Can there be said anything positive about govs introducing their own cryptos?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 11:12 PM PST

I've read about the European Central Bank openly discussing the introduction on a digital version of the Euro.

It makes me shiver. If we are forced to switch to a digital Euro, we would basically be forced to do KYC and anonymity of how we spend our money would be gone.

I need some counter weight to get a better overview of what this means.

Can anyone give me a positive angle on this? Because the only one that comes to my mind is that company issued stable coins would become obsolete. Or wouldn't they?

    Crypto as Christmas presents PSA

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:22 AM PST

It's that time of year again, where we'll no doubt see lots of posts about giving someone crypto for christmass. This is to remind you, that giving a gift is about giving someone something THEY want, not something YOU want.

Your internet money that someone has to jump through hoops to even use and that is confusing as fuck to them is NOT a great gift idea. This is even more true if its whatever shitcoin you are trying to spread adoption for, Don't burden your loved ones with your heavy ass bags.

If you wanna argue that it's easy to convert it to a gift card through <whatever service> or spend on site XYZ through <whatever service>, then guess what? Just buy them a fucking gift card.

Get people you love and care about something they actually want or a gift that shows thoughtfulness, it is incredibly rare that crypto is going to be either of these things, so much like the personalized license plate that you think is really clever that you are thinking about getting, the answer is DON'T.

Now if it's someone you hate, then crypto might actually be a good idea, because it will be frustrating for them to figure out, it will probably decrease in value, and if it doesn't you can revel in the fact that they hate themselves for throwing away or losing your stupid internet money paper wallet that they internally rolled their eyes at when they opened.

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:55 PM PST

    Hi -

Sorry if this is a repeat question. I am wondering what is the best way to buy cryptocurrency in Canada. My initial research says Coinsquare. Does anyone have any other suggestions or any negative experience with Coinsquare?
I appreciate your help and thank you for your time.

Anyone else has been fraudulently charged by Messari Crypto without authorization?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 08:54 AM PST

Last year I signed up for the Messari crypto newsletter and opted for their early bird/special promo for $100/one year subscription.

I wasn't planning on renewing this year and even forgot about it, as most of their emails go straight into my junk folder.

I was just reviewing my credit card transactions in the past few days and noticed a $400 charge by MESSARI, INC 6468512504 NY. I did not authorize this transaction and did not receive any notification of it from them. Absolutely fraudulent behaviour.

    Anyone else experience this?

The Economics of "ASICs" for RandomX

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 10:06 AM PST

    Cross posted from r/Monero

Regarding RandomX and ASICs, people seem to mis-understand the interaction between hardware/software, the costs of development/manufacture of world class semiconductors, and the economics of ASIC mining.

These on-chip, bare metal processing units that RandomX requires are highly advanced, and required to make chips "smart." An "ASIC" takes simple dumb functions and iterates them on bare silicon, rather than as a software abstraction (a layer higher) on top of the underlying hardware.

There are a few things that RandomX didn't include, meaning that a fully optimized "ASIC" processor could eliminate some unused logic units to make room for the others particular to RandomX. At most, the designers of RandomX estimate a 2x improvement over current CPUs.

2x. That's almost nothing when you consider the economics of what it takes to make one of these things. As someone who spent 5 years as a process engineer in a world class semicon fab, I can tell you the design, testing, manufacture and turnaround time for advanced CPUs is enormous. Nothing like dumb SHA256 ASICs or simple memory chips. You better be gettting a huge return on investment to go to all that trouble.

2x is nothing. Bitcoin ASICs arose because there was something on the order of 1000x speed advantage over GPUs. That's the kind of economics you need to recoup the costs involved. Not to mention that you are still competing against the ever progressing AMD and Intel advancements (and probably ARM and RISC-V soon enough). Bitmain has very little competition. They have the patents and the process for new ASICs.

So no, it's unlikely, for years, that anyone will develop an economically viable "ASIC" (lol) for RandomX.

What we might see are CPU manufacturers use RandomX as a benchmark for their new units, since you will have the promise of a sort of "rebate" by mining Monero. In fact that could be an awesome marketing opportunity for Monero.

XMR Transactions Pending on Liberal Coins for over a week - Support Ignoring

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 07:51 AM PST

I've made somewhere between 4-6 different transactions from 2 different Liberal Coins wallets, dating back to Dec 1.

1 of those transactions I was lucky enough to have refunded. But all others are just marked pending. I've sent to a variety of different addresses/services (including the 2 opposing wallets), and nowhere is receiving the deposits/withdrawals. The problem can't be with the target addresses, it has to be LiberalCoins.

In transaction history, none of these transactions are marked as complete, all marked as pending. However there is no TXID either.

Again liberal coins support is not responding.

At this point I would just like to get the XMR I have left on these wallets off. But I don't know how to.

Massena, NY. Its in a very rural part of NYS. Alcoa and GM just walked away. Crashed the economy. Some of the lowest KW/HR rates (ALL HYDRO $0.03936) in the USA. STUNNED that more mining & server farms are not setting up shop there.

A border town, where if you mention Bitcoin, no one really knows what you are talking. No idea at all. All work is minimum wage, if you can find a job. Winters are brutal. Looks like a nuclear bomb hit. 2 hours drive to find a Starbucks. Fresh Sushi? What's that?

May be worth looking into? Word is the Chinese have set up shop. Just an FYI:

    Massena:

The per capita income for the town was $15,111. About 16.9% of families and 28.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.4% of those under age 18 and 10.8% of those age 65 or over.
