Swift admits its blockchain not on par with Ripple's

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 04:38 PM PST

This article by the FT is behind a paywall. This is the piece:

Swift says blockchain not ready for mainstream use (https://www.ft.com/content/966f5694-22c6-11e8-ae48-60d3531b7d11)

Blockchain technology needs to make more progress before it can handle the billions of dollars of daily cross-border payments between the world's banks, Swift has concluded after testing the new system on its interbank messaging network.

Swift, which handles more than half of all high-value cross-border payments, said on Thursday that it had completed a "proof of concept" test of blockchain technology to reconcile international payments between the accounts of 34 banks. The test underlines how much of the world's most established financial institutions are experimenting with blockchain technology to improve their performance under pressure from more technology-savvy challengers.

Swift's finding that the technology is still not ready for mainstream use echoes similar conclusions of many other top banks and regulators.

While Swift said the test "went extremely well" it concluded that "further progress is needed" on the blockchain — or distributed ledger technology (DLT) — "before it will be ready to support production-grade applications in large-scale, mission-critical global infrastructures".

The Brussels-based messaging system, which is owned by about 11,000 banks, also said that many lenders would have to significantly overhaul their operations and systems before they could switch to a blockchain-based system to handle their cross-border payments.

Swift said it had tested a "private confidential ledger" to record transactions related to the so-called Nostro accounts that banks use to fund their cross-border payments. It said the 28 banks that carried out live tests on the system found it could make the costly and slow process of reconciling their accounts more efficient and reduce the amount of money they needed to hold in various Nostro accounts around the world.

"Although the proof of concept demonstrated DLT could improve Nostro liquidity management and reconciliation processes, it also revealed that the prerequisites will have to be met before banks can enjoy the full benefits of switching to a DLT process," said Damien Vanderveken, head of research and development at Swift.

Mr Vanderveken told the Financial Times that the test had showed there would be significant "operational challenges" to using blockchain technology for all of its 11,000 members. This is not least because the 28 banks that ran tests on the system required the creation of 528 sub-ledgers to avoid confidential information being seen by rival banks. To roll it out to all of Swift's members, Mr Vanderveken estimated it would require 100,000 sub-ledgers to be created, making them extremely unwieldy to maintain, upgrade or configure.

However, he said: "I am convinced that these obstacles will be overcome," adding that Swift was determined to be "ready to roll it out when the technology is ready," though he declined to predict how soon that would be.

Swift has faced concerns about its security since cyber criminals stole almost $100m from the Bangladesh central bank two years ago by hacking into its systems to access its Swift codes.

With several start-ups, such as Ripple, seeking to use blockchain technology to speed up and cut the cost of cross-border payments between banks, Swift has also been investing heavily to improve its own efficiency.

The non-profit co-operative said recently that it had cut the time taken for money to move across borders to below 30 minutes for half the payments it handles.

**update: How many years behind Ripple do you think SWIFT is? I think the biggest risk (for Ripple) is that it fails to secure enough adopters before SWIFT catches up. In any case "our system would need 100,000 sub-ledgers"....LMFAO

XRP Update: New Episodes for All Your Favorite TV Shows

More setbacks for Bitcoin are acting like an anchor on the crypto market. In today's blog entry, I talk about those factors, as well as how I see XRP diverging from Bitcoin's market leading dominance.

For Ripple and XRP, it's been nonstop good news over the last four days, with the big news being the anticipated release of the MoneyTap application by the Japanese Banking Consortium (JBC). I discuss the details behind this application plus I have some surprises about possible business deals you might not know about. It includes the partial acquisition of a hardware wallet company by SBI, the addition of XRP to the BitIT marketplace, a Grayscale investment fund specifically targeting XRP, and the rumor of Ripple technology underlying a deal between Saison and Grab.

Rounding out the list is an update for those in the XRP community eagerly awaiting the release of the Kyte wallet!

I hope you enjoy - please leave any feedback below.

    Thank you & sincerely, -Hodor

Guys, before I buy some more XRP can someone fill me in why the entire market is on a decline?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 05:48 PM PST

Obviously buying low is the best option, and we are seeing some lows all over right now.

I just do not know when I should buy more. Every day I think its the lowest it can possibly get, then it sinks some more.p

what is going on ? is it XRP loosing value, BTC? ETH? what?

I almost feel like if its too good to be true then maybe it is. Maybe I should not invest?

    Strong support

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 08:06 PM PST

Call me crazy but i do believe that the correction will be over in as little as 1-2 days. All indicators from A throu Z support UPWARD movement. The last time i saw such scenario was with btc in early february. Also dont forget that Santander is launching Ripple based blockchain app before end of month. Might not be a huge deal but every step done is like a layout,a step closer for the implementetion and eventually the use of XRP. Hold ♥‿♥

Why are we desperately waiting for a financial institution to participate for an xrp to cost more!?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 11:39 AM PST

I'm really having a hard time understanding why we need some sort of a bank to participate in order for us to find more value in each coin. Bitcoin didn't have any institution for it to get expensive. The people on the exchanges made it that expensive. I honestly don't buy into the idea that there are fewer bitcoins than xrp. People decide how much it costs.

We already know xrp's transaction technology is so much better, faster, and cheaper. Why don't we have xrp debit cards?! Why aren't we just using xrp?! And also why is everyone want to use coinbase?! They are reporting all of your activity to the government. Why do you even trust them?

Think I lost my money on a transaction

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 09:58 PM PST

Hey all - newbie here on the transactions part. I sent 1000+ Ripple from Toastwallet to changelly to convert to ETH and sent to GDAX. The money left from my toast wallet but under changelly it says waiting for payment for hours. I also did a mistake and on changely I added a little larger amount of Ripple to be transfered 2 more.

When I go on Toast under transaction I see the right address for Changelly and when I click on the transaction and takes me to the Ripplr RPC tool (it has already input a number) I hit get info (not sure exactly what all these number mean) but at the very end under validated it says true. What do I do?

CoolWallet and the like. (Debit card like crypto cards.)

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 05:26 PM PST

If you were to get a card like this and use it to pay for purchases would you get taxed for both the sales tax of the item and the capital gains tax of selling the crypto? Seems like a big reason not to spend crypto if that is the case.

    XRP a security or no?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2018 06:05 AM PST

I think it's a good chance that most of the ICOs and ERC20 tokens will be considered securities. What does everyone think about XRP? After reading the definition of the Howey test it seems to apply to XRP. I posted this comment in daily discussion but thought I would get a better response as a post. I'm not an XRP investor so I thought I would ask the experts here. My second question is more broad. Will tokens that are considered securities be restricted to accredited investors only? (Including all the existing ERC20 tokens)
