    u/Kain_niaK, I don't want your money.

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 08:16 AM PDT

    Yesterday after the Charlie Lee and Roger Ver debate video came out u/Kain_niaK made a bet that I couldn't complete a lightning payment to one of the 4000 merchants that CoinGate enabled, if successful he would pay me 1 BCH. You can see our exchange here https://np.reddit.com/r/btc/comments/9ldi7t/roger_ver_debates_charlie_lee_the_lightning/e766136/. He lost. The video of my transaction is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryW1NhpgF7w. So far he has sent me around .1 BCH and has stated he will pay it in increments. I am here to let him and all others know I am forgiving his debt. If he wants to move forward with payment that's on him but I am not interested in frivolously shaming and taking money from someone who needs it for his other real life obligations. $500 to me isn't easy to come by and I assume the same goes for him. I intend to return the money he already sent.

    The thing is we all know why we are here, aside for those looking to make a quick buck, and that's to see the embodiment of real life sound liberating money. Something the world needs to move to the enlightenment of mankind. After watching his youtube videos at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLni7r-xOl68fPgmQEsAGAA the guy just seems like a normal dude who like all of us is excited about this technology. u/Kain_niaK doesn't seem like an asshole and doesn't came off like a real arrogant rich twat like some in this space. If that were the case I would have no problem taking his money. He is a normal person who has struggles and finds enjoyment in certain things.

    u/Kain_niaK I am also a piano/keyboard player. In fact my that is one of my life's greatest pleasures. My username CP70 is in fact a reference to the Yamaha CP70 electric piano. What say you that we put this behind us, be more open to our opposite communities and instead have a chat about our instruments and bands we enjoy? That is more interesting to me.

    *edit: I have cross posted this in r/btc https://np.reddit.com/r/btc/comments/9ln5m5/ukain_niak_i_dont_want_your_money/

    edit2* u/Kain_niaK has agreed the funds have been sent back and he wrote a wonderful little tune to boot. Thread here: https://np.reddit.com/r/btc/comments/9ln5m5/ukain_niak_i_dont_want_your_money/e78a6zo/?context=3

    Bitfact of the day. #cxihub #bitcoin

    Why is there a constant price difference between exchanges?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2018 03:11 AM PDT

    For example at the time im writing this, Bitmex: 6573$ Binance: 6622$

    I know some price differences can occur but this difference is going on for the last couple of days.

    Does this has something to do with tether (USDT) or with Bitmex?

    Forward Blocks - A proposal to increase on-chain settlement capacity by 3584x with a soft-fork

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 03:19 PM PDT

    Mark Friedenbach, a bitcoin core developer, proposes a new idea he is calling Forward Blocks, for Bitcoin. It enables all sorts of amazing capabilities via soft-fork. You can read the whole paper here ( http://freico.in/forward-blocks-scalingbitcoin-paper.pdf ) and I believe he will be presenting it this weekend at Scaling Bitcoin.

    Here's a snippet from the paper that does a great job summarizing a lot of the potential improvements:

    We demonstrated that the idea of forward blocks provides a unifying mechanism that:

    • Provides on-chain settlement scaling of up to 3584x current limits as a soft-fork;

    • Provides for an (optional) proof-of-work upgrade as a soft fork;

    • Limits growth of validation costs with a flexible weight limit;

    • Decreases centralization risks through the adoption of sharding; and

    • Provides a framework for ledger accounting in future protocol extensions including but not limited to:

    – A rebatable fee market with consensus-determined transaction clearing fee rates;

    – Confidential transactions for obscuring transaction amounts;

    – Mimblewimble, ring signatures, or anonymous spends for obscuring the spend graph; and

    – Sidechain value-transfer mechanisms.

    While there are many moving parts to this proposal, it is not beyond the level of complexity of prior extensions adopted by bitcoin (e.g. segregated witness), and achieves a variety of benefits comparable in magnitude.

    "If ECDSA is broken, Bitcoin can remain reasonably secure if you don't reuse addresses." Is this true?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2018 12:19 AM PDT

    If this is actually true, what makes it true?

    That post is pretty old. Has anything significant changed? What's the recommended best practice these days if you need to reuse an address? For example you are a business and need to have a single address that can be published and it wouldn't be practical to keep constantly changing it?

    Is this also actually true: "(That is, an address's sent transactions might not actually be meaningful, related to its receipts, or even made by the person who receives money at that address.) "? If so, why would that be the case? It sounds like the OP is suggesting an address can somehow "send" bitcoins that it never "received" - how can that be?

    "It is not a speculative investment even though it is being used as such by other people. As Bitcoin network grows the value of Bitcoin grows. As people move into Bitcoin for payments and receipts they stop using US Dollars, Euros and Chinese Yuan which in the long-term devalues these currencies."

    Gemini BTC withdrawal not showing up after 30 minutes. Did the scheduled maintenance break something?

    Posted: 05 Oct 2018 09:12 PM PDT

    I tried to withdraw 0.097 BTC to my personal wallet 30 minutes ago. Gemini says the transaction was sent to the network, but I've tried multiple Block Explorers and they all say the transaction doesn't exist. Yet my BTC is gone from Gemini. Am I completely fucked?
