- The *actual* problem with yesterday's BCH hiccup is not the backlog itself. It's that miners were incompetent back in 2015 by running "default software" (core) and they are running "default software" again. There is no thinking process or decision-making involved. Did we learn anything since 2015?

MAJOR unknown miner mining to qq4q* is poolin.com's BTC pool Posted: 03 Sep 2019 12:06 AM PDT TL;DR:
For weeks I've noticed an unknown miner mining 5..7 blocks in sequence once BCH turned profitable (for instance, blocks 598583-598588 right now). Their coinbase string is just '//mm...' ('mm'=merged-mining signature). What surprised me is their hashpower, considerably larger than btc.top's which is known to move all their 6EH/s to BCH every now and then. I've seen this unknown miner repeatedly mining 6 300G-diff blocks in a 10 minute window, which amounts to ~18% of the total SHA256 hashrate. Because of them, BCH has lately had many long periods with no blocks, many more than variance alone would explain, followed by a burst of 10-20 blocks in just a few minutes. Yesterday I noticed they mined a ton of 1MB blocks when the mempool was full, which really frustrated me: it's not like they were using the default config, they actually chose a smaller one!! How could we contact an unknown miner to ask them to raise their config? So today I did some digging... There are just a couple of pools that could be doing this, since 18% of the SHA256 hashrate is a lot. First I noticed their coinbase had nLockTime!=0, which is kind of unique. On BTC only f2pool and poolin showed this behavior. Also, whoever 'unknown' is, it's certain they have 3 nodes running on their servers: btc, bch and the merged-mined coin node. What's interesting about merged-mining is that you have to broadcast the auxpow structure when you mine a block, which contains a coinbase template of the original coin. So I fired up a namecoin node and looked for auxpow structures whose coinbase mined to qq4q*. I found many blocks and they mined namecoins to 2 addresses. Then I looked for all namecoins mined to these addresses and printed out the auxpow coinbase scriptsig: for both addresses they showed either '//mm' or '/poolin.com/', depending on the nBits (bch or btc blocks), and nothing else. Later, I found Checksum0's tweet from yesterday with even more evidence pointing to them: https://twitter.com/checksum0/status/1168479702714994689 I don't know exactly why they avoid signing their coinbases, but I suspect it's because their btc pool is supposed to be btc only. Can someone with a twitter account reach out to them? C'mon... 1MB blocks... really?? [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Sep 2019 09:57 AM PDT Hey everyone! Late last night I released v1.7.5 of Crescent Cash for both Android and Desktop. This update primarily focuses on transaction broadcasting. It now no longer broadcasts transactions via bitcoincashj, but instead uses /u/imaginary_username's REST API (https://rest.imaginary.cash). This will make transactions broadcasting faster and more reliable. On top of this, there have been quite a few UI fixes and internal fixes for both Android and Desktop. Coming in future release:

Current best service to convert fiat to BCH Posted: 02 Sep 2019 03:18 PM PDT Hi folks. I'm trying to buy some more BCH and am looking for the best exchange rate and fees with limited sharing of personal details. Things have changed a lot since I last did this - I have previously used Coinbase but they now now require a photo ID and every other personal detail to withdraw coins. Too invasive for me. I'm okay with exchanges that require a name, phone number, and bank account or CCN. I took a look at buy.bitcoin.com, but their exchange rate is notably worse to begin with, and they have 7.5% in fees (unclear if this is built into the exchange rate). What's the go-to option these days? EDIT: I took a deeper look into buy.bitcoin.com and besides high fees, their payment processor also requires excessive information gathering - they just don't tell you that up front. Looks like local.bitcoin.com is my only option. [link] [comments]
