P2pool users: Update required for emergency hard fork

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 04:39 PM PST

We recently discovered a bug in p2pool that requires an emergency hard fork. There was a bug in the address handling code that failed to zero-pad pubkeyhashes in output scripts. If the first byte of the script should have been 0x00, that byte was simply omitted. This resulted in 1/256th of all addresses resulting in unspendable scripts, and coins being effectively burned. This bug only affected the addresses and outputs in question; the blocks containing these unspendable outputs were still valid, and all other users continued to get paid normally. As a result of this bug, two Bitcoin Cash blocks contained unspendable payments of approximately 0.9 BCH each. I am unaware of any fund losses occurring on any other chains.

Since this bug affects the contents of the coinbase transaction, and since all nodes in p2pool need to be able to agree exactly on the contents of the coinbase transaction at any point in the share chain, fixing this bug is a hard fork of the p2pool share chain. Fixing this bug does not require any forks on BCH or BTC; only p2pool is affected.

I have published an updated version of p2pool (v35) in the master branch on my github. If you're already using the master branch of my code, a simple git pull and restart of the node should suffice. Otherwise, there are instructions on the page linked above for how to create a fresh installation.

This bug should affect all coins on p2pool, including BTC and LTC. Users of p2pool on any cryptocurrency should update immediately.

On BCH, the fork is expected to get locked in tonight or early tomorrow morning, and the fork is expected to take place on Tuesday or Wednesday.

This does not affect anyone who is not mining on P2pool.

For a flippening to occur: Remember that anyone can get fooled into investing in a technology they don't understand (BTC). They need to USE IT to understand it. Our goal should be merchant adoption so people can compare BCH to BTC for themselves. Once they see the difference, it's game over for BTC.

[Security] Bluetooth vulnerability for Android devices

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 03:16 PM PST

Publicly released a few days ago CVE-2020-022

If you have Android 10 or the Feb 2020 security update should be fine, otherwise if you use an android hotwallet may want to be more cautious until more info comes out. Generally it's under Settings > System > About > Android Version

On November 3rd, 2019, we have reported a critical vulnerability affecting the Android Bluetooth subsystem. This vulnerability has been assigned CVE-2020-0022 and was now patched in the latest security patch from February 2020. The security impact is as follows:

On Android 8.0 to 9.0, a remote attacker within proximity can silently execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the Bluetooth daemon as long as Bluetooth is enabled. No user interaction is required and only the Bluetooth MAC address of the target devices has to be known. For some devices, the Bluetooth MAC address can be deduced from the WiFi MAC address. This vulnerability can lead to theft of personal data and could potentially be used to spread malware (Short-Distance Worm). On Android 10, this vulnerability is not exploitable for technical reasons and only results in a crash of the Bluetooth daemon. Android versions even older than 8.0 might also be affected but we have not evaluated the impact.

Users are strongly advised to install the latest available security patch from February 2020. If you have no patch available yet or your device is not supported anymore, you can try to mitigate the impact by some generic behavior rules:

Only enable Bluetooth if strictly necessary. Keep in mind that most Bluetooth enabled headphones also support wired analog audio. Keep your device non-discoverable. Most are only discoverable if you enter the Bluetooth scanning menu. Nevertheless, some older phones might be discoverable permanently.

Transaction based lottery to fund developers .

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 01:20 AM PST

    Every transaction has a fee.

Say one wallet implemented an optional second fee that does not go to the miners but a holding address

The user can choose how much he pays. The more he pays the higher his chance of winning.

The pot is split between one lucky user who receives winnings back to his wallet address and a developer fund. The payout could be every 1000 blocks for example.

I think this would be very popular and drive adoption of that wallet forcing other wallets to follow suit. It would be nice seeing winners in Venezuela and be great publicity.

The developer fund can only be spent on projects supported by the lottery users. This could be setup within the wallet where there is a default list of funding projects or one of the users choosing.

Non coercive, decentralised and no corruptible funding body to get in the way.

    tipprbot questions.

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 10:52 PM PST

    Hi all,

I'm asking this here because I can't ask question in the tipprbot reddit without connecting it to a twitter account.

When write "Balance" I'm told I have a BCH and BSV balance. When I write "withdraw", it tells me how to withdraw BCH but not BSV.

I don't wan't to withdraw either if I can use them both to tip but if not, I'd like to figure out how to withdraw the BSV.

Is there a simple way to trade if for BCH without sending it out of the wallet?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

No idea why BTC maximalists are starting to shill TRX...Probably the most ridiculous thing I've seen in this space in the past 3 years. Thinking projects are starting to get spooked by ETH 2.0 and how much capital is really being poured into Defi protocols right now.

First battle was convincing people about BTC, I've learned so much. Now it's time to live BCH

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 11:47 AM PST

I remember the early days using dozens of analogy to convince people about BTC.

How it was using 14k4 modem, how it took hours to load a picture over the internet. How impossible it was to convince multinationals about the importance of the internet. How impossible it was to hook retailers up with webshops. How Flash 3.0 was so promising. Now only a few players dominate whole media landscape, retail and travel business.

This is the new paradigm about money. About the monopoly fiat money, printing out of thin air. Unfair for billions of people. I demonstrated bitcoin, gave it away during the presentations. My public and students experienced the magic money, they were really taken by aaawwww.

Until this episode; The blocks went full, I could no longer give away bitcoin during my presentation. The power of my lecture got wrecked, because only the experience is convincing. Otherwise it's just chit chat about fantasy transactions of peer to peer electronic cash. Meanwhile the troll army for core exploded all over, spamming the conversations. My account got banned on r/bitcoin. Content creators start calling other legit CC projects scams. After the hard fork all of them calls BCH bCash. This episode is just like how the mainstream media bashed BTC in the early years; a scam, a pyramid scheme, etc.

My lessons made me immune for them. Ofcourse I hold both BTC and BCH, because I was in far before the fork. But now I buy up BCH on a weekly base, no matter the price. Hopefully BTC goes to the moon, but I'm confident BCH is the right way to move forward on chain. If LN works well, or any other second layer, then it benefits all of the Eco System. But we can't wait for 1 commercial company to scale Bitcoin.

This post is just a manner to organize my thought.
