It is tax season again in the USA. I am a CryptoTaxLawyer. AMA!

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 11:30 AM PST

    Hi r/Cryptocurrency,

In case you haven't caught one of my other AMA's, I am a US-based attorney practicing cryptocurrency law with a strong emphasis on questions of taxation. I've been in the cryptocurrency space as an investor since 2013, so I've seen much the development of the cryptocurrency community, regulations, and use-cases first-hand. As a practicing attorney I consider it a privilege to have successfully shifted my hobby into a career in such an excitng, cutting-edge field of law. Now that tax season is in full swing again, I wanted to drop in and host another AMA as Americans start the process of untangling their 2021 cryptocurrency activity.

As always, I'll try to respond to as many questions as possible, including in the coming days/weeks, so if you're late to the party please feel free to drop your comment/question and I'll circle back to provide answers when I have the time.

Disclaimer: This AMA is not the place to get specific legal, tax, or investment advice. Everyone's tax situation is different, so you should always consult with your own tax professional before acting on anything you read online. What makes sense for one person's situation might not make sense for you. For this reason, this AMA is for general informational purposes only and does not create any professional attorney-client relatioships.

Edit: Hey guys, I've answered a lot of questions and its getting pretty late. If you're seeing this AMA still, feel free to comment and I'll get the notification moving forward indefinitely. I'm off for the night, but thank you all for your questions and comments!

Feel free to reach out at any time and I'll try my best to provide some clarification where I can!

He has 102,000,000 followers on Instagram where he posted this 5 minutes ago.

NFT is easily the most practical utility for blockchain but at the moment it is completely associated with JPEGs and Farts in a jar. Here is a look at some interesting utilities.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 05:13 PM PST

NFT is now the butt of jokes and its making crypto look bad. There is finally something that can show the world the capability of blockchains and what crypto is capable off, and instead it is turn into a cash grab of JPEGs and weird antics. It was kind of neat as a novelty but now not so much.

But NFT is so much more and it deserves better. Lets change things by decoupling the JPEG from NFT. I will start first. Here is a random list.

    • Land deeds and proof of ownership. The really cool thing about this is that it can even over time keep track of changes to the property.
      • There is a recent Florida auction that was sold this way and attracted over 7,000 bidders.
    • Medical records. Imagine your own medical NFT ledger that you can give access to and can deny at will. This includes tracking your access of your data for research/insurance/marketing.
      • George Church has started a genome sequencing company called Nebula that is exploring this.
      • ever got to a new doctors office and filling a shit load of paper work, twice? Well with NFT it could be just a simple access request.
    • IP/patents can be documented and verified so that there is no question who invented what.
      • I'm not just talking about selling the NFT as a patent but literaly to track work related to the patents. This is a huge issue when it comes time to say who invented what and who gets the patent. The latest controversy was with CRISPR.
    • any type of ID can now be easily verified and difficult to fake - that means someone can't just scan your driver license and make a clone of it.
    • Ticketmaster killer, you know what I mean here. And NFT tickets can easily be linked to special subevents like autographs, special access and what not.
    • Linking to real world assets to ensure authenticity. One I heard of recently is linking the odometer in cars and preventing people from turning it back.
    • Anything that requires a real life contract.
    • notary.
    • etc.

the point is that its not something hypothetical; its real and its probably one of the easiest way to increase use of cryptocurrency and blockchains. So lets not do it any more damage by constantly linking JPEGS/digital arts to NFT because its so much more.

    thanks for reading.

What its like currently holding ADA.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 05:49 AM PST

Hodling ADA is like you're eating at a 5 star gourmet restaurant where Gordon Ramsey (Charles Hoskinson) is the chef. Its renouned worldwide . Bottles of wine start at $500. All that to say that the food should be amazing. Only for you to be served chicken tendies and soggy fries from the kids menu.

You look around then down at your plate. "I thought this was supposed to be good?" You think to yourself.

Here comes your buddy, the guy who invited you to the restaurant. (Put in his entire life savings in at $0.35)

"Told you this place is the shit bro." Your buddy says as he sits down and is served a TV dinner from Banquet.

"Oh yeah the food isn't great... right now. But wait until later trust me bro." He says as he starts to unwrap the plastic film with a big grin on his face.

Just as you were about to take a bite of your tendie Allincrypto sits down at your table. "Sup boys, Allincrypto here." Then immediately takes a bite of a turd Charles Hoskinsin layed on his plate.

