    Synchronous vs Asynchronous cross-shard communication

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 05:22 PM PDT

I just attended Devcon and spent a lot of time listening to concern about composability across shards.

From a developer standpoint, I don't see asynchronicity as problematic. It's simply something we will need to live with to move to a sharding system. Nearly all DeFi will naturally get deployed wherever the Maker contracts live (which may just remain on the current ETH1 chain as it becomes a shard), and composability will remain the same as it is today...on that shard. The cost of using this urban "ETH1 / DeFi City" will likely be much higher than the new suburban shards, but that's okay! A FairWin style ponzi scheme will naturally choose a low cost shard to blow up on without affecting the major shards (speaking of which, we should also build in a throttle to prevent a single contract from using more than 20% of a block's gas)

I believe we should accept that cross shard communication is not perfectly composable. It's so much more important to move to PoS quickly and get some significant scalability for silo-style dapps (e.g. a gambling app, or ticketing app) which do not need to communicate often across shards. There's simply no need to evenly distribute the load and fee pricing across shards.

Taken to a more simple "extreme", perhaps the only cross-shard activity should be the transfer of ETH and other assets, initiated by users who will decide which shard they wish to do business in. A contract on one shard does not need to directly call a contract on another shard.

Let's move full-steam ahead with PoS and shards as silos. Each shard can likely have 10x the throughput that ETH1 currently has, if we optimize using a low shard count and punt on complex cross-shard communication. The whole system will naturally scale 100x by virtue of people using the cheaper shards. We don't need 1024x any time soon! Technical purity should take a backseat to the market needs.

My Binance account got hacked!! Who is this perpetrator - ETH address 0x4FED1fC4144c223aE3C1553be203cDFcbD38C581

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 03:01 AM PDT

My binance account was hacked a day before. All my funds were converted into ETC and withdrawn from binance. I received no confirmation mail for withdrawals too. All security steps - login password, 2FA, confirmation mail were compromised. The ETC address to which he withdrew happened to be my Bittrex account address. In Bittrex exchange, The perpetrator has converted all ETC into ETH and withdrawn from there as well to ETH address 0x624577Cc87b52296de9F0E33AaFd6B24e1767B83. From there he has moved it again to a Cryptonator wallet 0x4FED1fC4144c223aE3C1553be203cDFcbD38C581.

This final address has around 738 ETH. Sure a hacker whale. Even few seconds before transactions have happened on this address. But couldn't do anything 😳 Anonymity can be a curse as well!

I believe my phone has been compromised.. But I don't have a clue even now how. I use iphone and access binance only through safari. And it's been more than a year since I logged into my Bittrex account. So not sure how the hacker got access to my Bittrex account as well.

I found a year old reddit thread, exodus wallet hack, where exodus wallet was hacked and ETH was moved to same ETH address. So this hacker has been doing it for a long long time. Can anyone do anything on this. There are around 800k transactions on this address.

Knew the crypto saying "you don't own your coin when you don't own the keys". Hard lesson indeed. Any ethical hackers around please get the owner of this address!!

How do I find dates for upcoming Ethereum conferences?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 01:14 PM PDT

I moved to NYC this year and totally missed ethereal NY and consensys conferences. I would also love to go to devcon at least once. I'd love to know when any of these things are upcoming in NYC so I don't miss them. Anyone know where I can find this info?

Gitcoin created quests that you can play to gain Kudos. All in all a fun distraction with some educational value.

What are the safest ERC20 stablecoins?

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 10:38 AM PDT

I'm planning on temporarily putting a small percentage of my crypto holdings to USD. Besides DAI, what are other stablecoins that should be "safe" to use? I don't feel comfortable with USDT.

    Ethereum (Non-Dev) Node Questions

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 08:24 AM PDT

I am a non-dev currently on a mission to run a full Ethereum node. I've purchased an Avado i 3 and have had Parity running for 2 weeks now. I am having a hard time finding the answer to some of my questions, so Ill just put them here. Please help if you can.

1 - I am trying to understand how I manage and secure my node. What should I be doing as a node operator to insure that my node is running properly? Where do I find node statistics (up/down time, connections, etc). What sort of node data is important? As I mentioned above, I am running an Avado i 3 and interacting with it via the Avado web interface.

2 - Node trackers? If I want to view my node among all other nodes, where is the best place to view this? I tried something like etherscan node tracker, but I cant find out how to find my node. Ive also tried ethernodes.org but the info provided on my node is pretty slim. Where is the best place to track your node on a global list?

    I'll just start there :)

Please let me know if there is a better place for me to be asking these questions. Thanks!

I have been away from this sub for awhile. I tried reading the top posts from last month. When is proof of stake coming? Any developments about sharding? Any new developments or noteworthy things in the last year?
