    GPU Server case

    Posted: 02 Jul 2018 08:57 AM PDT

Hey guys im looking to expand my farm a little more, was wondering what the best Server rackable case you have or have used for 6-8 gpu minnig rigs. Looking where is has enough space for the gpus with enough space for proper size PSU and cable managment, and most importantly good airflow.

Those of you waiting for 11XX Nvidia Cards – Why I think 11XX cards may not be the game changer some might be expecting

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:55 AM PDT

With daily mining profits being so low, and many people waiting on the sidelines for next gen cards from Nvidia, used 10 series cards can be picked up very cheap.

I made a little spreadsheet breaking down the cost of 10XX vs 11XX cards, and their hashing performance. Yes I had to make several assumptions on what the 11 series cards will cost, how efficient they'll be, and how they'll perform, however I've read all the rumored spec sheets and I don't think they'll be that far off.

I also based hash performance off Equihash Sol/s. Given the recent rise of ASIC's this probably wont be an algo GPU's are hashing in the near future, but I still think it gives a good overall idea as to what to expect on other algo's. Obviously more memory intensive algo's will see a larger performance increase with the rumored GDDR6 memory, although I also don't believe this will have as massive of an effect as some make it out to be.

    Assumptions made:

    GTX 1180

    • MSRP of $699 (+tax)

    • 15% performance gain over 1080ti

    • TDP 170-200W (Can probably reduce power to 130W)

    GTX 1170

    • MSRP of $499 (+tax)

    • 95% performance of a 1080ti

    • TDP 140-160W (Can probably reduce power to 110W)

    --See spreadsheet here--

Assumed cost of $0.10/kWh, sales tax of 5% (no tax on used cards), and running cards 24/7 for two years.

    My findings/thoughts:

If the 1180 retails at $699, even with the efficiency increase, its actually pretty poor value compared to some of the deals that can be found on used 10XX cards right now. At $699, with a kWh cost of $0.10, I calculate a total cost price of $846.27 over 2 years, or $1.01 per Sol/s (assuming 840 Sol/s).

The 1170 at $499 would be much better value, coming in at a 2 year total cost of $618.99, or $0.88 per Sol/s (assuming 703 Sol/s), but still not the game changer some might be expecting.

2x 1070's at $300 each would produce a total cost of $781.44 over 2 years, or $0.91 per Sol/s (430 Sol/s X2), slightly worse than predicted on the 1170, however you can buy these TODAY, not 2-4 months down the road, more than making up for the slight overall cost bump.

Obviously if you're power costs are higher you'll have more to gain from the increased efficiency of the 11XX cards. The 1180 is better value than the 2x 1070's only if you're paying $0.23+/kWh.

    --Spreadsheet with 23 cents/kWh--

All of this assumes you'll even be able to get your hands on 11XX cards at MSRP when they're released as well, unlikely given the anticipated demand. I doubt 1180's will be readily available for under $800 when first released.

Also FYI I used 1070's as a baseline and for the example because they seem to be much easier to find for reasonable prices at the moment (~$300). 1070ti's would be better performance/efficiency wise but I don't think you'd see it in cost savings at the moment.

TLDR; 10 series cards are great value still, especially if you're kWh rate is reasonable (<$0.10)

Installing second RX580 on Gigabyte GA-AX370, Ubuntu won't boot

    Posted: 01 Jul 2018 01:42 PM PDT

I have a Gigabyte GA-AX370 Mobo running Ubuntu 16.04. I have two RX580 graphics cards, both of which work fine with this setup. I want to use *both* of them, however, and when I tried installing both I kept getting AMD-VI errors on boot up. Again, using just one card or the other works fine - but the one time I put both in it wouldn't boot to save my life. Any suggestions?
