BitPay confirms working on SegWit and development on the Lightning Network!

    Posted: 16 Dec 2017 03:24 AM PST

BitPay confirms working on SegWit and development on the Lightning Network!

We will continue to build on the Bitcoin blockchain without interruption. We're examining every option we can use to allow Bitcoin users to continue to affordably and reliably pay for the things they need, including the current development efforts on the Lightning Network.

We are already working in various parts of our platform to support transactions with SegWit. Segwit is a new set of features in Bitcoin which can reduce the bitcoin miner fee cost for transactions by over 40% on average. However, with average transaction fees already around $20, we understand that Bitcoin alone cannot handle the current demand for blockchain payments.

Coinfloor GBP prices 8% lower than elsewhere

    Posted: 16 Dec 2017 06:27 AM PST

Coinfloor GBP as I post is £13,000, whilst coinbase USD is $18,600 which is nearly £14,000. Normally these would be within 1%. Any idea what's going on?

Sent a very large wire in on Dec 8, nothing showing up in my account and now no one is responding to my support requests. Are they even trustworthy?

Having a tough time wrapping my head around trading one crypto against another crypto instead of USD

    Posted: 15 Dec 2017 09:51 PM PST

I am looking to get into trading for fun. GDAX verification is trashed, Bitstamp's is delayed, Kraken gives 520 error every 60 seconds, Gemini only trades BTC and ETH, Bitfinex isn't allowing new signups, Bittrex kicked out US users...

which leaves me basically with Binance, who will apparently let me trade small volumes before verification. However Binance does not have a USD Wallet like Coinbase/GDAX.

How do you effectively trade say Litecoin against Bitcoin when Bitcoin itself isn't stable? Isn't it difficult to gauge your % change when the currency you're increasing is changing by 10% over the course of a day too? How do you wrap your head around it?

    Collateralization/Securitization via Crypto

    Posted: 16 Dec 2017 08:33 AM PST

    Finance student here,

Would it be possible to use bitcoin [or other cryptos] to collateralize/securitize a product? I feel like volatility would kind of erode the confidence in a bitcoin or crypto-backed asset, but I'm curious as to what you all think. If you used multiple cryptos in a tranche-esque construction, could you limit volatility that way? Edit - I'm thinking about this in a MBS sort of way. I feel like there are some parallels here and am curious as to what you guys think. Thanks.

Are Bittrex, Kraken, Bitfinex, Binance, Poloniex and Coinbase accessible from within the Ukraine, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria for travellers who already possess an account?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2017 04:28 AM PST

I plan to travel for a maybe longer time (digital nomad style). Wanna be prepared for worst case, mentioned countries might be my first stops. So wondering now if there are some geo location restrictions concerning the mentioned exchanges. Furthermore I'm wondering if there are, would it be possible to avoid them using a VPN? Or would you be endangered if the exchanges are finding out that you are using a VPN that your account will be locked?

Also interesting: if you don't have a fix address (e.g. because you are living in a hotel for some time or have no letterbox), could this lead to problems with accounts on the mentioned exchanges?

    Thanks!

Why in every bull run there are huge 3K spikes in volume? Are these simple market orders?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2017 02:10 AM PST

If it's one buyer buying a huge amount then why isn't he buying it in small sums every time to not cause a run?

Christmas Profit Taking or Christmas Investing, what do you think the Majority of people will do?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2017 03:54 AM PST

I have some long term holdings yet i also attempt to trade here and there. I'm looking to trade to increase my BTC holding over the next 2 weeks yet i can't decide which line to take. Will there be a sell off because the majority want to withdraw to take profits for Xmas shopping OR Will there be price spikes over the board as the majority choose to increase their stakes

    Would love peoples opinions.

CFTC: Kraken's Margin Loophole is Illegal

    Posted: 15 Dec 2017 01:19 PM PST

CFTC released new bitcoin guidance today: http://www.cftc.gov/PressRoom/PressReleases/pr7664-17

The guidance specifically addresses the 28-day loophole that Kraken is using to provide margin trading to US customers (https://support.kraken.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001266568-US-Margin-Financing-Term-Limit).

TL;DR: Unless Kraken actually gives you the coins after 28 days (which they do not) and allows you to move them off the platform, they can't offer margin trading to US customers.

Note that this is a "Proposed Interpretation" and so there's a 90-day comment period.

    Edit: Actual interpretation at http://www.cftc.gov/idc/groups/public/@newsroom/documents/file/federalregister121517.pdf

    From example 4:

"Example 4: Actual delivery will not have occurred if, within 28 days of entering into a transaction, the agreement, contract, or transaction for the purchase or sale of virtual currency is rolled, offset against, netted out, or settled in cash or virtual currency (other than the purchased virtual currency) between the purchaser and the offeror or counterparty seller (or persons acting in concert with the offeror or counterparty seller)."

Edit 2: "Separately, an entity soliciting or accepting orders for retail commodity transactions and accepting money, securities, or property (or extending credit in lieu thereof) to margin, guarantee, or secure such transactions must register with the Commission as a futures commission merchant ("FCM")."

Kraken is definitely not registered as an FCM.

Country and/or geo location access restrictions for exchanges?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2017 07:47 PM PST

I'm planning to travel for a while, maybe for a long time. Now wondering if my exchanges will be accessible from everywhere, so from every country. Or are there some geo location restrictions for exchanges? And if yes, how about using a VPN server. Will that work? Or could maybe an exchange find out that you're logging in through a VPN and then will maybe lock your account?

I'm especially interested in knowing for the following exchanges:

Bittrex Kraken Bitfinex Binance Poloniex Coinbase

    Thanks!

EDIT: Made my post more concrete for the countries Ukraine, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria here: https://www.reddit.com/r/BitcoinMarkets/comments/7k6rh7/are_bittrex_kraken_bitfinex_binance_poloniex_and/?st=JB9BK8D8&sh=8ce2d183

So, I'm new to swaps trading.. but am I correct in seeing that the per tick P/L on a swaps trade goes down as the price of the instrument rises? And is this due to the contract not being linear?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2017 04:06 PM PST

I'm running some models on the XBT/USD on the Bitmex exchange just for shits n giggles at the moment. The product seems really interesting and really really liquid... which is attractive. But Ive ran some profit calculations and it seems that the higher XBT gets the lower the price per tick gets. Am I just an idiot or is that correct?
