the curse of stacking sats and delaying gratification

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 10:08 PM PDT

I have been DCA'ing and HODLing for a couple years now (yes all the way up and all the way down during '17 and '18 no regrets) and I noticed I have changed...I have a really awesome normie job that pays well...but I still can't bring myself to get a better car (current car is 20 years old but still runs fine), better phone, or build a new gaming pc for the 4k era like I have wanted to for over a year now. Every time I look up cars or pc parts all I can think is...do I really need this? I could just stack sats. So that's what I do. I stack fucking sats and live like a hobo(not really) on a near 6fig salary. Instead of buying a new game, I try to learn python. Instead of going out drinking, I play with my LND node and try to learn stuff (usually because I break something), etc. Anyone else can relate?

Bitcoin transactions per day are approaching an all-time high

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 07:48 PM PDT

Stop overpaying fees! I made a website to give better fee estimates. The goal: simpler and more accurate by observing mempool flows.

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 06:06 AM PDT

    Hey there!

Today I'd like to show you a small project I've been working on: https://bitcoiner.live/

Basically, this is the tool I wish existed, to be able to use it myself quick and easy or to recommend to newcomers when they ask questions about fees. Existing tools are either too complex with too many numbers or have a tendency to overestimate fees.

So I built this fee estimator with the following goals:

    • simplicity, the home page goes straight to the point
    • reasonable estimates: to achieve this I developed a custom algorithm that looks both at the current weight and velocity of transactions entering the mempool at different fee brackets (more details in the "how it works" tab). This is unlike some other websites that look at the previous blocks and return the median fee which yields huge overestimations, since one doesn't need to pay the median fee but just the minimum to get included in a block.

Of course, no algorithm is perfect and it certainly cannot predict when a huge spike of transactions is about to happen. But so far its output seems to correlate pretty well to what I would manually set by looking at mempool graphs.

Optionally, you can select any of 3 estimation "profiles":

    • standard: is the default one and aims to strike a good balance between cost and accuracy.
    • optimistic: slightly underestimates if your objective is fee minimization before accuracy. It might work out if the next blocks are pretty lucky, but it might take longer otherwise.
    • cautious: on the other hand is pretty greedy, use it only if you really want to be sure to target the next blocks or so even if the next blocks turn out unlucky.

As always, feedback is welcome :)

If there is interest I'll release the source code!

I traveled the world on 1 BTC -- and finally finished writing the book!

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 08:37 AM PDT

    afternoon all,

6 months ago I wrote a post: "Finished Traveling the World ... on 1 Bitcoin."

Well, the comments and questions motivated me to write a book about the journey.

I tried to get it up by today -- in honor of World Book Day.

The title is a bit cheeky:

Stolen Wallets: And Where to Buy Them.

I've always been a fan of Harry Potter, right. The titles J.K. Rowling would give. Especially "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." That's the title's inspiration -- though the content is much less P.G. haha.

I experienced far too many R-rated scenarios for "Stolen Wallets" to be anything but HBO material.

If you enjoy Breaking Bad, it's like that -- with a bit of Terry Pratchett's humor mixed in.

    Here's the back cover blurb:

    ---------------------------------------------------

What's in your wallet? You okay with a stranger poking through it? I'm not. Never in a million. My wallet is my private little hell. Receipts for things I can't afford and a picture of an ex I still miss. But there I was, standing in a grubby back alley in Bangkok. Wallets scattered on a table in front of me. Crocodile skin Gucci, scuffed generic brown leather, even a DIY duct-tape wallet. Each and every one of them hot. The product of sneaky little fingers. The karma of drunk tourists distracted by scorpions on sticks. Curiosity killed my ethics. I picked one up. It was full. Not with money, of course, but with ...

These are the stories of my travels.
    20 countries, 12 months, 1 Bitcoin.
From China to Europe. From late 2017 to late 2018. A historic year. The year of The Crypto Bubble. The big ride up.

