Tensor cores and their impact on mining

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 02:49 AM PDT

    Hi guys

Please help me understand if tensor cores like the ones in the Volta GPUs have any impact on gpu mining (positive or negative) and if they have 0 impact as I guess, does that mean that only the CUDA cores are used and the tensor cores are idle?

ETN Reversal - Going Back to ASIC miners!

    ETN embracing asic mining

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 06:22 PM PDT

To quote Richard Ells' email, "... Because ASICS run cooler, quieter and use a fraction of GPU rig power, they are suitable for MORE people to run in their homes."

smh they're going back to cryptonight. I wonder if Jihan had a hand in this, or was the stupidity originating solely from ETN's dev team.

I know it's not profitable to mine ETN so we gpuminers might not care about this development. Still, if pro-ASIC actors can buy hashrate to cause large wavelike fluctuations in difficulty, causing block time to spike, and drive small coins to be ASIC friendly? Dark times indeed.

    Monthly Simple Questions Thread

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 08:09 PM PDT

Thanks to /r/buildapc, we're stealing this periodic thread idea! Thanks guys!

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and searching before posting!).

    Examples of questions:

    • What should I mine?

    • Is this build good enough to mine?

    • Which PSU should I get for _____ GPUs?

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Please remember that we're here to HELP you, not do it for you.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/gpumining mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Noobie here. Looking for any advice or concerns regarding the parts list for my first build.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 07:04 PM PDT

Like the title says, I'm looking for any opinions you all might have on my parts list for my first ever attempt at building a mining rig. I apologize in advance if this isn't the correct subreddit for this kind of post. If not, please direct me to the best one.

So I would say I'm on a pretty tight budget - not looking to spend more than about $1200 USD right now. I wanted a rig that will be able to handle up to 6-8 GPUs, but I plan on starting with just 1 or 2 GPUs up front and working may way up. I know I could wait and save up but I'm really excited to get started, even if I'll just be breaking even for now.

Anyway, here is a list of the primary components I've picked out:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

    Type Item Price
    CPU Intel - Pentium G4400 3.3GHz Dual-Core Processor $46.49 @ OutletPC
CPU Cooler Cooler Master - GeminII M4 58.4 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler $33.83 @ Newegg Marketplace
    Motherboard Gigabyte - GA-H110-D3A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard $74.98 @ Amazon
    Memory Corsair - 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory $78.89 @ OutletPC
Storage SanDisk - SSD PLUS 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive $48.64 @ Amazon
Video Card MSI - Radeon RX 580 8GB ARMOR OC Video Card $282.00 @ B&H
Power Supply Corsair - Professional 1200W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply $179.99 @ Newegg
    Operating System Microsoft - Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit $95.89 @ OutletPC
Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts
    Total (before mail-in rebates) $890.71
    Mail-in rebates -$50.00
    Total $840.71
    Generated by PCPartPicker 2018-07-03 21:50 EDT-0400

What I'm mainly looking for is for someone to tell me if I'm making a critical mistake with my parts choices. Feel free to rip me a new one if I'm being a total dumbass. I've done several hours of research, but I realize that isn't much for a hobby like this - so I will continue to dig deeper. But also let me know if you can think of any improvements without significantly changing the price tag.

I should add that I plan on starting out using a simple mining GUI software, such as nicehash, before I venture out into solo mining specific coins.

    Thx.

    Connecting PCI-E cables to peripherals

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 10:05 AM PDT

Can I connect pci-e cable to psu peripherial connector? I need this to power RX 550 that draw around 40W. I can use SATA/molex adapter but many people think that's not good.

    RX 580 Cryptonight-Heavy Hashrates

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 09:36 AM PDT

Hello! I have recently built a 6xRX 580 8GB mining rig, I would like to mine Loki but I only seem to get 700h per card when others seem to get 850+ I was wondering if people could help understand what I need to do as I can't find info on it online. Ive heard of dual-threading but I dont necessarily understand how to do that as my rig is running smos. Thanks in advance.
