Should we be discussing the implications of DeFi effectively preventing future forks?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 05:05 PM PST

I've seen it mentioned a few places recently but not seen a lot of discussion.

The premise is that the DeFi ecosystem makes a contentious fork of Ethereum much harder.

The major DeFi stable coins (MakerDAO, USDC etc.) would need to reach a consensus on a fork to follow and if they didn't (and in a contentious fork there is no guarantee) many of the DeFi protocols could fail.

This is the downside of the Lego bricks model for finance - another analogy could be a house of cards :-). Another way to look at it is that MakerDAO probably ends up acting as the king maker as it's the most systematically important protocol in DeFi.

I say this as a huge fan of DeFi - it's the most exciting area in crypto by far at the moment IMO.

The two lost likely scenarios for a contentious fork would be:

    • ETH 1 / 1.x / 2 each of these major upgrades negatively impacts a material number of network participants and could result in a fork (e.g. transition to PoS disenfranchising miners).

    • DAO like event - e.g. major lending protocol exploit (say Compound allowing withdrawal of collateral without paying down debt) which would impact many ETH token holders.

    Coinomi or Atomic Wallet?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 10:24 AM PST

I wish to install an Android wallet compatible with Unstoppable Domains, and it appears the two most popular options are Atomic and Coinomi. I only care about BTC, ETH and ERC20 support. Are there any significant differences or reasons to choose one over the other?

How does Ethereum plan to adapt to fix the situation where those who store state only pay one time and "freeride" on node's storage costs indefinitely?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 10:16 AM PST

I think Nervos is addressing this by taxing via inflation only those who store state. Thoughts?

    DeFi affordable housing

    Posted: 28 Jan 2020 09:28 AM PST

Hey all, I'm actually very interested in the idea of using DeFi as a tool to achieve affordable housing in terms of removing the role of developers.

I've thought about it, by able to crowdfund a housing project via smart contract, it will eventually keep both side of the client and consultant safe in terms of financial and producr deliverables.

Yet what bugging me most is how does it work in terms of funding as currently houses are bought relying on bank loans.

    Any discussion is welcomed here
