Introduced my friend to Crypto, Now he wont speak to me.

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 10:14 PM PDT

I knew a guy called John. me and him had been friends for a long time, nearly 10 years i think. i got into crypto a while back and i'd obviously talk about it with him, encourage him to start as it is a great hobby to have. John claimed he was too 'busy' to invest, i.e. playing video games all day and jacking off in his uni dorm room.

However, recently, John had a change of heart. he wanted to pull himself together and thought that crypto would be the catalyst so he came to me to learn. naturally i was ecstatic, this was one of my best friends and i really enjoy teaching people things. I taught John everything i knew, how to use exchanges, how to set up a wallet, how to spot good projects, the trends of the market etc.. i spent countless hours of my personal time helping him learn basic things (he is a bit slow).

Now, i warned John to steer clear of shitcoins. i told him that although you may get lucky and get rich quick, the chance of this happening is so low and newbies like him fall victim to these scams the most. he was very off put by this and assured me he would avoid them.

A few weeks go buy and i received a very long message from John. He told me he was quitting crypto and he had lost all of his savings he put in. i was shocked, but as i read the message it became clear to me what had happened. he said a youtuber had basically shilled him a 'low market cap' coin telling him he could 50x his money in a week. Yes, John fell victim to a pump and dump.

This is where it gets worse, i replied asking why would he do this when i advised him otherwise. i got no message back, i called him a few days after and to my shock the phone would instantly hang up. John blocked me on everything, not just phone but instagram, whatsapp, facebook. i was shocked and upset, i had done nothing wrong. i asked one of our mutual friends if i could speak to John, and he told me that John wanted nothing to do with me because i had made him lose all his money,

He didnt blame himself, or even the scammy youtuber, he blamed the person who introduced him to crypto and warned him of scams.

It really hurts writing this knowing ive lost someone i knew for 10 years over something i didn't even do. i just tried to help.

The moral of the story is don't advise people to get into crypto, or tell them what to invest in, friends or even family, because when shit goes south the first person they will blame is you.

edit: thanks for all the advice and support guys, ive changed my mind and im no longer sad about this. its better to get rid of people like this now than in the future.

Texas Governor Signs Groundbreaking Cryptocurrency Bill into Law

    Posted: 13 Jun 2021 03:47 AM PDT

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has signed into law a game-changing cryptocurrency bill, according to his recent tweet:

"I just signed a law that puts virtual currency under the Texas Uniform Commercial Code to be a secured transaction. It defines virtual currency, establishes when a person acquires a right in it, and when a person has control of it."

The "Virtual Currency Bill"— which positions the Lone Star state as one of the leaders in the crypto industry—was passed by both chambers of the Republican-dominated legislature in May.

Abbott has also signed a bill that bans "Zuckerbucks" (money funneled by private groups for administering state elections).

Cuba has asked tourists not to bring dollars with them to the Caribbean island, as the US currency will no longer be accepted in the country, according to the first vice president of the Central Bank, Francisco Mayobre Lence.

    Posted: 13 Jun 2021 02:53 AM PDT

"People who will be coming into the country during this time will have to arrive with a currency other than the dollar," the senior official said, as quoted by Granma, the official newspaper of Cuba's ruling Communist Party.

Tourists will be allowed to use cards for payments, as well as make cash withdrawals in other currencies.

Earlier this week, the Cuban government announced that the country's banks would temporarily stop accepting cash deposits in dollars. Havana cited severe US sanctions that prevent the nation from using the greenback abroad as the reason for the move.

Both measures come into effect on June 21, and the duration for which they will remain in force depends on the lifting of US sanctions, according to the bank.

I got another one for you guys - I coded a tool to help you find a profitable trading strategy using backtesting on historical data, as always it's open source

    Posted: 13 Jun 2021 05:38 AM PDT

I got another one for you guys - I coded a tool to help you find a profitable trading strategy using backtesting on historical data, as always it's open source

So you guys may have seen some of my previous posts, where I shared several open sourced crypto trading algorithms that I coded. Many of you asked if they have been backtested and how that would work.

So I created this quick tool to help you assess the profitablity of your trading strategy of trading bot if you're using one.

Backtesting is a way of feeding your current trading strategy to a script that applies it on historical data, in order to determine how successful it could be in the future.

Past performance does not always guarantee future returns, but it's good practice to test your strategy (or trading algorithm) before you go ham.

The script downloads historical data for a coin of your choice, and at an interval of your choosing. This is then used by the script to determine how profitable a strategy can be, and whether it has the potential to beat a buy and hold.