At the start of the year I was just another desk jockey. Putting in my 9-to-5. Binge-watching Netflix alone. Then I bought that bitcoin for $4,700. Little did I know it would soon skyrocket to $20,000. Little did I know it was my golden ticket. My red carpet to a world of fast money, greed, hype, hope and corruption. Suddenly I was cruising with the crypto rich. Counting stacks of counterfeit money. Buying stolen wallets...

Until the bubble popped -- and the world of the newly rich began burning down around me.

    -------------------------------------------------------

That's back cover. I've ran it by a few people. One said it was too edgy. Another said it was too much. A third didn't say anything because he's too busy.

If you have suggestions, lay em down.

The book is an unvarnished, uncensored log of my travels. It's intense and raw. I don't sugarcoat the scams and shilling I saw. But at the same time -- the crypto communities I met around the world -- they changed my perspective and opened my mind so much that, well, all I can say is bitcoin and blockchain are freedom, truth, and our future. It's just a fact.

I'll try my damnedest to get on Youtube once a week and read a bit from the book. I'll ready up until 80% of it, I think. After that I'll stop so I don't spoil the end for the readers.

Here's my previous reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/9j2pq7/finished_traveling_around_the_world_on_1_bitcoin/

Here's the Amazon link to pre-order for anyone interested:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QKP1FPS

Youtube trailer for the book (audio's not that great, I apologize):

    https://youtu.be/51CWi2cl3TE

Also, since I'm trying to become a writer and all that jazz, I'm trying a promotion tactic. You ever hear about Marguerite deCourcelle? The lady who painted a BTC prize into one of her paintings? There's also Pascal Boyart who hid a BTC prize in his mural of a modern French Revolution.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-12-28/your-bitcoins-are-waiting-in-the-painting-if-you-can-find-them

    https://breakermag.com/street-artist-who-hid-0-26-btc-in-his-mural-just-got-a-major-bitcoin-tip/

Well, I'd like to continue their tradition. It's a fun one. Hide a BTC prize and challenge people of intellect. To that effect I've loaded up a wallet with a bit of BTC. It's a standard wallet. The seed phrase is composed of 12 random words. I've hidden the 12 random words in my book. But since hiding them in a whole book would make finding them impossible -- I'll give out clues. 12 months, 12 clues.

And since I didn't have enough money to put a whole bitcoin in the wallet as a prize (I just put in 0.1 BTC) -- I'll instead dedicate 30% of my monthly sales to the wallet until it's swept. Who knows, with BTC's fresh bull run -- I hope whoever wins will have enough BTC to go travel around the world on it -- just like I did.

A story about buying Pizza with Bitcoin

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 03:44 AM PDT

Yesterday I bought my first Pizza with Bitcoin. Sadly, this was a pretty unpleasant experience. But one I want to share with you guys. Maybe it can help someone with the same problems, maybe we can improve something. So let me start my story.

I checked a few delivery services in my area and found one that offers Bitcoins as a payment method. Since I never really used Bitcoin for payments I thought, let's try this and maybe I can even convince my wife that Bitcoin is pretty useable now.

So I chose my Pizza and some food for the wife and went on to pay for it. I had some Bitcoin (about 20 USD) on my phone wallet (Eclair) and thought that should be an easy deal. Yeah, how wrong I was...

I got to the payment process and they forwarded me to Bitpay. First thing I see is "choose your currency"

    o) Bitcoin (network cost 0.50 USD)

    o) Bitcoin Cash (network cost 0.00 USD)

It kinda felt like they wanted to push me towards BCH (maybe that's just me). But it's still nice to have some options to pay. Especially because the food delivery service only offered Bitcoin payments on his homepage.

At the same time, a countdown started to finish my payment before the order gets rejected (about 15 min).

So I chose Bitcoin and got a QR code I can scan to pay it. I scanned the code with my wallet and got the error "This is not a valid Bitcoin address". Well, shit. My countdown was already down to 12 minutes so I had to hurry and figure out what's wrong.

Next step I tried to copy the address and paste it into my wallet, but still not working. I was just getting some strange looking link (bitcoin:?r=https://bitpay.com/i/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx). Countdown was down to 10 minutes.

