Someone did this in the Nano sub (I don't hold Nano but I'm subscribed) and I thought it was interesting. You know you have a solid position if you can argue for the other side and make the doubters' and haters' argument better than they can.

Or if you're brave enough to voice your own doubts, so you can see if you can defeat them instead of ignoring them.

Intelligent FUD please. We don't really need the usual banks won't use XRP FUD because we have to answer it all the time, although if you really think many banks won't use XRP you can certainly say so and say why.

    Devil's advocate anybody?

Admittedly it only effects the US market so far, all trades are recorded and given to the IRS. Could this do more damage to XRP if it were listed, than Coinbase not listing XRP?

If Twitter comments give any indication of the general reception, this may be Coinbase's "myspace" moment. I'm not a US resident, but if I were I would no longer choose to use Coinbase as every trade is taxed, rather than profit and loss.

    Thoughts?

I have seen countless interviews with Brad and that man knows what he is talking about. Although, I do feel as if he uses the phrase"solving real problems" as a filler to answer questions in a non direct way. It's a good saying to talk around the technicalities to what is actually being done. I wanna hear more about the teams effort going into this next phase. Wanna hear more about customers they are after and what they are doing to make that happen. New announcements are great but I wanna see a preempted attack on one of the big company's lol.

    What Market Cap really means

    Posted: 12 Mar 2018 06:31 AM PDT

Hey everyone - I thought it would be worthwhile discussing and educating one another about perhaps the biggest mystery in the crypto-verse: Market Capitalisation. With this post I hope to address the misconceptions around it, which I think are particularly important for XRP.

So obviously the following is just my current understanding, and part of this post is me hoping to build upon that understanding. Feedback is welcome.

Often we see market cap used as an argument for the price of X coin reaching/not reaching Y price. This is a rather common thing to see, if not here, then more so in general cryptocurrency forums.

I think there are two misconceptions coming into play regarding Market cap:

    • Market Cap = Supply x Price

    • Market Cap represents the amount of money invested in/put into/"captured by" an asset/coin.

Hopefully by addressing the first misconception the second will clear itself up. (And again, critique and audit of this post is very welcome.)

The simple formula for market cap and it's leaning on the common sense idea of supply and demand driving price is perhaps why it is so popular, but perhaps also it's downfall. The formula for market cap is:

Market Cap = Available Supply x Market Value

Market Value = the last agreed price for an asset on a particular exchange. Ref 1

The ambiguity of the "price" in the common form of the formula is the sticking point. Let's say that some asset has a supply of 10 million units, and the current price on the market is $1. The market cap is $10 million. If I decide to place an order for one unit for $2, then at the moment that my order is completed, the market value (the last agreed price) is $2, which means that the market capitalisation is now $20 million!

I have managed to double the market capitalisation by only investing $1 extra into the asset. This is of course an extreme example - however it demonstrates the disparity between the metric of "Market Cap" against the actual amount of money invested into an asset.

    In other words:

Although it is used often to describe a company, market cap does not measure the equity value of a company. Only a thorough analysis of a company's fundamentals can do that. It is inadequate to value a company because the market price on which it is based does not necessarily reflect how much a piece of the business is worth. Ref 2

Therefore, market capitalisation cannot be used as a valid metric to represent the amount of money within/being put into an asset, or group of assets. In fact, the only situation where the market cap does accurately represent the money invested into an asset, is when there is only one unit of that asset available (i.e. when the Market Cap = Market Value).

In the other extreme, the larger the available supply, the bigger the disparity between market cap and invested money.

Therefore, using market cap as an argument for some asset never reaching a particular value due to "the market cap would have to 'capture' (insert infeasible sum here)" is defunct. It is based on a flawed understanding of a metric.

As an example: The market cap of all the world's real estate is roughly $200 trillion, whereas the world economy's GDP (effectively the amount of money currently in existence) is $80 trillion. Ref 3

I would be interested in your opinions regarding sharing this post with the wider crypto-community (pending review and input!).

Thanks to all who made it to the end! Apologies for no TL;DR.
