Is it just me or does it seem like crypto kind of missed the boat?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 03:36 PM PST

I've been trying to figure out what the potential ups/downs are for holding onto my crypto as an investment and lately I've had a harder time justifying holding on. It seems like there was a period where we could've ridden the wave, but I'm not seeing that much upside. I bring up these potential points in hopes that someone can dissuade me of these concerns, but I'm pretty pessimistic at this point

    1. User Interface: If money is all about trust then it's REALLY hard to get people to trust what they don't understand. Even at the height of crypto mania most people had no idea how a blockchain actually works. Add that to all the stories of people having their accounts drained, sending money to the wrong address, and the completely lack of insurance like FDIC and it strikes me that it would be pretty hard to get non-speculators to put significant amounts of money into crypto for safekeeping.
    2. "The unbanked/third world": I've actually been living in the third world on and off for the last six months, and I've got to say... it was HARD getting any level of interest in crypto from anyone. Even in countries with decent technical knowledge and a horrible local currency (Argentina), people were much more interested in using US dollars or online banking than in figuring out crypto exchanges
    3. NO ONE IS @#$@ING SPENDING IT. Like... SERIOUSLY. I have friends who WORK in the crypto world, and when I go out to dinner with them, or sell my speakers or ANYTHING, none of them are willing to pay me in bitcoin. It seems ridiculous to have a currency that everyone is holding on to because they're waiting for it to be worth more. There was even a report that over 90% of mined bitcoin hasn't moved at all in the last 6 months. That is terrible for a currency.

I bring these up to start a conversation and would honestly love to hear other opinions about this.

Two years ago, less than $10 million in ether was used in decentralized finance (defi) en Ethereum. Today, it's more than $650 million. That's more than 2% of all eth, and despite the bear market.

Sim swapped and Coinbase account drained

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 12:46 PM PST

Thought I would share my sim swapping story and how I lost everything, hopefully it's helpful, entertaining or of some value to people.

Mid day yesterday I noticed I had no cellular data on my phone, I was connected to the internet and a T-Mobile customer so I am no stranger to service outages and spotty coverage, since I still had WiFi I moved on thinking nothing of it.

Around 2pm I start receiving emails about account passwords being changed, new devices, suspicious logins ect ect I didn't quite understand what I was seeing, then quickly put it together. No service, account accesses changing.... I've been SIM SWAPPED. Someone had cloned my phone and was receiving all the 2stage verification texts from COINBASE, my email accounts and other accounts. I quickly contact my bank freeze transaction, and called T-Mobile. Apparently it is incredibly easy to sim swap, they corrected the issue and I regained control of my phone. I was left a little foggy on how they let this happen in the first place, but that's another story.

Long story slightly shorter, I spend the night creating new passwords across the board, by the time I got to my Coinbase account it was wiped out.....completely, I know I should probably have not relied on them for any real security, but hindsight is 20/20.

Coinbase response has basically been "that sucks" which is disappointing to say the least.

Whatch out folks! Keep your crypto safe, pull out of crypto "banks" invest in a TREZOR wallet or something you control, make sure you have all safe guards in place so you don't end up shit out of luck like me!

To those who think "Crypto missed the boat":

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 09:29 PM PST

I keep seeing these threads pop up and I sometimes scratch my head. I wonder, are you using crypto? Because it doesn't sound like it.

Since installing a good mobile app (I use Edge Wallet, it's a great multi-wallet), I've made so many cryptocurrency purchases. First, I buy all my shirts and my VPN subscription in crypto. But that's just me. Here's what I've got in the past month for crypto -

    • New Phone (bought IRL from a friend for Ethereum)
    • A hamburger (???)
    • Drug testing kits - Online store accepted Monero
    • Advertisement banner for my Runescape Private server - The community there uses crypto a lot, it's also the community that got me into BTC a few years ago

Last month I also bought the webdomain for a Hong Kong site with BCH and an ear cleaning tool on OpenBazaar (HavenApp) (No idea why this was there but I was legit looking for one when I found it)

Here's are my pro tips for using crypto:

    • If you're invested in a shitcoin that you don't actually use, or see yourself using, dump it, because no one else is using it either
    • Have a good wallet that is easy to keep in sync. There's some Monero wallets out there that are great for privacy, but the UX is total **** whenever you want to make a transaction
    • Have a cold wallet and a hot wallet. I keep the bulk of my crypto on my Trezor, and about 200-300$ on your phone. The worst feeling in the world is when a place accepts crypto but you're not ready.

And just to finish it off, I have to deal with the legacy banking systems every so often. We have NOT missed that boat. Holy crap is it difficult to do transactions and get people onboard. The difference in those payments is astounding.

Edit: I'm going to bed now, I'll answer all your replies in 9 hours. GL hf and download a wallet

I don't know where else to ask so: Health related crypto fundraiser. Not a beg thread, asking for advice.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 03:16 AM PST

This is not a beg post, well it is, but I am not asking for donations from you, asking for advice.

Hello, well basically I am out of options so I would like to ask, if there is any chance of personal health related fundraiser available anywhere? I am searching for that long time and still I am out of luck.

I experienced liver failure, needed a new liver, which basically already means, that someone donated me his/her liver. Someone has to die in order for me to live. That's a tough situation to be in, so I don't want to ever to do that. Sadly my finances is running thin and I don't see any other option... It's shameful, but complications basically put me out of working for a long months and I was fired from the job, etc.

FIAT fundraising is apparently not an option, since they are available in big countries, but not in mine (Czech Republic). So yeah I am out of luck with that. I have friends in those countries, but you know, taxes and that sort of thing and well...money changes people, so I don't see that as an option.

Can you point me to a some direction where some fundraiser would be possible?

And no I am not asking for 10s of thousand of dolars, surgery and that sort of stuff is fully paid by me. But I need to take pills in order for me to live, without those pills, my body would simply destroy new liver, because it's not mine. And those pills Advangraf (Tacrolimus), CellCept (Mycophenolic acid) + 8 other medicaments is not really cheap. This is only temporary, till I will be able to work. I also suffer from Psoriasis, which is something which probably cost me a liver, but that's another story...

    Thank you in advance.
