If FATF wants transparency, DEXs are the way forward.

    Posted: 23 Jun 2019 03:25 AM PDT

If FATF wants transparency, DEXs are the way forward.

I read a few puzzling comments in various communities about FATF being a threat to DEXs. From my understanding, but here is why I think it won't be

    1) The point of FATF is about Reduced Transparency

FATF's main concern regarding VA and VASP is about reduced transparency. See 4.

    https://i.redd.it/6zdw4eye13631.png

But the FATF is wrong about DEXs because it does not reduce transparency. In fact..

    2) DEXs are WAY MORE transparent than CEXs

This is because money transfer on a centralized exchange can't be tracked on the blockchain but is easily tracked on a DEX.

First, let us see why a CEX acts like a black box "mixer", and why KYC is appropriate for them:

    --

    Address A deposit 100 ETH -> Binance

Address B (suspicious) deposit 100 ETH -> Binance

    Afterwards,

Binance -> 100 ETH withdrawn to Address C

    --

So who does the 100 ETH in Address C belongs to?

This is equivalent to putting your notes and coins into an already huge pile of notes and coins, mixing them up, and then asking your friend to take it out. Will you know if the money your friend took out originally belongs to you?

No, you will not. And that's how a centralized exchange works. This is because when you are trading on a CEX, you are depositing into the centralized exchange wallet, which is the huge pile of money. When you trade, these money transfers are then settled on CEX internal servers and can't be tracked on the blockchain. A hacker can simply deposit stolen ETH into a CEX, transfer the funds many other ERC20 tokens and withdraw them.

Also, keep in mind that a customer's KYC data is not always accurate. A malicious person with intent will not attack with his own identify so KYC and consumer's data is not an answer to everything. Also, there are countless of traders trading with other people's KYC.

Yes, that's right. It is not that hard to buy an identity these days.

On the other hand, trades on most DEXs are settled on-chain. So it is not advantageous to use a DEX for any illegal activities since these trades can be viewed on the blockchain which makes tracking and analysis possible. Since DEX can only withdraw to the user's wallet, no "obfuscation" is possible, and in fact "money transfer" isn't even supported.

    3) FATF is a recommendation, not a law

Ultimately, FATF is still up each country's jurisdiction to decide how they want to regulate crypto. See 20.

    https://i.redd.it/h1xfxo9h13631.png

Overall, until there is a law being passed that says DEXs are a no-go. There is nothing to worry about.

Please allow me to rant just a bit.

    Posted: 23 Jun 2019 01:22 AM PDT

OTC coins could be from illegal activities -> exchanges who need to obey the law will lock those accounts holding any, plain logic.

Privacy coins solve the above problem -> exchanges who need to obey law will have to cease trading with privacy coins because there is no way of knowing those are coming from the latest ransomware.

This will result in two worlds:

An unregulated one where privacy matters, but the people who use it know it's at a serious cost. Mainly the idea of dealing with both clean and criminal blood money that has been stigmatized by the government as such. Frowned upon by ignorant people who claim "they have nothing to hide".

And a regulated one where freedom of speech is "very important" until you ride against the tide and they go Orwellian on you.

A lot of people who are into crypto right now will have tremendous gains in the future to come, and a lot of them won't give a rats ass as long as they can buy the next cool gadget.

I know a lot of us are against the idea of total control and care very much about privacy. But still the devils is feeding us with what we like the most, we are all greedy fucks buying our ticket to hell!!

Cheapest way of cashing out in Canada

    Posted: 23 Jun 2019 01:27 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,
I'll keep this one simple, I was gifted a certain amount of BTC recently and I've kept it idle so far without really doing much about it. Due to some upcoming expenses I'll have to dip into this fund and I've no idea how I could cash this BTC out into Fiat.. I've been recommended Coinbase multiple times but their support desk is confusing as to whether or not they do fiat withdrawals into banks in Canada.

It'll be helpful if someone could confirm this, or suggest another service that could help me regarding this. I'm not new to crypto, been in this space for half a year now but never really attempted to withdraw directly to fiat, usually ended up spending it in BTC or LTC itself until now.
    Thanks
