Great speech and Q&A from Coinbase's Josh Ellithorpe just now at Satoshi's Vision. I now realise why it took CB a while to get BCH running, and I also realise why they hate BCore & Segshit and are (more than likely) hoping for a flippening really soon :)

Cobra-Bitcoin: 'Overt version rolling ASICBOOST causes enough disruption that it requires updating Core to hide scary warnings [...] If this gets merged, it means that the [Core] implementation would be updated [...] just to make it easier for BtcDrak's business to use their patented technology'

Rejecting technology because there are nefarious use cases is 100% wrong.

    Posted: 24 Mar 2018 10:37 AM PDT

I've seen this argument against colored coins, and crypto in general pop up in a several different threads, and I wanted to address it, because there are serious problems with the logic behind it, and it needs to be put to rest.

    1. Technology is a tool. It is incapable of being good or evil in and of itself. This is true of cars, steel, rockets, video cameras, the internet. They can all do great good or great harm based on how they are used, but with all of these (and crypto) it's the people who use the technology for ill or good. A blockchain transaction is good if it's helping people send money back home to relatives in a different country without paying massive fees, it's bad if it's laundering money. Should we blame the transaction?

    2. The internet started as a DARPA research initiative, peer-to-peer started as a way to pirate music, bitcoins 1st use case was buying and selling drugs, the 1st use case for steel was better weapons. Often people that want to misuse a technology are the first ones to adopt it, but it's the people, not the technology that are responsible. The internet makes all kinds of awful things possible, but I don't blame child porn on Tim Berners Lee or the internet, and I think everyone will agree that the internet is still a useful tool.

    3. Useful technology WILL be adopted. There isn't one blockchain. It's not up to you or me what people want to be able to do on the blockchain, and if there's a compelling technology people WILL use it for good AND for evil. Technology is a freight train, and history is littered with folks that tried to stand on the tracks with protest signs. We call them Luddites. Even if you wanted to stop a particular blockchain technology, if it's compelling and people want it, it will appear somewhere else. If it's truly useful people will just start using that tool (coin) instead of your inferior, less useful tool (coin). You cannot stop it, you will get run over.

    4. Even if you could neuter the progress of technology, it's almost never preferable. You lose every positive use case along with the bad. Should we destroy the internet because there's child porn on it? Should we ban chemistry because it can be used to make chemical weapons? Most technology makes the world a better place, even after you take into account the ways that it can be misused.

    5. It's not OKAY that people abuse techonology, but it's the role of society (government, regulators, the people) to decide what is and isn't an appropriate use for any technology, not the developers. Every society comes up with rules for how technology can be used and implemented. It has already begun with the blockchain and it will continue. Ross Ulbricht is not the blockchain, neither are hackers using ransomware. When people abuse technology you punish the people, not the tool, and you develop policies, protocols, and better tools to limit the ability of people to continue to do so, you don't throw up your hands and just stop everyone from using the tool for anything.

    6. We don't have the power to stop what's coming, we only have the power to screw things up for BCH by playing ostrich and sticking our heads in the sand. People will use it do bad things, as well as good, but being afraid won't stop it. Instead we have to move into the future with our eyes open, do our best to anticipate abuse cases and mitigate them where possible, but rejecting the emergent properties of the blockchain wholesale is the wrong approach, and frankly won't work. Just look at BTC. Core tried to decide for everyone how they were allowed to use their blockchain, and now we have hundreds. They limited functionality to only their prescribed use cases because they thought they got to decide what people could do with a blockchain. How did that work out for them?

    Edited for grammar/typos.

Bitpay evidently does not support my wallet (coinomi). WTF! They are refusing to give me a fucking address and instead will only give me a url. I get the security benefits, I really do, but I need to pay a bill and should not have to set up, backup, and fund a new wallet just to pay a bill.

half a year since the fork if I had to choose what I'm most happy about it'd be breaking away from the Blockstream dictatorship - what's the point in having a decentralized coin when a single company has absolute control over it?

Don't be provoked by their antics Don't drop to their level Have confidence in Bitcoin Cash (check out the livestreams if you ever had any doubt about where this is going) Just continue spreading the word of Bch Spend and replace whenever you can Time to step away from the silly arguments The end goal here is always the most important thing Time to stop calling Bch 'The real Bitcoin' It is Bitcoin Cash, nothing else

Solution to branding (0-conf. etc...)... maybe "we" know too much by being too close... Simplify KISS

    Posted: 24 Mar 2018 11:15 PM PDT

We may have to think a little differently about BCH branding/promoting to new users/merchants). Yes we know that 0-Conf. is VERY reliable/fast etc... But should we even be talking about these details in the beginning (unless/when questioned...) with prospective users/merchants?

The typical new user/merchant probably has not heard of/doesnt know about:

    • 10min. block time
    • 0-Conf.
    • Crippled coin slowness/fee problems
    • etc...

Lets not confuse them at the start which could just lead to slower adoption.

Maybe promoters of BCH should just focus (at least at the beginning) on the key aspects of BCH from a higher-level perspective.

    • Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash
    • Fast (few seconds tx)
    • Reliable
    • Consistently near zero tx fee
    • etc...

Maybe (somebody can likely come up with better...) use F0RC (if nothing else, just to make easier to remember-no pun intended)

    • Fast
    • Near 0 tx fees
    • Reliable
    • Cash

It may be more important to focus on the high-level simplicity/benefits of Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash!!! And only get into details as needed to answer more specific questions as/if/when they come up.... Let the prospect lead (by their questions) the conversation as to any/what level of tech details may be needed. And of course be ready to answer as appropriate. Answering tech questions may the easier discussion. If they dont (yet) believe in the WHY of Peer-to-Peer Cash then spending time on tech details is not likely to help much.

Once one can see the WHY... the Importance/Value/Benefits of Peer-to-Peer Cash they are likely IN!

Does anyone know where to find the signed message Mark Karpeles published after the Mt. Gox hack in 2011?

    Posted: 24 Mar 2018 04:43 PM PDT

He moved over 200k BTC, and published a message signed with the receiving address to prove Mt. Gox still had everyone's money (no one knew exactly how much BTC they had). The numbers match the amount in the cold wallet he "found" after the bankruptcy rather closely, and I have a suspicion that it may be the same. I'm asking because, assuming that cold wallet is the same one he found after banktruptcly, locating that signed message is the one way to locate the Mt. Gox coins with certainty, and iwthout having to trust the word of any 3rd parties.
