Storm: A potential alternative approach to instant confirmations

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 05:30 AM PDT

    Hi folks,

I have been a bit busy with something lately. I have implemented an idea on how to approach instant confirmations by further exploring the Subchains / Weak blocks idea. For more information, please have a look here:

    The proposal: https://github.com/awemany/storm-sim/raw/master/whitepaper/storm-wp-2019-08-30.pdf

    The accompanying simulation: https://github.com/awemany/storm-sim

The preliminary, work-in-progress pull request: https://github.com/BitcoinUnlimited/BitcoinUnlimited/pull/1883

I hope you guys find this interesting. Feedback welcome!

EDIT: Updated WP to correct my Merklix error.

Warning! Fraud risk on local.bitcoin.com for Europeans to be aware of!

    Posted: 29 Aug 2019 09:37 AM PDT

I've been a very active user of local.bitcoin.com and it's been really good. There are quite a few scammers though so be careful. The good news is that the arbitrators are great and have correctly responded to all the difficult cases I've been involved in so far. Unfortunately a particular scam has been pulled on me that even the arbitrators are powerless to prevent. It's a fraudulent wire transfer. It works like this: the thief initiates a SEPA transfer from an account he doesn't own. He simply fills out a paper slip, puts someone else's account number on it (publicly available) and fakes a signature. The bank teller is supposed to verify the signature, but this isn't exactly cryptographically secure so a certain number of attempts will succeed (in Germany alone 35€ million/year). The problem is that the local user sees the money being credited to their account and releases the bitcoin cash. The bank then find out about the fraud when the victim notices the deduction from his account. This happened to me and my long standing bank account was closed without warning and the balance put in a trust pending a police investigation. Total nightmare.

Tl;Dr bank transfers are nowhere near as safe as Bitcoin cash transfers. Very easy to fake.

Edit: even though the bank failed at the most basic security checks, I may still be forced to return the money, which means I might be out by 70000 euros in a worst case scenario (assuming all the money I received was stolen).
