PSA: For New Entrants - you have to see the "bubble" graph

    Posted: 04 Dec 2017 02:21 AM PST

Hi, when I started out, this graph was essential {EDIT better link}. It saved me a fortune. Some people here say that we're not in a bubble. That's because they are delusional... just like the graph says they would be.

At the bottom, last time, $150, I was in despair (and that was my second bubble!) It was only some coindesk article that stopped me just binning all my coins at a huge loss.

The market runs on emotions, and those emotions are very real.

You are in a bubble. This may or may not be the top. The top could be anywhere (yes 20-50-100k), but there will be a top, and it will pop.

There is nothing wrong with a bubble, it's fine. It's markets... it's awesome. You just might have to wait a long time before you get the value of your investment back. Or... you might never. Know that, and work with it.

I always link to my ancient article: top newbie tip, don't trade. And in there it says, people are going to give advice that suits their position. Now i'm really not trying to pop the bubble, I'm posting this to help people out, because I hear a lot of people here who are clearly (to my mind) going to lose a lot of money. Bitcoin is great. It's a fascinating subject. Markets are fascinating. That does not mean that you need to lose your car over them.

    Do these:
Never invest more than you can afford to lose entirely.
    Buy and hold.
Sell a third two years after each halving.

This post is for NEW investors only, not the experienced.

Whilst i've got the microphone: the people on this sub up-vote bullish (price increaes) messages and downvote bearish ones. This distorts the tone on the sub. The $50k coins by christmas!! thing is a minority view, yet is more prominant here than it should be. A recent bearish post I put on here was downvoted so quickly it would have only been visible on the sub for minutes. That's not a healthy un-biased discussion-space. That's not a complaint, I just want new people to know this place is biased.

    [Exchange Issues Megathread] - Kraken

    Posted: 04 Dec 2017 06:50 AM PST

This is a megathread to post your issues about exchanges. This sub is one of few places where traders can get community warnings about exchange issues--withdrawals suddenly not happening, trade engine issues, etc. We welcome reasonably-toned posts to that end. Keep things objective and state your experience with as many details as possible.

You should take any statements or assertions here about positive or negative experiences with a grain of salt. There have been plenty of shill and smear campaigns for or against many exchanges.

This is not a thread for user-specific support issues, which should be pursued w/ the respective exchanges ticket/help systems.

Take care to not post any personally identifiable information (your account name, etc).

We have started creating megathreads for specific exchanges to consolidate the rash of complaint threads popping up. These are certainly not all exchanges, nor should this indicate exchanges that are particularly problematic. At this point, it's just a list of some of the most popular ones.

Or will we break through the hyper-bitcoinization threshold and reverse gravity, propelling us upward - not back downward?

Discussion of Bitcoin arbitrage due to the impending futures market.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2017 09:30 PM PST

To arbitrage a futures contract successfully you generally need to exit your position at very close to the same price as the futures contract settlement price. Due to the highly volatile nature of the bitcoin market, it may be difficult to buy and/or sell bitcoins at the exact price at which the futures contract is settled. Arbitrage generally relies on small, but guaranteed profit, on large volume. I don't see how this is possible in the bitcoin market at this time.

My guess is that big money players will try to manipulate the BTC price just prior to the futures expiration date. One way to check this is to look for huge volume leading up to the day the futures are settled.

Currently it appears that a modest sized trade in bitcoin can move the price significantly.

So here's the strategy for the big boys:

    1. Accumulate bitcoins (already done, hence the recent price increase)

    2. Buy (or sell) futures contracts when available

    3. Buy (or sell) bitcoins just prior to futures settlement in an attempt to manipulate the price and maximizing the profit from your futures position.

Reasons why this may not work:

    1. It's illegal

    2. There will be parties vested on either side, trying to "outbid" each other to move the price of BTC.

    Reasons why this might work:

    1. Huge profit potential due to the futures contract being leveraged

    2. Relative anonymity of BTC transactions (It may be hard to identify the people trying to buy/sell large amounts of BTC to manipulate the price)

I suspect buyers will outnumber sellers during the critical period before futures expiration. This is because it is easier to buy large amounts of bitcoins than sell them. You just need cash. To sell, you need bitcoins already in possesion or you need to be able to short it, both have limitations.

Just one caveat, this is pure speculation on my part and I am posting this just to get discussion and feedback. Please let me know your thoughts.

