The main problem with the IRS guidelines on coin forks... Posted: 10 Oct 2019 03:08 AM PDT If its a contentions fork, the value is split, and the value of what I hold has not increased. I've simply had a gold bar, and now I have multiple pieces of a gold bar. If its not a contentions fork, but some guy creates a new coin, hes basically used the same addresses to increase the value of that gold by making something new out of it for everyone holding those private keys. He's turned some of that gold into gold rings. What's more he's done it for free and I've never agreed to pay him for his services. He just did it without my permission or my knowledge or expectation of him creating those trinkets for me. So that labor was not a consensual expectation of value transferred to me. I never asked for it nor expected it, and now the IRS wants us to believe it is a taxable event. We did not ask for, pay for, or have any implied contract to have our public and private address filled with more coins. The IRS needs to leave us alone until we actually sell these extra coins.
