One of GPUS 0.00 using Ubuntu and Asus B250 X Boards

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 08:13 AM PST

I have two rigs running nicely on Windows, but when switching to unbuntu, one of the cards seems to go to 0.00 or half the hash rate. I have a 4 rig set up, that is running on a older Asus mobo (3-4 years old) running linux, like a champ. All cards there, no issue. Last night I went to move the GPUs/HD/PSU to a newer Asus B250 Expedition board so I could expand to 6 slots. After firing up Claymore, only 3 cards has at normal, 4th is at 0.00. I changed risers, etc, and got it to 16mh/s (mining ETH).

From there, I reinstalled the drivers, updated OS, expanded swap space basically everything I could think of. I switch back to the older motherboard, and all 4 cards hash like normal (28-29).

I tried turning off the Mining option in the bios, no luck.

    Anyone have any solutions?

My first 5x GTX 1060 6GB Mining Rig. I did the frame, the wiring and everything... Around 4 days of work. Learnt a lot by building it. I might add another 1060 if the 850w PSU can handle it. Hope you like it!

Does anyone here run a small mining farm and has an insurance policy? Which one are you using?

I signed up with Hiscox small business policy but after two days, they cancelled the policy saying ..."We dont cover BITCOIN". I was like wtf that even means. Anyway!

    Safety doesn't stop at SATA...

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 08:43 AM PST

So with all of the regular reminders on this sub to avoid using SATA-to-6 pin connectors for any of your Riser-power needs, I thought it was important to share my Molex-related close call with all of you.

I check on my rig a couple of times a day to make sure everything is running smoothly. Yesterday when I checked in around lunch I noticed that one of my Strix 1080tis was running much hotter than usual (~45c topical, temp was above 65c). I run my cards at 75% TDP with a very modest overclock.

Upon noticing this abnormality, I adjusted that card's overclock to zero and reduced TDP further down to 65%. Temperatures ended up changing minimally. When I got home around 9:30 first thing I did was go downstairs for some detective work to figure out why the card was such an outlier. When I moved my hand around the rig I felt a huge amount of heat emanating from one of the double Molex to 6-pin adapters I had used to power my riser. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the insulation at each end of the terminals of the adapter had completely burned off and it looked like it may have been due to bad crimping during manufacturing. The rig had been running for at least 2 months in this configuration and it wasn't until yesterday that I noticed this.

The Molex adapters in question where some cheap cheaper ones found on Amazon (by no means the cheapest, and had A LOT of positive reviews) that had been produced in China. At the time I considered myself "safe" because I elected to use Molex connectors in lieu of SATA connectors, so i wanted to remind the community to not allow yourselves to fall prey to such assumptions.

If I hadn't caught this I have no idea how long it would it taken for this to progress into a fire, I could have lost my entire home and my fuzzy family members inside.

Please please PLEASE make sure that you are regularly auditing your rigs, even if you believe that everything "should be" okay. I was under the impression that everything was okay in my setup because i avoided the big bad SATA, but I just got really really lucky.

Below are a couple of pictures of the adapter, when I get home tonight I will see if I can track down the Amazon vendor and update this post.

Be safe out there and never just assume that everything will be ok because you avoided SATA.

Seasonic says molex is NOT for risers?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 08:14 AM PST

I sent an email to Seasonic asking about ordering another PCIE and molex cable, but in the email they specifically state this.

"Note that Molex/SATA cables are only made to power peripherals (SSD/HDD, fans, reader, soundcard) and this does not include risers for GPU."

Are they talking about SATA to molex adapters, or molex in general? Is it actually unsafe to use molex for risers?

    First mining rig - 12x 1050ti's

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 10:45 AM PST

[casual discussion] Sorta free mining rig, but not sure if I should accept. Thoughts?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2018 09:28 PM PST

I have a rig I've been running for a month now. 6 x 1080 Ti. I was talking to my dad the other day and expressed how I wished I could have had the money to build two rigs at the time I was putting it all together. Today, he texts me saying if I want to build another that he'll fund it. Only stipulation is I pay him back his investment and then the future mining profits are all mine. Sounds great, right? But I'm super nervous to accept that given the rapidly shrinking payouts. What would you all do?

People who live in a condo - looking for tips for when they enter my place and find two mining rigs set-up.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 06:49 AM PST

Anyone here living in a condo with miners? I know they are not illegal, but my power bill is definitely going up - I do pay a flat rate currently, but I do not know if they monitor each unit individually for power usage. I'm hoping it will blend in with the entire buildings power usage and they won't notice.

Sometimes they have to enter my condo (yes they give notice) to check the fire system etc. I am wondering if I need to bother with hiding the miners, or at least turning them off or something. Has anyone dealt with something similar?
