When you are trying to buy the dip

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 06:56 AM PST

Spent half a year buying dips to accumulate bitcoin. Just made my first purchase with it - a jar of onion chutney from a farmer's market. Still buying dips.

I tried the Bisq decentralized exchange

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 05:03 AM PST

I exchanged some Bitcoin back and forth on Bisq to learn if it's anywhere close to practical already.

I am mesmerized by the attention to details, usability and stability of the software.

Bisq is a desktop application you are supposed to run (potentially) 24/7 to trade Bitcoin in a p2p manner.

There is no registration and no central server to connect to. Your order is active only when you run the software.

With Bisq you can exchange BTC to a few most popular national currencies (USD, EUR) or altcoins w/o intermediaries.

There is a built-in arbitration process if 2nd party won't behave. Selected arbitrator holds 1 of 3 keys in a 2/3 multisig scheme. The scheme includes security deposits to incentivize following the deal.

You can put your orders in relation to the market exchange rate (say +1%).

There are not so many offers and it may take a few days to get a deal. Or you can select one of the existing offers to get the deal outright.

    My trades went through smoothly.

I highly recommend to give it a try if you value privacy and you are not in a hurry (and you shouldn't be with crypto trading): https://bisq.network/

We aren’t 16 either, but created a beautiful crypto tracking App which sends you automated alerts, news and shows you a toplist of all your crypto coins!

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 09:04 AM PST

    Hey crypto community,

We know that several people have recently launched projects similar to ours but still we want to take the chance to show what we have come up with for you over the last few weeks:

Our App is called Coinance and it is so far available on iOS (Android launch in 3-4 weeks). Since me and my friend Felix both invested a some money into different cryptocurrencies, we caught ourselves checking market prices several times a day. Though most crypto websites like for example Coinmarketcap are still a bit rudimentary to use in our opinion. Since both of us believe into design disruption, we started to build a product for crypto currencies, which hopefully people love using and therefore make crypto currencies more accessible to a wider audience.

In our first version we tried to focus just on the elementary features as a market tracking app, even though we share a bigger vision behind Coinance. We tried to "build a fully working skateboard first, before shooting for a flying car."

Our first and core features within the App are so far: The toplist sorted by market cap. The ability to favorite coins in a separate view e.g. your portfolio. An alert function, which sends you push notifications once the price hits a target price and also once certain parameters are hit in our backend, e.g. all-time-high. And finally a news section where we retrieve RSS feeds from news sites like .g. Coindesk, TechCrunch or Cointelegraph and share important Twitter news.

But where could this project go from here? We don't know it yet, but we are curious to hear what you think! We believe in user centric development and have a couple of ideas of but we would love to hear from you what you actually want us to build next! Our thoughts are:

The ability to create your own portfolio and manually track your investments? Similar like Delta or Blockfolio. Integration to several exchanges and retrieve their data about your current holdings into our App so that you could login and see your real portfolio. E.g. Mint for crypto More News channels and sources to keep users up-to-date about ICOs. Integrate an own wallet and becoming a possible future payment provider.

If you have an iOS device feel free to take a look at it yourself and let us know what you think. You can comment on here and we are trying to answer any questions / will take your feedback very seriously!

Some of you guys might also be interested in who we are:

Felix is an UI/UX designer & product manager currently still in his last semester of grad school. He designed the App, set the requirements and spoke with guys like you which features we should implement first.

Mathias is a software engineer who works for a startup in San Francisco. He coded the App, but since you guys are very precise who exactly wrote ALL the code, admits that he had to ask one or two times a friend when he didn't know it all himself. Booh! ;)

Note: This project is an evening & weekend project, since Mathias is working full-time and Felix has to finish up his study. We built this thing for you - the community. We could also decide to spend our time differently, therefore please don't be too harsh with your critique, but we really appreciate any feedback, suggestion or motivating words!

Edit: The link to the iOS App Store was posted below in the comments but I'll put it here too. I wasn't sure if I was allowed to post it so didn't put it here in the first place: Coinance in the AppStore

Lightning network still needs a lot of work

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 11:49 AM PST

Let's start with disclaimer: I'm a huge fan of LN. I've been wishing for something similar since ~2012 (unfortunately I didn't have money to buy :/ ). I'm also very cautious of increasing the block size limit because of the cost of nodes.

So recently, I decided to try out LN on testnet. I started looking around and found that there are three implementations of LN: lnd written in Go, Eclair written in Java and C-lightning written in C, obviously.

My first step was to choose which one of them is the best fit. The intention is to run it on main net one day, so I decided to choose same constraints I would have chosen if running on main net.

I looked at lnd and found out it requires btcd - re-implementation of Bicoin Core. This is something many devs frown upon, but I was thinking "maybe they use libbitcoin?" I didn't found any information on this, so I decided to not risk it. Anyway, that would mean installing another node on my existing 100€ server, which barely handles one node with Electrumx.

Eclair was immediately out of question because of memory requirements of Java.

C-lightning sounded dangerous. C is very bad language for writing security-critical software. "Why nobody wrote it in Rust?" was my first thought. I learned only recently that a Rust implementation exists - one that's too far from complete and looking at the code, it doesn't seem very idiomatic...

So C-lightning was also out of question.

Or not. I was thinking "maybe they have great test suite. After all, Bitcoin Core is in C++ (just as terrible as C) and it works". That's probably the only choice for such a cheap node I have anyway.

So I cloned it and compiled. This was surprisingly easy. No messing with ./configure, compiled pretty fast. I proceeded as instructions said and connected it to freshly-synchronized bitcoind. It seemed to work, so I opened a connections to two random nodes and created channels.

Then I was thinking that sending funds is boring, receiving is better. I quickly found out that those nodes I connected to put 0 satoshis into the channel, so they wouldn't be able to receive my payment.

So I tried to connect directly to the node with my phone using Eclair. It failed. I seemed to be out of luck.

Then I realized, I could receive money if I send first. Donating would be pointless, so I decided to simply buy an article from Yalls using my node. It turned out Yalls had screwed configuration, so I couldn't send them any payment. I tried to buy virtual coffee and the routing was giving "too expensive" error even for 5% fees.

During this testing, I hit few Segfault bugs - those are bugs that can also be serious security vulnerabilities and their presence demonstrated that C-lightning is doing well exactly what a typical C program is good at: crashing.

So I gave up for now. As you can see, there's a long way to go, so don't get over-hyped. And certainly do not put a big amount of money into LN!.

I hope this will change some day. It seems to be solvable, it just needs time.

TL;DR: Tried LN, it has lot of problems, had to give up. But I still believe in it's future.

    Confused about full nodes

    Posted: 03 Mar 2018 02:27 PM PST

What if the first node I connect to when starting up mine for the first time is compromised in some way. Then I start downloading the blockchain from him and I am never on the real Bitcoin network. How is this prevented from happening? How would I know that this has happend? I am considering switching to Bitcoin Core from Electrum and this though came to me.
