    Challenge with Ethereum (Steve Jobs)

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 02:50 PM PST

I think this video describes well one challenge that Ethereum is facing right now. We have a bunch of cool tech but dont yet know how to please the end user. Jobs talks about how its important to start with the end user and make tech for that as opposed to making the tech first and then finding a way to market it.

Sounds relevant to me as currently we are trying to make Ethereum useful for real life applications. I guess the end user perspecive this is how plasma development started.

In NYC? Hosting a blockchain hack

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 01:07 PM PST

Hey all, if any of you are based in NYC, I'm putting together a one-day hackathon at the end of the month. It'll be good for devs who are newer to blockchain dev AND for already experienced folks who want to work on a new project:

    nycblockchainhack.com

We've gotten ConsenSys as a sponsor so we locked down a nice location in West SoHo, and got some awesome mentors and judges such as Jack Tatar, author of the book Cryptoassets, and Tori Bergeron, head of product at blockchain.com.

Tickets start at $30, which include workshops on Truffle, Metamask, web3, Hyperledger, as well as mentorship, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and prizes.

Here is a discount code too (available until March 15): REDDIT10

Hope to see you there 🙂

ERC20 trading on new decentralized exchange, DubiEx!

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 12:19 PM PST

A new decentralized exchange called DubiEx was just released a few weeks ago. It's still quite new and doesn't have a whole lot of volume, but is extremely promising.

It's the first fully decentralized exchange with zero fees (not counting eth transaction fees). It's also extremely user friendly, and you can fulfill orders directly from a Metamask wallet instead of having to deposit the funds into a smart contract first.

There's also a few other cool features, but I'll let you guys check it out for yourself.

Most of the volume is in: https://dubiex.com/DUBI/ETH

Code from the exchange can be found here, so you can verify the legitimacy of everything if you are skeptical. https://github.com/nionis/dubiex

    Good luck, and happy trading!

Should I invest time into learning to program dApps?

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 04:59 AM PST

Recently I've tried getting into programming smart contract via this udemy course (https://www.udemy.com/ethereum-and-solidity-the-complete-developers-guide/). But before investing further time into it I have some basic questions about ETH:

    1. What stops people from just copying a smart contract and undermining the company that is behind it? It seems like this will just prevent companies from developing smart contracts when they can't hide their code and it can be stolen so easily.

    2. https://dappradar.com/, stateofthedapps.com Is this all ETH smart contracts currently are? Gambling and simple gaming apps? Are there any working dApps with bigger goals and visions than those? Most of the projects on the second sites have been abandoned and don't even work.

I thought that the progress on dApps would have been greater than this and I am a bit letdown by those projects. That's why I stopped and tried to reasess if it's even worth it to get into programming smart contracts. Anyone in a similar situations and can restore my faith into ETH? I've started as an investor into crypto but I am a technical person and I like blockchain tech.

Cryptocup: Interesting Ethereum World Cup Game

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 06:19 AM PST

    Hi Guys,

You might be aware of the project, I don't know. We are finishing the smart contract and the landing page is being launched by Friday.

Actually, we will be presenting the project for the first time at the ETHCC (https://ethcc.io/) in Paris on March 9th. Would love to see you there or contact me if you are in Paris.

Our game is complex to build but very easy to play.

The game consists on predicting the World Cup matches (group matches and knock out matches) and get a unique ERC 721 token for each predicted World Cup. Players will pay a fee in ETH to participate. Depending on your predictions and the real results you will earn points. If your token finishes in the top positions, the Smart Contract will allow you to redeem your prize (in ETH). 10% of the tokens will be rewarded (the payouts will be soon released on the Whitepaper).

Once the World Cup starts, we will launch the Exchange. You will be able to sell/buy your token to other users. This is awesome as you might be holding a potential winning token but you prefer to sell it for a price you believe is fair and do "cash out".

Finally, I would like to point out 2 interesting points about our ERC 721

    • 1st time ERC 721 are backed by a real price
    • 1st time ERC 721 are custom made

Hope you will enjoy the game. Any questions I am more than happy to answer. I am really excited about it as I am a Soccer fan (probably going to the World Cup) and a Blockchain enthusiast since 2015

ERC 891: PPoW extension for ERC20 [Part 2]

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 05:31 PM PST

In the STEEM post above I explain my reasoning for why Ethereum needs PPoW to transition safely into proof of stake.

    Quick summary:

In few words, ERC 891 proposes a way to introduce traditional hash mining to Ethereum. Moreover, pseudo proof-of-work or PPoW as two major advantages compared to traditional mining are asynchronous mining and bundle mining.

PPoW relies on the existence of a secure hash function, which is the hash from private keys into addresses, and that the possible private key combinations is large enough. The ERC891 mining reward is a function of the address value itself, which is up to the developers to decide.

How does PPoW help secure Ethereum if not by block mining? It incentivizes users to run nodes, full or pruned. You can read a more detailed description of PPoW on the GitHub issue, but the general idea is that the claimable amount of tokens is a function of the address.

I would like to ask u/vbuterin and Vlad for their opinion on this matter if taking this precaution is worthwhile.

I made a front end for Christian Lundkvist's Simple MultiSig Wallet contract

    Posted: 07 Mar 2018 09:20 AM PST

I was working for some associates who are doing an ICO, and they needed a multisig wallet. At first I recommended Gnosis, but then two things caused me to reconsider: 1) I had just read Christian Lundkvist's proposal for the simplest possible multisig wallet -- and it made sense, especially because the whole reason that my employers wanted a multisig wallet was for security -- and the parity debacle was still fresh, and 2) At that time gas prices were hovering around 60GWei, and I thought they might go even higher. Since the Gnosis wallet is "fully featured" (aka relatively bloated), it takes more than 2M gas to deploy -- and even simple transactions were expensive. So the Lundkvist wallet was less expensive, and arguably more secure.

Anyhow, enough about why -- In the end I created a front end for the Lundkvist MultiSig Wallet, and my employers, riverdimes.io, agreed to make it open source, and free for anyone to use, hosted on their web-server (it's good PR). It deploys an exact snapshot of the contract, from github, which means that even if for some reason the riverdimes front-end became unusable, the contract is still sort of standard, easily understood, and could still be used via some other front end, or even via MEW.

I'm very pleased with myself... I really like the simplicity of Christian Lundkvist's contract; and I tried to reflect that in the front-end, which is spartan. So go check it out: https://riverdimes.io/wallet

Hi all, I'm trying to find more information about fizzy.axa's travel insurance smart contract.

I've done a lot of Googling, but I haven't found much beyond marketing material.

Would anyone have some pointers to contract code or blockchain address?
