Blockchain games as technology showcase? Good or Evil for Ethereum?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 07:46 AM PST

The strong point of blockchain is trust and public control, and therefore the strength of Ethereum smart contracts is that they can be applied in areas where strong trust is necessary: voting, trading, and so on. This definitely should work, but is not getting a lot of traction at least so far, especially for the general public.

Then there are games. On the one hand, games does not equal gambling. On the other hand, since blockchain allows convenient transfer of value, and any transaction has a cost, blockchain games that don't involve transfer of value just make no sense. Why do people play CryptoKitties? Because they like playing breeding cats and paying for that? Hell no, that's because they want to get an expensive cat and likely sell it. Playing for money? That's the definition of gambling. Investment gaming? Investment gambling? But that was what got people to use Ethereum more, it got MetaMask more popular, that's a real application and that's generally good. So is it Good or Evil at the bottom line?

Here's another example I ran into: etherjack.io. They made an intricate penny auction on Ethereum. Looks like a casino, but if you read the rules, it's actually a trustless penny auction. They are collecting ether for the prize fund, and are going to launch as soon as it's collected. Gambling? Kind of, like everything else.

They used blockchain to solve the problem of non-transparent and rigged penny auctions. I'm sure when they finally get that prize collected and actually start the game they will make some hype and attract new people to use Ethereum and actually perform some transactions and see how it works. Good or Evil?

Projects like this highlight the power of smart contract: when coded right, people can trust value to a piece of software, and be sure it delivers on the promise, and nothing can be rigged. This never was the case in real life where it's easy to use power and influence to obscure anything no matter how big it is. On the blockchain it's the opposite, every small detail is public.

Is games (involving playing for value) what will make Ethereum mainstream (Good)? Or will all those projects create a bad public image to it (Evil)?

I created a smart contract for Fermat's last theorem VOL 2

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 07:25 AM PST

The first one got drained. For the sake of my own mental health, I decided to roll a new one.

    I created a smart contract that has the logic for Fermat's last theorem: an + bn = cn where n > 2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermat%27s_Last_Theorem https://etherscan.io/address/0x21b7637f29e2476c3d540219d8ab8b85b114c2b1

I also added a small bounty for anyone to claim if you can provide a solution. This should however not be possible since it was proven that there exists no solution. There could however be a bug in the contract since it's audited only by me.

The motivation is mainly to explore new use cases for the public Ethereum blockchain and any feedback is welcome :)

    Staking questions

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 11:26 AM PST

Hi, I have a few questions about staking with the next release of Ethereum.

Suppose I have a fast home connection with dynamic IP.

If solo staking, how do I prevent being DDOSed to death? Or that someone figures out my home address using my IP and a bit of social hacking with my provider, and subsequently breaks into my home and steals my server?

If pool staking, how do I prevent the pool from exit scamming & disappearing with my staked ETH?

    solidity

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 04:28 AM PST

ok lads, ethereum supporter and hodler and whatever have you here, and i love the concept behind it all, but when i got down to actually trying out solidity (and i have some background in python/*nix/shell... yeah, not a full-blown dev or anything, but enough to get it, i daresay) -- now, i went through this:

    "Introducing-Ethereum-and-Solidity-Foundations-of-Cryptocurrency-and-Blockchain-Programming-for-Beginners"

then i went through the official documentation, then i went through some online 'courses' (half of which was reiteration of the same and waste of my time tbh), and then the community chat and i still can't get a simple answer to simple questions like HOW THE FUCK DO I REFER TO ANOTHER CONTRACT OR AN ORACLE?!... best answer i get, which makes me want to slam my laptop in the table by now and start breaking shit is what do i mean - THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I MEAN.

so, anybody, please - downvote me into damnation if you will, but give me a straight answer before that...

solidity seems like a horrible fucking mess, i can see it gets shit done, but apparently its a very handful of few that get it. incredibly counterintuitive to me. and what's with coming up with something more python (i.e. human) like? has that dropped out from the plan already?

