    Frequently Asked Questions

Where's the best place to buy ETH?

There are many centralized exchanges that support Ethereum. If you live in the US, the most popular exchanges are Coinbase, Gemeni and Kraken. Coinbase users can use Coinbase Pro for lower fees.

    When is Eth2 launching?

Eth2 is a marketing term used to represent a number of updates to Ethereum. The Eth2 proof-of-stake chain first launched in December 2020. "The Merge", which is the event that will fully switch Ethereum's consensus to proof-of-stake, is estimated to be ready in early 2022, although there is no exact timeline. Other updates, such as data shards, will follow that update.

Visit ethmerge.com to learn more about "The Merge".

Do I need to do anything to update to Eth2? Will Eth2 create a new token?

No, ETH holders never need to take any action to keep holding ETH. Ethereum users will be unaffected by the Eth2 upgrade. And the Eth2 updates will not create any new tokens.

How can I stake my ETH?

There are two ways that you can stake your ETH: by running your own validator, or providing your ETH to a staking pool.

    • Running your own validator requires a modern computer and 32 ETH. Visit /r/ethstaker for more details
    • Staking pools accept any amount of ETH. We recommend Lido or StakeWise

Why are Ethereum transaction fees so high?

Like most blockchains, Ethereum fees are determined by supply-and-demand. The large demand to use Ethereum has pushed transaction fees quite high (however, fees were just a few cents only 2 years ago). Fees are especially high during market volatility, and during NFT drops.

What is being done to lower Ethereum transaction fees?

Ethereum fees are reduced by using layer-2 rollups. Rollups are scaling solutions that allow for significantly cheaper transactions, while still maintaining Ethereum's security.

Additionally, Eth2's data shards will make rollups even cheaper.

While rollups are cutting-edge technology being actively developed, a number are already live on Ethereum mainnet. Visit l2beat.com to learn more about rollups.

What's the best wallet for Ethereum?

The most popular tool for using decentralized applications is Metamask. However, for security reasons, we recommend using a hardware wallet such as a Trezor or Ledger.

There is a lot of scamming going on right now.

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 09:50 PM PST

Please be on the lookout for websites called eth2022, microstrategy, eth-invest as THEY ARE SCAMS to steal your hard earned ethereum. Do not fall for them. Seriously. This isn't the first time they have done this and there are a lot of live streams on youtube currently promoting them. They ask for some eth or btc etc and offer to send you back double. IT'S A SCAM. Posting this for awareness.

How to avoid high gas fee for staking?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2021 05:10 AM PST

I usually use L2 for widthrawing/depositing but how about staking fee? Suddenly i have crazy high fees for staking alone.

also currently most of my local cex still offer erc20 network with crazy high gas fee, so when I transfer USDT or ETH is quite crazy, and they don't offer other pair-coin beside top 10 coins.
My friend already bought in shitty cex because it's offer local currency with his bank and stuck with high gas fee with limited options

    Drawbacks of Sharding

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 10:41 PM PST

    Hi Eth crew,

Just worked my way through Vitalik's posts on Sharding, I think I understand the base concept behind sharding, and the Ethereum proposed implementation to solve for availability and the fisherman's dilemma.

What I'm still keen to understand, is the weaknesses of sharding from the perspective of someone who is not a proponent. Vitalik has outlined what he sees as answers to a number of criticisms of the approach, but I would like to explore what other arguments people are making against sharding.

In particular, Vitalik makes some good arguments against high TPS chains, particularly in regards to forking and trustlessness, so I'd be interested to hear why such chains opted away from a sharding-type solution.

As an example, I've seen some high level articles quoting the Solana CEO, and his opposition to sharding, but I'd be interested in a particular article or podcast where they go deep into the subject.

    misplaced wallet

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 03:12 PM PST

It's been some years since I accidently lost some ethereum (maybe) by wiping a laptop. I still possess the private key, but I don't know whether the ether still exists, or what the address was. Is there any way to recover it with just the keyphrase? Thanks - if I am able to recover it, whoever instructs me how is welcome to $50 or so of etherum. Thanks!

Unpopular Opinion: For many people L2 isn't cheaper

    Posted: 06 Dec 2021 02:05 AM PST

    Hear me out.

Obviously an L2, like Loopring, can do a transaction today for $0.32. That same transaction would cost $9.07 on ETH L1.

But the per-transaction cost isn't the only factor...

How I invest is as follows ... I save my money .... and whenever there is a major dip .... I move my fiat into a CEX, buy some crypto, move it to a wallet I control, then use Uniswap to buy the asset I want to invest in and HODL.

When I invest I incur the $100ish L1 fee anyway. To use L2 I would still need to incur the L1 fee anyway and then incur an L2 fee as well. This makes no sense, for me and how I invest.

So for me, to use L2 I first have to incur the L1 fee to deposit my crypto into the L2 solution. So using L2 makes sense for people who transact often. But not for me.

Is there a better way? Am I doing something wrong? For my investing pattern is there a more cost efficient way to invest?

    Gas and transaction costs

    Posted: 06 Dec 2021 12:22 AM PST

Hello everyone. I'm fairly new to all of this, but like many of you I have experienced gas costs and other transaction costs. I am wondering if there are any methods to minimize or offset these costs. Any help is much appreciated.

How can DeFi projects keep themselves secure? Seems like audits just aren't good enough anymore...

    Posted: 06 Dec 2021 06:39 AM PST

No project code is perfect right out of the box.

Don't get me wrong... there's a ton of talented devs in the Web3 space. Add that with the growing number of projects, smart contracts, and wallets added on a daily basis, and the threats rise exponentially.

You can't just "set and forget" your security protocols. Security is dynamic and projects need to constantly stay on the offensive -- or risk getting hacked, exploited, etc.

Just getting an audit isn't good enough anymore... their bandwidth and scope are limited.

    Solution?

Run a bug bounty. Code is dynamic. You'll have a "team" of hackers constantly poring over your code looking for vulnerabilities.