"Oh my favorite!" He says as he leans forward and eats the log apple bobbing style with no hands.

"Don't think about your food now. Think about the filet mignon of tomorrow." As he goes in for another bite.

Disgusted, you look out the window at a run down diner across the street. You peer into the window and see families laughing and having a good time. You see the waitress walk over to the table with what looks like a bacon cheeseburger and a new york strip steak.

"Wow that looks pretty good." You mutter to yourself.

Just as you say that Allincrypto and your buddy surround you.

"That place is so shit." They say in unison as they both proceed to shut the curtains from each side.

Right before the curtains fully close you look up at the neon sign above the diner. It reads "Ethereum diner"

You turn around and stand up. Everyone in the restaurant has stopped eating and is glaring at you in complete silence.

    "Hail Hydra" they start chanting.

They all get up and start to surround you while still chanting "Hail Hydra"

A woman shouts from the back, "Hydra will save us! Kill the non believer!"

"Im sorry! I will eat my tendie please don't hurt me! That place across the street sucks." But it doesn't work and they proceed towards you slowly. You shut your eyes and prepare for the worst.

You suddenly wake up in your bed.

"Omg it was a dream. Thank god." You think to yourself.

You pull out your phone to look at your portfolio.

    $10,000 bought at $2.68. Portfolio down 69.420%

You walk over to the bathroom and catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror. You smile with a tear rolling down your cheek. You notice your teeth are smeared with shit.

"I wouldn't have it any other way." You think to yourself.

You proceed to go on Reddit to post about the new Solana outage and check what new features are coming soon to Cardano.

You look right into the camera. After a long pause you smile and shout "Hail Hydra" at the top of your lungs.

The camera zooms away from your face and out of your RV thats parked in front of your step dads house and the credits start rolling.

What is your personal exit strategy?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 02:07 AM PST

I was just wondering if you have any or not, and how it does look like. Do you just hodl and hope for the best or have most of you an actual plan?

I for myself don't have a real exit strategy to take my gains out. My hopium is more based on some trading to get the fast gains and then pump those in stable coins and btc, eth and cro. I hope to get enough apy from them to make my life easier at some distant point in the future. So i have no real plans in selling them, i just hodl them. So for me i found i have no real exit plan and i continue to throw money against the wind.

What are the best new blockchain based games where you can make beer money?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 12:48 AM PST

I'm reading that people are making a good bit of cash from just playing these play to earn games. A lot of these games are imo a bit rubbish, but when I saw this list some seem genuinely good. Like they've put thought into the mechanics. On top of that, the in-game economies are pretty favorable towards the players right now.

Now being a gamer myself I wanted to see if there's a good game to get into where I wouldn't have to put in a ton of money just to get started - only for the game to crash and burn. If I can spare an hour or so everyday on a decent game (that's actually fun and not one of the countless rip offs) and get paid to do it, that's pretty good imo. It'd be pretty cool to earn for doing something you like ala YouTube content creators.

Binance, led by the world’s richest crypto billionaire, is taking a $200 million stake in Forbes

Binance, led by the world's richest crypto billionaire, is taking a $200 million stake in Forbes

Binance, the world's biggest cryptocurrency exchange, is making a $200 million strategic investment in Forbes, the 104-year old magazine and digital publisher, CNBC has learned.

The funds will help Forbes execute on its plan to merge with a publicly-traded special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, in the first quarter, according to people with knowledge of the deal. Source

Don't you think that Binance would become a monopolist in the crypto world (it's like it has it's own pocket media now)? So what's the plan? Are you buying BNB now?

Who wants to get their normal paycheck in your crypto of choice instead? If you have Coinbase this is now possible.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 03:39 PM PST

Just mind blowing. When I opened my Coinbase app today I saw a banner advertising direct deposit (avoid making transfer fees) get paid in crypto. This wasn't a lie. I have already given the new direct deposit form for my banking account (Meta Bank, which Coinbase is using) to my current job.

Since I actively use my USDC to use for payments and purchases receiving 4% back in Stellar Lumens, I decided to designate my paycheck into USDC. This does not have to be your choice however.

Most crypto that is listed on Coinbase you can now get paid in. Yes Btc. Yes Dogecoin. Yes { your choice here}.

Love to hear who all is doing this and what crypto they have chosen!

