLEX - This is CoinFlex's (physcially-delivered Bitcoin futures) exchange token. They provide features and benefits for holders and have a buy and burn scheme.

I hope this has been informative and useful.