    Ethereum/Mist v9.2 & 9.3 Sync issues

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 11:25 AM PST

    Hi All,

For the last few weeks I have tried time and time again to sync my wallets with either version and no luck. I've tried with both my desktop (Corei5, 256GB SSD, 16GB) and laptop freshly formatted with Win7 (Corei7, 512GB SSD, 8GB) with both the Light client and normal sync. Light Client doesn't even budge anymore and the normal sync will start off strong and get progressively slower -- or just stop completely until I close/reopen the wallet. Anyone have a golden bullet for this?

Is Real Life Research possible with Ethereum / other crypto possible ?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 03:35 AM PST

If we go past the price, lambos and moon discussions, I wonder if this is possible to do with either Ethereum or another cryprocurrency:

    • Real life research that uses computer power to solve problems and would give a token in exchange ( just like PoW mining ), but it will also have real life utility and be stored on a blockchain

    • Real life research that uses human mind to solve puzzles. Raiblocks (NANO)used to ask people to solve captchas and it became a worthy currency. I'm talking about projects like Eve Online had/have: Project Discovery: Human Protein Atlas and Project Discovery: https://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Project_Discovery So basically this would be a mix of what Raiblocks and Eve did and would reward a cryptocurrency for solving the puzzle. Once again, this should have real life application, not just be an useless captcha puzzle and the results should be stored on a blockchain.

Why would anyone want this and why would it be a good idea ?

    • Pretty much every important discovery made by a lab / university / centralised organisation is kept under secret for quite a while, until they decide to monetize it ( for huge amounts of money that the users/citizens are paying). Storing it on a blockchain would solve the secrecy problem
    • Speed up innovation: there are never enough researchers, as it takes dozens of years to become a top one. If this job could be converted into puzzles that an average IQ person could solve and earn crypto at the same time, it would be the equivalent of hiring hundreads/thousands of new researchers
    • Domains like medicine, biology, physics, space exploration would always be in need of a such system, so the "puzzles" would never run out, once a previous problem is solved.

Do you think this would be possible within the crypto world ? It would deffinitely put crypto into a much better light and also help the mankind as well in the process. Vitalik Buterin posted a series of tweets in December 2017 about the amount of problems solved by crypto and the final answer/conclusion was "not enough" (which was and still is correct)

be careful with Ledger Chrome app for ETH during the time they have stability issues - transactions get broadcasted with delays of couple of hours...

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 08:48 AM PST

don't use the ledger chrome app for now to send money as you might have the same issue that I had: i tried sending eth via ledgers chrome app last night, i confirmed the transaction with the ledger but the funds did not move from the wallet, it did not appear on the blockchain(let's call this transaction X).. a few hours later i made a transfer of eth from an exchange to ledger wallet and 2 minutes from there my ledger automatically broadcasted the earlier transaction X without me doing anything..BIG unexpected surprise..the transaction X got broadcasted on the network with about 12 h delay..i almost got fucked big time by this as that was a sale transaction towards an exchange...basically if you made a send transaction via chrome app, you confirm it and the funds don't leave your wallet, you might have this bad surprise that the transaction gets broadcasted at a later moment, who knows when..to be sure this does not happen again i generated a new seed on ledger and moved the funds to this new wallet, using myetherwallet..

Need some good podcasts to listen to in my spare time, what are some of your favourites?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 01:58 AM PST

Hey, I was wondering if there are any good/informative (with little bias) podcasts to listen to in my spare time. Podcasts can range from topics such as blockchain technology, Ethereum, or even the crypto space in general. It doesn't matter which platform to listen on but iTunes, Soundcloud, Youtube, etc. are preferable! Thanks fellas!

CHSB tokens from exchange to METAMASK

    Posted: 06 Feb 2018 05:56 PM PST

im seeking some advice on where i may successfully obtain CHSB, and subsequently withdraw from exchange to a METAMASK.

can anyone shed some light on how i may do this with limited exposure to 3rd party failure (exchange failure)

i came to the ether community for this, as it is an ERC-20 token/smart contract, and im hoping that there may be some members who have done this already.

Mist can't add backed up account

I've tried to restore an account from an old version of Mist, but it doesn't seem to work. When I click Add Account I can see my backed up account, but when I click Authorize it closes the dialogue and doesn't do anything. Has anyone had a similar problem or have any insight?
