PSU dead after adding second Vega

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 12:53 PM PDT

    Hello folks,

I wonder if you can give me some advice with my most recent misadventure. Here's my setup.

    • GPU: Yeston RX Vega 64
    • PSU: Corsair HX1200
    • MB: Asus PRIME Z370-P
    • CPU: Celeron G4900
    • Risers: 6 x Yikeshu PCE164P-N03 Ver 006C

After testing a bit with a single Vega 64, which was mostly working, I wanted to add a second one. Both are manufactured by Yeston (never heard of it before either, but it seems to be just the reference design), thought I have not used the second one before this. I powered one with a 8pin and 6 pin (through the riser, via the 8->6+2pin cable) which should work according to my research given that the PSU promises to deliver up to 40A per cable (even though it is outside of the spec of 150W per 8pin connector, see also this thread and the table on this review). The second one was powered again via an 8pin cable and the riser via a straight 6pin male to male, 16 AWG from an Amazon third party seller (offer listing is down 🤔 cached)

As soon as I hit the power button, the PSU stopped working. No flickering, no sound, no smoke. The LEDs on the MB went off. I disconnected the GPUs and removed all power cables except for the MB one, but to no avail, looks like something has died. What happened? Any advice?

To summarize, I made the following changes over the previous, working setup:

    • Added second GPU (not tested before)
    • Added second riser
    • Added 6pin male to male cable for second riser
    • Powered each GPU with a single 8pin cable (in addition to power via riser)

Max Temp on Nvidia without Afterburner

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 03:10 PM PDT

    Hi!

Does anyone know a software to set the max temperature on a Nvidia GPU? The fan should be at 100% when the max temperature is reached. I've tried nvidiainspector but it isn't working!

    Thanks

Troubleshoot help request: PSU2 died and will no longer start; have swapped in 3rd alternate PSU and still no luck. Details in text...

    Posted: 29 Oct 2018 09:39 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm using 2x EVGA 1300w G2 Golds to power a 6x 1080 TI rig. All cards are TDP underclocked and the entire system only pulls 1200w.

The other day my 2nd PSU went dead (fan inside it stopped turning, cards 4-6 not powering on). Here's what I've tried:

    • Swap out PSU connector cable (done this with 3 separate 24-pin PSU connectors)
    • Replaced "bad PSU2" with new 850w PSU ("PSU3")
    • Mixed and matched cables just for the hell of it (everything is a G2 PSU) including power cord (everything matches again now)
    • Switched outlets for PSU in the wall (i.e., flipped top and bottom plugin locations)
    • Checked circuit to make sure it wasn't tripped
    • Plugged in lamp to ensure circuit works
    • Can run first 3 GPUs on "good PSU1" and mine no problem (everything boots okay)
    • Tried to run rig on "new 850 PSU3" only (i.e., Mobo cable direct, CPU, and SDD) and it won't start
    • Replaced good PSU1 with "bad PSU2" in terms of primary position, and PSU2 does start

My only conclusion so far is that whatever PSU is in position 2 will not start, but I'm getting completely stumped. I've switched out every part I can think of. Right now the rig is running at half capacity because that's better than nothing.

I hope you guys can help - please let me know if you have any ideas, thanks!