Coinbase Customer Service .......... three words that don't exist.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 06:03 PM PST

I didn't receive some crypto from a purchase with my debit card in my Coinbase account. Tried to resolve it by opening a ticket and after 5 or 6 back and forth with Coinbase cut and paste replies, I gave up. Tried to chat with their support a few times, each time one rep transferring to another rep with more "expertise", until the chat system would time out and log me off wtf.

Then decided to file a dispute with my bank. That dispute is not even resolved yet, but as soon as Coinbase learned of the disputed amount, they sold off crypto in my account for the amount in dispute! I don't know how this is a public company with investors, Stay Away!

Is it ok to have an 100% of one coin as a portfolio ?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 03:21 PM PST

Whilst I understand my title confuses itself with one coin making up an entire portfolio , but for periods of time I've held just one coin with my investment funds .

And whilst I understand one coin might drop one day and you don't have a supporting coin to help keep the portfolio up , I'd argue that aslong as it's what you would argue as a relatively top 10 secure coin, and not some shit coin pump and dump , it's understandable to have a 100% of one coin as your portfolio , if you're in it for the long run and believe in the project itself , it shouldn't be too much of an issue ?

Edit - my argument for example would be holding 100% ETH OR BTC , or even BNB?

This is why everyone else hates crypto people

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 05:16 AM PST

From time to time I'll see people around here post thread or message in the daily chat complaining about the fact that "people are so hostile to us in other subreddits".

Well, I have spent the last few months hanging out around here, and I believe I have found why that is : delusion and collective hysteria.

Seriously, I love this sub, but it has to be one of the biggest echo chamber out there, its even worst than wallstreetbets. Every bullish comment gets upvoted, and every even so slightly bearish comment gets downvoted, thats the r/cryptocurrency way! People get told to buy when the coin is up, when its down, when it rug pull, before the update, after the update, after the news, if you'd listen to people here you'd always buy! Not only that, but you'd buy the shitcoins that get promoted over and over again. If you even dare suggesting that an altcoin in particular might not be of much value long term, you get the army of shitcoin bagholders to silence you.

The result is people are scared to say what they think, they dont wanna go against the r/cryptocurrency party line. What makes things worse is the moon system, which litteraly provide rewards for participating in the echo chamber. The more bullish the comment, the more upvotes it gets! This cycle fuels a machine which slowly makes all of us more and more delusional, until we inevitably fall into collective hysteria. Problem is when you leave this sub, you sometimes don't realize you're also leaving the dogma, and everyone else that wasnt exposed to it perceive your opinion as absurdly bullish, leaving them thinking that you're either crazy or full of shit.

I dont have a solution to offer, I just wanted to point it out.

Pretty impressive that the market just shook off the news of the 7.5% inflation rate in the US.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 12:13 PM PST

As usual, the market does whatever the hell it wants to. The news of 7.5% inflation in the US brought a quick price decrease but more impressively an ever quicker recovery of the market. Love to see those bounces happen in our favor. This is definitely a sign of the tines with the market looking to reach new ATHs sometine during the month of February. I'm not calling out any one coin but we all know who the big boy on the block is that we want to see hit that 6 digure new ATH!

One would think this type of news would crash the market pretry hard, at least it has in the past, but more and more this type of news is having much more short term impact on the market as a whole. You can pretty much take a nap and the prices are right back up. I'd say the big boy hits $50k by this weekend and starts churning toward a record impressive new ATH!

I'm loading up my bags now to reap the benefits later on down the road. Make your money make money for you! Don't forget to save some money for ramen noodles.

We will always be called lucky instead of smart but I am happy about it

    Posted: 10 Feb 2022 08:52 PM PST

TDLR: If crypto dumps they will call us chumps but if it pumps we will be known as the lucky ones. This does show us that we are still early.

It is funny how Investors in any other sector of the market will be referred to as smart when they make a good amount of green in their portfolio. However, whenever it comes to crypto we will only be referred to as the lucky ones. If the market dips then we are the idiots who got ourselves in a Ponzi scheme. While the order sectors such as stock and housing investors will be called unluck when their end of the market dumps.

It is funny how people really hate crypto and NFTs without having a proper understanding of any of them. I have learned to teach people about crypto and educate those near me but would never disclose my investments and what I am investing in, cause we all know too well what will happen.

Tough a bright side to all this shows how early we are in this market. Most of the general public still do not understand what are crypto and NFTs. Heck, some still think BTC is a company. I do not mind people hating on crypto cause at the end of the day eventually they will know and while they do not I will just accumulate.