At the end of the testing phase, the tool will generate a plot showing each trade and final balance.

    https://preview.redd.it/keifsz3901571.png?width=3604&format=png&auto=webp&s=5cbcf4bc64e2e23772b30de9fa10854d0543a1a5

Working with historical data since the start of this year, I fed it a simple strategy - buy if the price is up 1% in the last minute. Sell at 10% gain or 5% loss - but you can customise these parameters yourself. This strategy made a marginal loss on ICPUSDT, but then this is probably not the best coin to test on since it's been in decline ever since it was listed on Binance.

Here's the same strategy on NANOUSDT, seems like we're $800 in profit.

    Happy Testing!

    Inflation is getting serious.

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 03:01 PM PDT

I work at a dominos as a part time job while I go to trade school and today we have officially raised the prices on every item in the store. They said we'll get a raise but it hasn't happened yet and it just kind of slipped under everyone's nose. No one has asked about the prices being raised or anything. A dude ordered 10 pizzas today and it costed him $160 for 10 cheese pizzas…. It's scary because I see nothing but middle and lower class people come in and order food almost everyday and it's the same people or crowd for the most part. Honestly this is the first time I've dealt with inflation or have witnessed it first hand but my mind is blown.

What's the best way to leave my Uniswap and BSC portfolio to my family?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2021 05:47 AM PDT

I am terminally ill and will probably not be here anymore before the market recovers. This is very sudden and my family do not know about this. Unless a miracle happens, I could be gone this week. My portfolio is mostly coins bought on Uniswap and PCS so my family won't have a clue on how and when to cash out. Converting right now is not something I want to do because I believe the coins will be worth a lot more in the future. Is there anything I can do in this situation? Simply giving them my ledger won't work because it takes digging through etherscan to even know the full extent of this portfolio.

    What are my options?

Edit for some more detail: since I still have a student debt and it's for my mom, leaving a will would not help her. The government would liquidate it. Also, most coins are memecoins that I bought before the market crash while overall market sentiment was peaking. This was life changing money at that point but I was an idiot and neglected to cash out.

Crypto Currency might have saved my life!

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 05:01 PM PDT

So August 2020 I went blank, in a middle of a Zoom meeting!

Turned out it was the beginning of a Burn-out and subsequent Depression. I actually had a cool life: House, Wife, and two kids. (third was born in November, birth, I did not get to enjoy) I had no reason to be unhappy. Nevertheless I crashed. I was plagued with Panic-Attacks, crippling anxiety and I quickly became suicidal.

I lost my job but thanks to a little cash saved, we still survived.

In January my wife told me to find a hobby to fill the void left by my all-encompassing job.

I was never a "hobby-kind-of-guy" so after googling some ideas, I by accident arrived at an article about the Blockchain and all the different Crypto coins. I was fascinated! I read like 50 Whitepapers in a week! I was hooked. I start buying some coins of projects I liked, and I joined this amazing community. Am I 100% cured? not at all, but I got a new job, got rid of the antidepressants, and I can't even remember the last time I had a panic attack. It's a step in the right direction.

Just so you know, I only invest what I can afford, and even though prices had gone south since I started, a don't care! I am in this for the long haul.

Again guys, thank you! You just might have saved my life.

President/Chief Scientist DFINITY is rewarding 100 ICP to doxxx a Redditor spreading FUD.

    Posted: 13 Jun 2021 06:06 AM PDT

    Start of the ''FUD":

We all know ICP had terrible performance this month, partly due to their distribution scheme and partly due to the whole market being down. A Redditor started posting in different Dfinity subreddits spreading stories about the team ''- Huge team. Wonder if they are real people or fake Tinder like profiles. Most of them successful, established, ex employees of Google, Apple and the likes.'' This quickly escalated in him posting numerous allegations to the team, in one (now deleted) post in particular:

''Project team is 80% fake profiles with fake biographies. This can be done in a few days, usually costs $5-$50 per profile creation (a picture, paragraph of text). On the lower side ($5) they're using online available images (for which they pay royalties), on the higher side ($50) they hire a model to pose for the profile shot and making them sign an NDA''

    Chief Scientist response:

Multiple team members and community members checked if there were any fake members on the Dfinity team, nothing found whatsoever. This pissed of the Chief Scientist of Dfinity, Dominic Williams which replied the following:

''This is me, Dominic Williams. Whoever wrote this is just some slimy moron looking to exploit people's angst about the current market situation. Obviously, not one single team member profile is fake. People also work full time, rather than being associates or advisers, as is so often the case in blockchain. The technical achievements of the project are manifest and towering, and would not have been possible without the organisation that exists. Meanwhile, the foundation, founders and directors weren't even able to sell initially because of regulatory lockups. The price drop was largely (it seems) due to people who have a very low basis selling to lock in huge gains. But regardless about the reasons for what happened in this market, whoever wrote this piece is deliberately lying in order to exploit people's pain and it's disgusting. Moreover, it's slanderous and the false claims are prosecutable by law. I personally offer a reward of 100 ICP for whoever provides the identity of this individual so that we can consider prosecuting them for slander. You know where to find me.''

