How difficult would it be to accidentally have a hash collision with private key generation?

I was curious about this so I did some quick googling and thought you all may also find it interesting, at least those of you who don't already know:

Using the birthday attack on RIPE-MD160, there is a 50% chance of producing a collision in 890,362,173,273 years.

How does the Bitcoin Cash Node project plan to finance itself?

    Posted: 21 Feb 2020 12:28 AM PST

I'm glad that a step was taken to keep the development ecosystem decentralized. However I am curious how the new project plans to avoid running into the same issues that ABC ran into? I assume devs aren't committing themselves full time to work on the project for free. So what does this project do differently that ensures that this effort produces good code in a way that is sustainable? Unless the entire plan for the forseeable future is to pull code from ABC updates and only modify the code to remove the IFP related stuff. It seems to me like we might be leaving the original problem unsolved and focusing on the symptoms.

Nice way to visualize Bitcoin Cash's improvements over BTC

I was looking at charts today and noticed an interesting relationship.

    https://preview.redd.it/4foc88c3f8i41.png?width=877&format=png&auto=webp&s=54fe357ac299f1cc40806f2dd0d1c34dc29a5ce8

Over the past 2+ years, the daily average size of BCH blocks varies quite a bit, from as small as 5k to as large as 8MB.

    https://preview.redd.it/zfpq7es6f8i41.png?width=877&format=png&auto=webp&s=fc9d8628cd670dbeddb4ba81cd707bd0261392f6

Unsurprisingly, the daily average number of BCH transactions varies quite a lot as well: from 3k to 2.5 million(!). But comparing the BCH plot with the BTC daily average blocksize plot, it hovers right near 1MB. And average number of BTC transactions only varies from 100k to 300k. This is because BTC chain cannot handle more transactions due to the ridiculously limited blocksize and the marginally useful Segwit "scaling solution".

    https://preview.redd.it/i4kfoukgf8i41.png?width=877&format=png&auto=webp&s=d54b3fcec4674110ded260d9d336db498b152d41

Now let's take a look at average fees for BCH versus BTC. The graph we see is the opposite of the blocksize and transaction charts - BTC fees swing wildly from 20x those of BCH to 6000x BCH!

I will leave it as an exercise to the reader which coin has the healthier blockchain. Hint: If you use one of these coins, you will never know how high your fee will be, how long your transaction might take to confirm, and your transaction could even fail completely.

What steps should I take in order to help local stores accept BTC BCH payments?

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 12:00 PM PST

I'm trying to help local stores accept Crypto payments.

What are the steps needed for them to go from 0 to accepting BTC BCH? Wallets, QR codes, addresses, btc --> usd or bank account...

So what things do I need to know?

Big feature request for the bitcoin.com wallet

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 12:08 PM PST

In light of this post where a new BCH user was confused, here's a big feature request for the bitcoin.com wallet.

I know that we're all trying to switch the world to a pure cryptocurrency economy, but sadly, we still live in the fiat world for right now, so we still have to talk in terms of fiat currency.

Currently, the bitcoin.com wallet only shows us the CURRENT USD VALUE of each transaction, not the ORIGINAL USD VALUE at the time of the transaction.

It would be a really nice feature to be able to see BOTH USD VALUES PER TRANSACTION: the original USD value & the current USD value.

Interestingly enough, the wallet app provided by BTC.com actually DOES show BOTH values, but that wallet is really a terrible wallet with almost no features at all. It has a terrible user interface as well, and their customer support is almost 100% non-existent. So that wallet totally pales in comparison to the excellent bitcoin.com wallet.

So the reason that this would be a good feature is precisely because of the confusion that the user had in the post above.

Example: Let's say that we pay someone $20 USD for lunch. A few days later, we go back to our Bitcoin.com wallet, and it appears like we only paid that person $17.50 USD for lunch. That's because the USD value of BCH has dropped over the last few days, but then it becomes very confusing to us as to what was the actual USD dollar that we paid them a few days ago?

So, if the bitcoin.com wallet actually showed us BOTH USD VALUES (current value & original value), then this would eliminate all of this confusion.

I know that this would be a huge feature request, because it would require to historically have access to old daily prices of BCH!

    Thanks! :)

TL;DR: As an under 18, how can I start investing in BTC?

    Everyone please STOP chaintipping me.

    Posted: 20 Feb 2020 03:34 AM PST

I need to figure out where my chaintip is currently redirecting to, and I don't have time right now to do it.

So please, you can PLEDGE to support us (or me) , but stop the actual chaintipping of my account.

Also, tippr is likewise out until further notice. Keep your money to yourself for now, or donate to other devs on our project who need it. Don't trust, verify.

    Thanks a bunch.

    freetrader

p.s. I already figured out it's not going to my Memo wallet. ;-)

    UPDATE:

All good, I found the wallet I used for collecting chaintips on Reddit. I have sent the funds tipped since the announcement, to a new wallet where I am collecting them until the best way to use these funds for the project is decided.

The address they have been sent to is :

    qzcra84a2pa9lft8j0txvvgrxr8qwnfj2qa3fsc5a3

You can see it is a little over 16 BCH from chaintips so far. Thank you very much, we will find a good way to use them to pay for services or infrastructure we need for the Bitcoin Cash Node project - we just have to finalize internally how to handle those funds.

Until then, they shall remain at rest at the above address.

I will periodically clear any large tips received for work on the project on my https://read.cash/@freetrader wallet , to the same above address. Like the currently around 9.9 BCH kindly donated to the project after yesterday's "coming out".

I have also set my chaintip address to that address so any future tips to me will automatically be directed to that 'holding pen' wallet dedicated to Bitcoin Cash Node project use.

Once we have more information about how our project will receive larger donations securely, I will update you.
