I have Ether in an Ethereum wallet that I can't get out. I have tried everything. Any ideas?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 08:22 AM PST

I created the Ethereum contract wallet using the Ethereum wallet back in 2017. Version 0.11.1 of the Ethereum wallet never syncs no matter how long I wait (I have a Dell Precision laptop with an Intel I7 processor, 500 GB SSD and 8 GB of RAM with plenty of free hard drive space). I have downloaded and tried every available version of the Ethereum wallet available here: https://github.com/ethereum/mist/releases I can't get any of them to successfully sync. On each attempt, I delete the geth folder to allow to blockchain to start downloading from the very beginning.

I thought that I could successfully use MyEtherWallet using these instructions: https://kb.myetherwallet.com/faq/interacting-with-ethereum-multisig-wallet.html My contract is a 5 of 5 multisig, and I followed the instructions to the letter (I even noticed that he failed to mention that you have to put a 0x in front of the _h field). What happened? Signatures 1 and 5 processed correctly, but signatures 2,3, and 4 registered only 1 event in the event log even though I put in the correct _h field (the _h field obtained from etherscan.io after I submitted the execute transaction). I tried multiple times, and every time just those 3 signatures would only register 1 event.

I did everything exactly the same for signatures 2,3,4, and 5, so I don't understand why 5 succeeded and 2,3,and 4 failed.

Does anyone know of a solution that will work? I can download the latest version of geth (Constant (v1.8.20)), and it does seem to work. Ethereum wallet 0.11.1 refuses to connect to the latest version of geth (it insists on downloading and installing geth 1.8.16. I even tried installing 1.8.20 and then making the directory read-only. The Ethereum wallet did not like that at all), so if I have to uses the latest version of geth from the command line, so be it. I just don't know how to send from a multisig contract using geth. These funds have been stuck for about a year and a half, and I really need help to get them out. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you!

WBTC, I'd like to mint and burn. How do I apply to be a merchant?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 08:45 PM PST

The website is pretty blank right now. I did the contact us a while back, but no response so far and January is already here.

I'd like to be able to mint and burn WBTC. How can I do this? It seems that anyone can apply to be 'merchant'. How do I do this?

    Thanks!

a decision on the adoption of ProgPow and a tentative timeline could be reached at tomorrow's Eth Core Devs meeting

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 02:23 AM PST

    https://github.com/ethereum/pm/issues/66

I'm very pleased to see how far along ProgPow has come and that it's being evaluated as a possible viable asic-resistant PoW algo.

Unfortunately due to time constraints and the need for further testing/more mature infrastructure it won't be included into the Constantinople HF but it's highly likely it could come in the next HF(Istanbul?) in roughly 8 months or in an-hoc HF even sooner.

Is anyone building essentially an Apple App Store for Ethereum Dapps?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2019 08:43 PM PST

What I mean by that is, a decentralized explorer or marketplace that a user can use similar to how the current Apple App Store is setup (search functions, descriptions, reviews, etc.)? With such a decentralized service, Ethereum truly can compete and become a major threat to the App Store. Without it, the ecosystem will develop lots of amazing projects that cannot be searched for and found in one (or more) places. We all only currently know about the dapps being developed in this space because we choose to seek them all out. But that's not efficient and user friendly for the future-casual blockchain user.

Side note: This post was inspired by an article I read today, which made me think about how much of a threat Ethereum can be to even Apple—the story about Apple earning $256M from Netflix in 2018 for the right to include in-app subscription services on its iOS app.

Yes blockchain tech is more "inefficient" in terms of cost in relation to centralized services like the App Store, but at least any dapp, even the best ones (ala Netflix-level of success) wouldn't need permission from apple or Ethereum to add features to their dapp that benefit its users in terms of convenience (I.e., Netflix paying hundreds of millions for the right to code an in-App purchases feature into their own app). Even better, Ethereum wouldn't be able to "shut down" this service/feature because it wants to offer a competitor (apples upcoming streaming services). Also, instead of paying Apple for the right to sell on their service and to maintain the service, with Serenity-level scalability, these same devs can develop and market their services securely and relatively cheaply.

What a time to be alive.

Are there Byzantine actions that a Casper validator can take that are unprovable?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 06:08 AM PST

If a proof of stake participant engages in provably Byzantine actions, their stake would be slashed. My question is, are there any Byzantine actions that a validator can take that are unprovable and therefore there would be no punishment? Maybe something related to data availability, like withholding block information?

    Bitcoin on Ethereum

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 06:38 AM PST

It's been discussed at length before. For example in this article about using BTCRelay plus escrow plus penalties, or using RSK. https://blog.kyber.network/bringing-bitcoin-to-ethereum-7bf29db88b9a.

I'm still not aware of any working implementation. They are rather complex solutions mainly due to requiring a 2-way-peg and elaborate protocols. I was wondering if people would be happy with a one way transfer to Ethereum.

    1. Transfer BTC to a special burn address with ETH address in OP_RETURN.
    2. Redeem BETH by feeding tx details to smart contract, which uses BTCRelay to confirm tx is x blocks deep and mints the BETH to the requested address.

That's basically it. Your BTC is no longer available on the BTC network (ever), but you have it on Ethereum. If Ethereum achieves scaling and PoS, it would seem like a great way for BTC holders to move their holdings to the better technology.

This is really a thought experiment about the fact that your average joe doesn't care about "where" their Bitcoin is. As long as we treat the BETH with the same value as BTC (and why wouldn't we) then who's caring?

edit: If it had traction I could even imagine BTC wallets connecting to Ethereum and aggregating the balances.