I am making a list of markets that trade in EUR or accept SEPA for EU citizens.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2017 09:36 AM PST

    Hi!

    Here's the list: https://robbeschepens.gitbooks.io/cryptocurrency-markets-eu/content/

I made a list that tries to collect all cryptocurrency markets that allow SEPA deposits and withdrawals or trades in EUR in other ways.

I'm quite new to cryptocurrency. I've heard about it plenty of times in the past but only now I'm getting into it. This list was handy for myself to make a broader picture of all the investment platforms available.

If you know more markets that allow SEPA, please let me know! Also, I am trying to find a market similar to Kraken: offering a lot of cryptocurrencies and trading in EUR, yet it's difficult as it seems there aren't really any alternatives to it. If you got an alternative, let me know.

Continued Institutional Investment Impact on the Market

    Posted: 04 Dec 2017 09:00 AM PST

    Hi all,

I was chatting w/ a friend and she was explaining how when you work with other people's money in an institutional setting, it's obviously important to show profits since you need to make your clients money but also that your yearly bonuses are tied to these profits.

In the context of Crypto, she said that probably not this year, but maybe the end of the fiscal year 2018, she would assume there are a lot of institutional sell offs to take make clients money and cash out on huge performance bonuses. Also the fact that so many newer investors have gotten in will cause more panic sells than usual and she predicts a larger drop simply due to the sheer amount of institutional money outweighing the common crypto investor and having a larger impact.

While I recognize this sounds pessimistic, her tone was more like this is just an observation. Most of what she said later went over my head and I don't have the background to counter or make any valid points so I just listened.

I wanted to ask what others thought of something like this. Is this a balanced opinion? Would the CME Bitcoin Futures also be related to this?

    Thanks!

Buying passively as a maker vs buying actively as a taker - how often will you miss your price in an attempt to save on fees?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2017 07:28 AM PST

How often do you notice that you post a maker order in an attempt to save on the taker fee, but then market ends up moving more than what you would have paid in taker fees before you get filled? Seems to be happening to me a lot lately, movements seem to head in one solid direction for extended periods, meaning that the makers on one side (the side I'm on, naturally) will never get hit.

A scenario for bitcoin (and cryptos) for 2018

    Posted: 04 Dec 2017 01:17 AM PST

TLDR: Next month: +/-15-20k$ then drop to +/-10k$. 2018: massive adoption by financial traders leading to +/-100k$, and a crash of traditional financial products.

    Next month

As bitcoin has reached general public attention thanks to the general and social media, a large fraction of the general public realizes that, irrespective of the alarms to the contrary of banks etc. early investors in crypto have had massive returns on their investments, that none of their current accounts or stock investments can match. On top, bitcoin and other cryptos are easy and fast to get through many exchanges.

Around the year end celebrations, a very large number of people therefore decide to take the plunge, opening exchange accounts for themselves or to make a gift to friends and family. Expect new subscriptions to exchanges like Coinbase in the order of 1 million per day during several days? Due to delays in transferring money, this leads to massive purchases in the first weeks of 2018, followed by massive sales +/- 1 month later as weak hands take some profit.

My expectation is for bitcoin prices to jump to 15-20k$ then drop to +/-10k$. Other cryptos evolving in a similar fashion, but less so due to their lesser popularity.

    2018

Superimposed on the adoption taking place in the general public, the very wealthy and financial traders realize that the returns on their traditional investments, even the more risky derivatives, even with the best tax evasion schemes, pale in comparison to the returns enjoyed by investors in cryptocurrencies.

Due to their habit of accessing financial instruments via authorized traders and established institutions, they so far were frustrated of the possibility to invest in cryptocurrencies in any significant way (like multi-million $ bets), and with sufficient legal comfort.

The gates open to them as several traditional traders and financial companies open the possibility for them to invest in crypto, crypto-derivatives and futures in the early months of 2018. Crypto fall in their comfort zone.

A massive influx of bitcoin and other crypto acquisitions then ensues, when the 1% that owns 50% of the world wealth pours billions of $ into cryptomarkets. The value of cryptocurrencies explodes, just like it did in 2017: from 10k$ to 100k$?