After that, I looked it up on google and saw that Bitpay seemingly tries to force feed their own wallet on you to make payments. Since I didn't want to download their wallet or even send my money there (especially because I only had a few minutes left), I looked further and found some help on Bitcointalk. Some users there found a way around this with using a decoder that changes the Bitpay link into an actual Bitcoin address. (https://decoder.bip70.org/).

The site itself didn't look that trustworthy but since I only got about 3 minutes left I went on to gave it a try. I sent my Bitcoin to the decoded address. And look there, it worked. Bitpay told me they see my payment but we need to wait for confirmation. But wait, there is more.

Since I didn't look into the payment details I did send a little bit too much money (included too much transaction fees). So I ended up paying something like 3x the from Bitpay recommended fee. But I didn't mind that so much. What troubled me was the message Bitpay showed me, it was something like that:

"This payment was made with a low bitcoin miner fee, which may prevent it from being accepted by the bitcoin network. This is an issue with the configuration of your bitcoin wallet. If the transaction doesn't confirm, the funds will be again in your wallet in about 48-72 hours."

And I was like, what? How could the fee be to low if I used three times more than recommended? Should I now wait 72 hours before ordering a new Pizza? Becoming more and more hungry I still decided to wait out and see if my transactions will get confirmed. And my patience got rewarded, about half an hour later they confirmed my payment and the order got routed to the Pizza Restaurant. An hour later I finally got my Pizza and it was delicious. Well, maybe because I was already dying because I was so hungry but still. At least I had a happy end.

Needlessness to say, I couldn't convince my wife to use Bitcoin for further Pizza deliveries. Moreover, I can't even recommend it to anyone new to Bitcoin because that was quite a shitty experience. Mostly because of Bitpay I would argue.

Don't get me wrong, I really love Bitcoin and the opportunities it provides. But it seems, we still have a long way to go for mass adoption (or even an easy way to order Pizza).

Since I would love to improve that process I thought about sending that delivery service some feedback. To even give them an opportunity to improve, I think they would have to move away from Bitpay to another payment service. Anything you guys can recommend for Europe?

    A Waring About LocalBitcoins.com

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 12:48 AM PDT

Be careful if you ever use LocalBitcoins, even if you've used them for a few years and found it a pleasant experience.

Until, like so many people seem to have experienced, they seize your bitcoins and put you on a forced holiday, without so much as a short note with an explanation. You can't even opt out their platform and withdraw your BTC to your own account or an exchange, or whatever.

Their behavior is worse than banks in this respect. Please be careful and consider other services instead. Or developers could get together to replace LBC with highly visible open source code and create a community trading platform with some transparency and top customer support, rather than a profit driven one centered around facilitating large trades.

Shower concern popped up about LN channel closing

    Posted: 23 Apr 2019 11:18 PM PDT

Hey. This was one of those thoughts that only pop up once in a while when you're taking a shower :p .. could be nonsense but let's hear your opinions:

Would it be possible for a future scenario that "the usual" two different types of "big services" that people are expecting exist, for (1) big money movements that happen on-chain and (2) small LN transaction providers, but here's the catch..

    (1) might be cannibalizing (2)! So what do I mean by that? Well that this (1) service actually works fine in equilibrium in such a super popular way that it drives up fees above some arbitrary threshold X which is actually the maximum threshold for service (2) to work economically (for example because closing channels for some lesser used nodes starts to become more expensive than the fees acquired by running those nodes)!

What do you say, actual possibility or totally cannot happen? And if it happens would it be even a bad thing or would it just be ok, if the market apparently prefers it that way in this particular scenario? After all, at least service (1) would be neatly running at full capacity, so the fees-model balances out supply and demand just fine and maybe the best total reward income (and underlying security provided by doing the hashing work) netted by the system as such is ensured.

What would be a possible consequence though? I could imagine that if certain more outside branches of LN stop netting enough fees from very small transactions, then they could refuse to route very small transactions? Could this give rise to some sort of 3rd layer that again provides to route and in turn bundles the smallest transactions, or am I making a thinking error here? (Similar to our physical world like superhighway -> highway -> country road).
