ETHDenver Takeaways - My Experience & The Bright Future of the Community Posted: 18 Feb 2018 07:34 PM PST Want to say that this was an incredible event - and it's only scratching the surface of what's to come. I wanted to do a deep dive into my overall experience, the venue, the panel discussions, community members, and founders. The Venue The Sports Castle has the outside aesthetic of 1800s castle while turning the inside into a tech lovers dream. It was 5 floors, tons of staff and imo - very well organized. Volunteer staff was everywhere and looked to be a constant help. Wifi went down at times, but honestly, there were over 1300 people using multiple devices at any time. The bean bags were a great seating option and you could always find a place to sit. As far as events in this space go - ETHDenver is a great pillar in the meetup community and will be for a long time. Panel Discussions & Founders There were over 50 workshops, covering almost all aspects. You could walk up to any founder and speak to them without feeling any pressure. It was encouraged that founders go speak to hackathon competitors - which I loved! I spoke with multiple founders, all who wanted to give value and genuinely listen. Two rooms hosted panel discussions, all of which offered great insight and knowledge. It was almost TO MUCH to take in, but somehow I think everyone made it work. Talks also centered around developers and getting projects built. They wanted to help everyone learn as much as possible, and no matter the skill level, to #BUIDL Community Members Wow... what can I say other than I met some really cool people - hackers, cryptographers, devs, designers, computer science majors, etc... all who wanted to involve themselves in the community. Every conversation held value and the multi-level communication is something you don't see in any space except this. While the meetup is going on, there are people talking via Slack, Airtables being shared for resources and ideas, pub nights, and more. Overall, I see ETHDenver as a pillar in the community and space. Sponsors did a great job, Rhys & John are gems and hope to see more of you both in the future. I highly advise, if possible of course, that you all make it out to Denver and to ETHDenver. Thanks for reading - glad to see authentic growth both online and IRL. [link] [comments]

Posted: 18 Feb 2018 05:54 PM PST Dear Community, I've been a loyal follower for the past two years (which have been incredibly exiting) and finally have the chance to contribute some research / resources towards blockchain technology under superbision of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). I am studying Applied Computer Science (6th semester) and am looking for an interesting topic to write my Bachleor Thesis about, which will last from June to September. According to the university, the task may be of an experimental, theoretical or constructive nature or may consist of any combination of these. I already reached out to Consensys, the EEA and Foundation, but here are some fields of interest of mine:
I would really appreciate additional or more precise topics/areas of research/ideas/material. Thanks! [link] [comments]

I got a new SSD and lost my Jaxx account Posted: 18 Feb 2018 11:29 AM PST I reset my PC so my main hard drive was my SSD, and I forgot to save my backup phrase. I still have the old hard drive and I'm using it as a backup, but I don't know how to recover my account. Is there anything I can do to get this back? Or did I just screw myself over? What to do if nobody is interested in your ICO but you still think the idea should be built? Posted: 18 Feb 2018 12:18 PM PST I am posting in /r/ethereum because this place seems more open to discussing intellectual things rather than other subs that care more about hype and speculation. It seems that most projects sell their tokens before the product/service is actually finished. Then ostensibly they will use the funds to build the product/service. But what if nobody is interested in the ICO, or you are bad at advertising/sales/persuasion? If you think your idea is fantastic and you are interested in building it anyway without initial funding, how do you structure your token for future use? I am working on a project that I think is really valuable even if I can't seem to gather support around it. Instead of just letting it die, I would like to build an implementation of it and maybe that will help convince people that it is a good idea. So my question is, how do I create the token to allow for distributing later when people are convinced that the project is awesome? Do I create the token now, assign myself all of the tokens, then sell them to people later? Do I just hold off on the token creation until a later date and then do the ICO? Do I airdrop tokens up front? What do you people think is the best course of action? I'd hate to make something cool, and then people see that it is "pre-mined" and think it is a scam or something. I won't shill the project here (you could easily find it in my post history if you care, but it is not relevant to this post). [link] [comments]
Thoughts of Proof of Authority? Posted: 18 Feb 2018 12:39 AM PST Hi guys, Recently, I have come across a project claiming that the solution to Ethereum's low txn/sec problem is proof of authority with forced decantralization. Reading a bit about PoA, it sounds pretty interesting but I do not understand the whole picture (as I am not that good with technical stuff). I am wondering what do people think about this? Has this solution been discussed here before? Doing a quick research there was a post 11 months ago about this and some work on it here (https://github.com/ethereum/EIPs/issues/225) The project in question is (www.gochain.io). Would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this? thanks [link] [comments]
How does ethereum compare to Nebulas? Posted: 18 Feb 2018 12:20 PM PST Ethereum is the Godfather of all blockchains but we need to also be aware of other potential competitions. Nebulas are made of Ex Neo founders. Their project allows users to search other blockhains which is an advantage over ethereum and also it has a new consensus algorithm rank where it enables the prioritisation of the so called 'better dapps' on the system. This would certainly increase adoption of the development of applications. I believe in both projects but how would you guys compare the two? Tech only. [link] [comments]
Simulating the role of the fractional reserve Posted: 17 Feb 2018 11:19 PM PST I may have missed a coin doing just this (in which case I'd like to hear about it), but if there's none, I think we might want to make sure such service comes to life in Ethereum first. But not exactly fractional reserve, just the role it has on the economy. Consider this: you want to buy a product that is valued by the market for a given price, but you don't have the money to buy it right now. Anyone can become your lender, pay it for you and lend it to you until you have paid it in full. But they can go even further: as long as the product can keep its value in the market and have at least one other buyer, there's no risk in putting the product in a sort of mortgage. As such, the lender, once the product is bought and lended to the borrower, can consider he still has his money, because it is secured by the value of the product itself. So, what are doing the fractional reserve? It gives the ability to the banks to lend money they don't own, because they have a fraction of that money and because most of the money that is lended will be repaid, as long as the risks of such lends are well distributed. The thing is such simple model creates problems when most of the assets are linked together: if most products of the same type are in such system, you can have a situation where most of these products failed to be paid and are sold in the market at the same time to repay the debt. Doing this lowers the value of the products, thus breaking the initial hypothesis of the given value and increasing the risk for all other debts for the same products. So, in short, fractional reserve in itself is quite imperfect. Actually, there's even no need for a given fraction: as long as you can buy in full the product, you can mortgage it and get your money back. What is important is to keep an eye on all the mortgages for the products of the same type. At this point, there's only two risks that need to be covered by the lender: the risk of the currency increasing its value compared to the product, thus decreasing the value of the product in the lended currency; the risk of the product changing its value because of technological improvements enabling a lower cost of production. But all these risks can be assessed and provisioned through an insurance and are the actual cost of the lending service. Anything else allowed by fractional reserve is arbitrary. So, if we could tokenize products in this way and let people register mortgages with a smart contract insurance (some sort of third party paying, during the auction of the product once it's failed being repaid, for the discrepancy between what's borrowed and what's paid by the new buyer) to get their money back as soon as it is bought, it would give a major boost to the economy and be a practical use case. What do you think? [link] [comments]
Limit to number of token on an Ethereum address? Posted: 18 Feb 2018 10:38 AM PST I'm curious if there is a limit to the number of distinct tokens a single Ethereum address can hold. Other than the risk of losing your private key, is there any other risk to having all (10+ tokens) on one address? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Is there a way to delay send some eth? Posted: 18 Feb 2018 06:24 AM PST I want to send eth at a certain time (for an ICO) but know I won't have internet then, due to travelling. Is there a way to delay a send for a specific time? [link] [comments] |