A side effect is that all the money flowing into cryptocurrencies is money that is diverted from the more traditional investments in stocks and derivative financial products. Follows a drop in stock markets, possibly leading to a historical crash, itself leading to a further devaluation of the $ and other fiat currencies via the bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Imagine the rest... How will the possibility to pay with crypto in shops evolve next year? What impact will it have on the above scenario? What could be the reaction of diverse governments in diverse parts of the world? How could it affect the debt situation of the poorer countries of the world?

Monday Morning Quarterbacking Dec 4th 2017

    Posted: 03 Dec 2017 08:42 PM PST

I missed my self-imposed deadline last week, so get ready for a double-long, twice as ramble-y edition of Monday Morning Quarterbacking! Where I share the weekly screenshot of my current position. Link to those screenshots at the very end of this wall of text.

Have you heard the tragedy of /u/BlackSpidy, the trader? Ironic, he could convince other people to believe in the rally... but not himself.

Guys... I'm starting to think that the short I opened up at $5070 was a bad idea. I'm pretty sure I've gone through all the stages of grief except rage, with this short. This is the... third time such a situation has happened, where I've held on to an ultimately losing position past the point of "OK, I'll take a small loss. Regroup, rethink, and live to trade another day". Good news is that my base price isn0t that far below the current price, at $8K. Which is a 20% drop from the current price... I'm not my finest hour, obviously. But not at my lowest low. Before, I was still playing along with a kind of "brute force buy low, sell high". I would have sell orders across the orderbook separated by $200. If they were filled, I would place a buy order that was a tiny bit larger at a price $200 below the price at which the sell order was filled. Needless to say, the market out-paced my strategy and shot up from $5000 to $11000. That impressive shot up in price was done with considerable corrections that helped me not get wrecked, but those corrections were too few for me to exit the short at a profit and seamlessly transition into a low-risk long (which was the plan from the very beginning).

Anyways, I've reached the cap I had decided, of $654. I will not make this position larger than that. It is the most I can afford to leverage my trading stash, over at Bitmex. So, now my intent is to exit this cursed position (I swear, it's like I've angered the crytocurrency gods). But not all at once. I margin bought 15 dollars at $11300, to reduce the position. And I placed 3 sell orders, one 5% above that price, one 9% above, one 14% above. Next week, I'm going to place a market order for another 15 dollars. And the one after that... The idea is to exit this position in a year, not growing it beyond the $654 cap, and... managing the sell orders for those market buys... in a way that hopefully is beneficial to me? I never said I was an expert bitcoin trader. I've always made a point to tell that I don't really know what I'm doing... I just have a general idea of what I want the result to be.

I've gotten about same amount of USD out of bitcoin as I've put in. I recently made a purchase of $82 worth of bitcoin. So long as the amount of bitcoin I hold has a value of more than $100, I'm ok. It's been very entertaining, and even if I get liquidated (god, I hope that never happens), I will be glad to have had a few rides on this roller coaster. I will have been glad to be a member of this community. If you ask me, the experiences I've had trading over these last 3 years of bitcoin are worth the $90 expense I have on it ("expense" in this case, meaning the amount of USD that I've put into bitcoin that I haven't gotten out). I've lost lots of opportunities to make lots of money in this market. But there's no point crying over lost bitcoin.

Phew, that's quite a wall of text.

Tl;Dr: I got wrecked holding on ti a short, but I'll survive... hopefully. I plan to. I have a plan to deploy in order to survive. Best of luck trading, everyone ;)

Anyways, Position starting Tuesday November 28th 2017: 595 contracts short, entry at ~$7634 (USD).

Position starting Monday December 4th 2017: 639 contracts short, entry at ~$8093 (USD).

Best of luck trading, everyone ;)

    Trading and security

    Posted: 03 Dec 2017 06:06 PM PST

I've heard many people saying not to leave money on the exchanges because of obvious reasons. I want to understand the process. Does that mean that every day they transfer all their bitcoin/altcoins to desktop wallets and / or hardware wallet? If that is the case, won't they miss some price action between the transfers back and forth (+fee for back and forth + time involved)? Moreover how can I get a stop loss or take profit order triggered if the coin is not on the exchange? Also fiat in terms of usdt (after selling some coins), do they use a service to convert to usd and then transfer to a bank account and then put money back to the exchange when needed?

What I understand is that people move coins/bitcoin that they want to take as profit or consider as longer term investments. Am I correct in thinking that?

    sorry for the 101 questions.

    Thanks cryptopaths
