"If you’re putting a lot of $$$ on your Lightning routing node, please use a couple of very reliable hard drives with ZFS pool mirroring (RAID 1)! The mnemonic seed is NOT enough to recover funds from channels if something goes horribly wrong, you’ll need the latest chan state."

    Guys, we're really close.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2019 09:34 PM PST

Hey everyone, I've been really encouraged by the content being put out lately about the Lightning Network.

This is not FUD. There are legitimate, yet-unanswered questions about how it works, and how it will work (while staying decentralized) into the future.

A few of those reasons, for quick reference:

    • The Lightning Network will allow those with more BTC to accumulate more for doing next to nothing (like banks)
    • Economic incentives are already causing the formation of centralized hubs
    • The "routing problem" is unsolved
    • Any digital asset works just as well in LN as BTC

CryptoTwitter has been relatively quiet, and people are starting to see the reality of social media bots and manipulation from other aspects of society. Bitcoin is closing in on full blocks again, and personally, I'm looking forward to the fireworks. We're not sure what BTC's support is, but it could very well go below 3000 as it becomes entirely a speculative asset.

I've been writing about this for a while now via Twitter and on Eat Sleep Crypto - there are price floors created by adoption in cryptocurrencies. Without commercial transactions, BTC moves exclusively because of speculators. Once they realize they can't fast track transactions on exchanges, they'll lose interest, while payments will move to other coins.

I expect some price volatility across coins once the blocks become full again.

All to say, we're close. People are waking up, and the boulder is about to go over the edge. Content creators (and builders), keep it up. You guys are the best.

    Let's keep sharing the truth.

Batteries or Watchtowers to run a Lightning node? Yep. It's called Lightning Notwork for a reason.

    Posted: 21 Feb 2019 11:14 PM PST

If a power outage hits a major mining farm on Bitcoin Cash, the network adjusts difficulty and keeps chugging along smoothly. Significant losses or gains in hash power are commonplace for both of the Bitcoin blockchains. This inherent trait of Proof of Work blockchains is part of the brilliance that makes them decentralized.

If a power outage hits a major Lighting hub, the network is broken and funds are lost. This is because the Lightning Network forms a hub-and-spoke topology, meaning that most users rely on a handful of well connected hubs to route payments to other users on the network. This type of centralization makes crippling the Lightning Network trivial so we're likely to see outages all the time.

Funny, one of the threats to the Lightning Network is...lightning.

I've updated my bot, u/cryptochecker, to make it more useful

    Posted: 21 Feb 2019 06:31 PM PST

TL;DR for people that already know this bot: it now posts shorter comments that are easier to understand, and dumps the full detailed user summaries in a separate post in its own subreddit. This makes it less spammy and more useful in comments sections.

Quick links: FAQs, Usage, List of included subreddits.

    What's u/cryptochecker?

It's a bot designed to provide information and transparency to the communities across Reddit that are interested in cryptocurrencies. It offers 2 services:

    1. Providing short summaries of the cryptocurrency subreddits in which a user has been most active, in order to help other users estimate where their biases may lie.

    2. Providing information and links to CoinMarketCap for any token requested.

    What's in a user summary?

This bot provides a quick overview of the crypto subreddits that a user posts in the most often, as well as their total and average karma for those posts. It will also show the average sentiment of those posts (more explanation of "sentiment" here). It also links to a longer more detailed summary in its own subreddit, r/cryptochecker. This is to avoid taking up too much space in comments sections with the full results.

What coin info can the bot get?

This bot provides a table of key data on cryptocurrencies when their symbols are supplied. This table can be sorted by any column, like any other Reddit table.

    Usage:

To request a user check: reply to any comment or post they the user has made with u/cryptochecker and nothing else. Alternatively, in the body of a comment replying to the user's comment or post, include u/cryptochecker check.

To request coin info: put u/cryptochecker info somewhere in your comment, followed by some coin names, e.g. u/cryptochecker info BTC eth BCH will give information on BTC, ETH and BCH.

If you have other questions, take a look at the FAQs, where there's a lot more explanation.

Why The Lightning Network is Re-Creating the Banking System on Bitcoin (BTC).

    Posted: 21 Feb 2019 10:37 AM PST

This post was typed as a result of the following video where it is demonstrated that a LN user cannot withdraw his coins to his own control if the fees to settle on the blockhain are higher than the amount being stored in the LN channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AtEGcl7nJY

    -------

It's pretty amazing that some people have been so censored and brainwashed to the point where they can't even see that LN, practically speaking, is a horrible solution. As you demonstrated, you couldn't even withdraw your funds because the fees to do so were higher than your funds in the channel.

The LN "solution" is not a solution at all. Rather, it's an over-engineered complexity which will prevent growth.

We need easy solutions, and BCH scales with ease and practicality, with no modification on the merchant end. LN requires all new software for both users and merchants. I don't see LN winning in any scenario.

On top of that, during the next bull run, the fees on BTC will be MUCH higher than they are now, and people will not be able to withdraw their funds for the same reason that you cannot withdraw your 4 cents right now (as shown in the video). The only difference is that during the next bull run, people will be unable to withdraw much higher amounts, like $50 or higher, because the fees will be prohibitive.

I think the proponents of LN actually do not want people to withdraw their funds. They are re-creating Bitcoin BTC into a new custodial system.

Only rich entities such as banks will be able to withdraw their funds, because only they will be able to afford the fees to do so. Everyone else will be stuck keeping funds in channels always, due to high fees.

The design is pretty clear: It's a remake of what we already have today. Banks holding people's funds.
