Correcting r/bitcoin's misinformation: I just fully verified the entire ethereum blockchain on a 2+ years old desktop and it only took 25 hours (full log included)

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 03:21 PM PST

In a recent r/bitcoin's thread /u/thieflar claims that with 'a very nice machine' he was unable to finish validation of the ethereum blockchain and that the near impossibility of it is apparently an accepted fact even among ethereum's developers:

The developers of Ethereum know that this is an issue, they are fully aware that their network relies on trust at this point, and they don't even try to deny it.

    /u/nullc comments with:

without being able to count on nodes verifying the history even ethereum seems unable to make a proposal complex enough to hide its insecurity.

I tested the truth of these statements - the result: full block-per-block syncing completed in 25 hours 25 minutes.

    Software:
Parity at commit 2586eaef929cadcd5ebccdf2d484f1cf6bb14917, compiled with "target-cpu=native", performance options: --tracing off --cache-size 4096
    Ubuntu 16.04

    Hardware:
i7-6700K, 16GB ram, Samsung 850 EVO 256GB. Not bad but definitely not 'very nice' either.

To remove the network speed from the performance equation I downloaded the bare blockchain separately and synced the node from disk. As it's only 20GB at the moment there would be no noticeable difference.
23k most recent blocks were downloaded after that.

The fully synced node with all historical blocks + recent state (ie. exactly like a full bitcoin node) uses 44.3GB.

    Parity log.

    Syncing from disk:
    2017-12-30 20:15:50 Import completed in 87903 seconds, 4803128 blocks, 54 blk/s, 112578528 transactions, 1280 tx/s, 5273835 Mgas, 59 Mgas/s

    Downloading the tip:
    2017-12-30 20:33:53 Syncing #4803139 d21c…7352 0 blk/s 115 tx/s 5 Mgas/s 0+ 19 Qed #4803162 5/25 peers 365 KiB chain 72 MiB db 2 MiB queue 898 KiB sync RPC: 0 conn, 0 req/s, 0 µs
    ...
    2017-12-30 21:33:43 Syncing #4825928 b3cb…6ec9 4 blk/s 720 tx/s 29 Mgas/s 0+ 15 Qed #4825945 7/25 peers 305 MiB chain 609 MiB db 3 MiB queue 3 MiB sync RPC: 0 conn, 0 req/s, 0 µs

Conclusion: any pc that can run a modern game can easily fully sync (no state snapshot downloading, only blocks) and run a full ethereum node.

edit: apparently reddit immediately deletes posts with links to mega

    Economics of staking?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 12:21 PM PST

I have some basic questions around the economics of staking:

    1) what will be the minimum amount of ETH required?

    2) what is the annualized return (in ETH) likely to be per ETH locked in a staking contract?

    3) what is the minimum amount of time that ETH can be locked in a staking contract?

    4) assuming the staker does his/her very best to behave honestly, what is the probability of loss of any of the staking amount?

    5) are there any guesses on the total amount of ETH that will be locked in staking contracts?

    Thanks for any answers!

Are Dapps like Cryptokitties or EtherTanks that produce lots of transactions good or bad for the network?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 06:15 AM PST

When Cryptokitties first came out it filled up the network with loads of transactions. Now it seems like ethertanks is kicking off and as far as I can tell a similar thing is happening. Obvious neither of these Dapps offer any real value besides a bit of fun and gambling (and that guy that made tons of cash on trading kitties) but is the increase in transactions good for the network? If these Dapps don't attract any new people to use ETH does the increase in mining fees that all the transactions are paying lead to the network running better or increase the value of ETH at all?

Sorry if terribly worded, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the technical details of how the network works.

Reminder: no Tokens reside in your Ethereum account, they all reside inside their token contract and depending on the contract source, can be moved without your action.

    Experimentation using geth

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 07:11 PM PST

Hey all, I'm looking for some ideas for experimenting on a testnet for a high school project. Open to any suggestions because I can't think of any ideas/pretty new to dApp development. I do have to write a report on it so the more complicated the better 👍

    Truffle Dapp Confusion

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 05:23 PM PST

Hi, I know this does not directly relate to most of the normal topics of this sub but I didn't know where else to post it and thought you guys would be able to help a newbie like me. Recently I have been trying to tutorial on how to get started with creating a dapp. I found a tutorial through truffle, and I found it be great, all the way up to the end. When editing the bs-config.json file I was confused on what I was supposed to edit and what I was supposed to leave, and then when I tried launching lite-server I have continued to get issues regarding this. Sorry if this if these are silly questions, and here is the link to the Truffle tutorial. http://truffleframework.com/tutorials/pet-shop Thanks everyone!

Can someone offer some help: I want to send tokens out of MEW with my ledger, it says i need 200,000 gas. How much ETH does that equal?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 11:05 AM PST

Is there any conversion factor between gas and ETH? Or do you just have to guess how much your fees will be. Sorry if this is a noob question, I've been holding ETH since may but i only used my ledger, only started using MEW recently because of tokens. Thanks guys i really appreciate it.

I hold only a small amount of Ethereum, should I be looking forward to PoS?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 03:59 PM PST

Like the title said, I only hold a very tiny amount of Ethereum compared to a lot of people who got in early when it was around 1$. So here's my question. Is it even worth it for me to hold Ethereum until PoS because I read on the subreddit people say the minimum staking required is something of like 1000 ETH. No way I have even 1/10 of that even if I try. Should I just move to other project like Ark because its still cheap?

    Collision among private keys

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 05:50 AM PST

Can someone explain on how I can generate an Ethereum address offline and still not run into a case of private key collision? How does this work? I don't understand how ECDSA works. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Wallet fully synced and 3 days wait, still nothing showing in wallet. Any Help?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 09:45 AM PST

As the title says my wallet is synced and I've waited 3 days and nothing. I even made the wallet sync right from the being and it didn't do anything. Luckily this was just a small test transaction to make sure everything was working and it seems something is wrong. I can't make a new wallet address since this is the wallet address I've used on my Nanopool miner so I'd really like to get this one fixed.

Will GPU mining still be a thing in 2018 or are there any changes?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 02:50 PM PST

    Is mining becoming less "efficient"?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 11:08 AM PST

I have been mining with a single GPU for about 6 weeks, and fairly consistently hit the same number of ETH / week until the last 3 weeks. I am aware of the payout change in December, but it seems like my weekly payout is dropping. Hashrate has stayed constant and there has been basically no down time.

It has gone .048, .0418, .0384 the last 3 weeks. Is this a natural thing to have happen on the network as more people join the mining pool?

Sent my funds from Coinbase to Exodus wallet, transaction has over 200 confirmations but no funds show up on Exodus?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2017 09:09 AM PST

Hello, sorry i do not know if this is a stupid question or if I'm just getting too worried too quick, I bought some ethereum from coinbase and downloaded the Exodus wallet to keep it in there for short term, i found my ether address and sent it there from Coinbase. I made sure the addresses match and i sent about 0.5 ether about 30 minutes ago. The transaction now has over 200 confirmations but it is not popping up in my wallet, even after refreshing it. Is there anything wrong i did or do i just need to wait longer or do i contact someone?

    Thanks

What are some of the best Ethereum resources?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2017 10:03 PM PST

I'm putting together a syllabus with resources for learning about Ethereum, in collaboration with Redditor who made this popular post.

Any resources will do, but preferably resources regarding:

    • Smart Contracts
    • Development
    • Ethereum vs Ether
    • Decentralization
    • Ethereum Tokens
    • etc, etc, etc

Hoping this can be a great heap of information for the community, would love your input!