    Drama continues.

Instead of de-escalating he took another route, go on the offensive. I get why he might be pissed on a personal level, but he seems to forget he's also leading a company. A simple permaban from all subreddits should've fixed the issue, but now the community is out for blood.

An open letter was published to Dominic, asking for his resignation. ''At every level and in every way you have demonstrated antagonism and suspicion towards those who held any interest in the promises you made about the internet computer's capabilities and instrumentality. Although there have been many spurious allegations made against your person and the team, you cannot deny that your conduct has produced a general atmosphere of distrust and opacity that generated such sentiments in the first place. You cannot and should not remain in any capacity of authority over the Internet Computer or the Dfinity Foundation.''

If it already wasn't a shitshow, now it's complete.

Every one of us should participate in the monthly proposals, to be eligible for the 5% increase to monthly karma total.

Open proposals that we can participate in right now.

    1. Increase Karma Requirements for Commenting

      1. Remove Karma Considerations for GIF Posts
      2. Allow tipping up to 10% Of Previous Distribution

For governance proposal, to be applied and successful, it has to reach a moons decision threshold.

MOONS are actually pretty great, it's greed that holds us back

    Posted: 13 Jun 2021 06:30 AM PDT

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I think that Moons are actually a really good feature, the problem comes more from the greed of people.

We have to power to help each other earn crypto at no cost to ourselves. The main issues is the exploitation of Moon farming/mass downvoting new posts, but that's not saying that the system still isn't good.

If you think that a post is an attempt at Moon farming, you just need to look at it's content. If it's looking to inform you about something, be sure to fact check it before just upvoting it. If you post a false headline, many will upvote without even looking into it. That is a problem.

A good example is the recent post about the Brave browser, most people just upvoted without looking into the claims, when there was actually responses from the Brave team.

    • Main point, try not to get too caught up in who you think is farming moons, and just upvote posts and comments that you want to.

Of course, Silvio Micali is NOT a team member of the MIT Digital Currency Initiative, and no one working for Algorand is explicitly named. Maybe I'm just randomly connecting some dots...

Proposal: Allow users to tip up to 10% of Moons received in the previous distribution without losing eligibility for the 20% bonus for holding.

    Posted: 12 Jun 2021 08:29 PM PDT

This proposal didn't pass the threshold of votes last round, but a few people suggested reintroducing the poll for this round too. Hopefully we meet the threshold this round!

As of now, there is no purpose for Moons on r/Cryptocurrency other than paying 10x more for a monthly membership. The tipping feature is nice, but it is rarely used due to the potential loss of eligibility for the 20% bonus. Users should be allowed to tip up to 10% of moons received in the previous distribution before losing eligibility for the 20% bonus for keeping their moons in their vault.

One argument against this change is the idea that users might use this to sell their moons while retaining eligibility for the bonus on the next distribution. By capping the amount of moons withdrawn to 10% of the previous distribution, the effect will be greatly reduced. The increase in attention due to the new use case of tipping users for providing good discussion should make up for this as well.

The IBEW—one of America’s largest and most powerful unions—just fought and won on behalf of Bitcoin miners and other PoW cryptos.

    Posted: 13 Jun 2021 06:30 AM PDT

You may have heard that recently the anti-cryptocurrency mining bill was defeated in the New York state legislature. I heard about it, but missed the fact that the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers—a powerful union with nearly 700,000 members—wrote a remarkable statement in support of the miners.

Here's the money paragraph: "While relatively new, cryptocurrency is becoming Increasingly mainstream as a payment method and financial investment. These currencies are global and mining centers are a key element of digital currency security. The technology that drives energy consumption at the centers is likely to be adopted by traditional financial institution and even national governments in the near future due to its inherent security."

If you'd told me five years ago that a massive union would be arguing and winning on behalf of PoW crypto miners, and arguing that soon governments will be adopting the tech, I would have laughed in your face.

Sure the market has been going sideways for a while, but damn, what a time to be alive.
