    Am I too late?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 07:41 AM PST

Later today I will be picking up my first mining rig. 6x RX580's 8Gb. Just wondering if I am too late to the party? My plan is to use some of my crypto profits to pay for the rig which is ~$3000 Canadian. I'm not super concerned with profits, totally fine with breaking even and just getting some educational equity. I've used all the calculators online and it looks like I should be able to pay the rig off in 6-8 months give the current prices which is totally ok with me. I understand too that current prices aren't the best indicator given the market climate. After doing some reading on this sub I am a little concerned I might be making a mistake... Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

hello miners, do you think ethereum will drop in price just like a few years ago? if so how long will the price of it stay as it is today? im mining ethereum on my gaming rig but im thinking about investing in ethereum or something else what do you think?

I upgraded the thermal pads on my 3080 get my hash rate back up to 99.99 MH/s. Gigabyte clearly didn't have mining in mind when they made their 3080s. I put a guide together on how to do it.

It's happening. Waiting for my CPU and risers then its game on.

HELP? Nanominer continuously displays "Ethereum: trying to use Stratum Protocol" and doesn't mine after having run properly up until now. Odd Behavior, details inside.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 03:51 AM PST

    Hey guys

I have 3 rigs up and running and while watching the GUI in nanominer it suddenly stopped behaving normally and started to continuously display the following message

"[DATE/TIME]: Ethereum: trying to use "stratum" mining protocol. . . to disable this behavior, specify: protocol=JSON-RPC"

It will also display "haven't received new job in X minutes" periodically.

I have tried to restart nanominer as well as the system itself.

I know that this issue is not isolated to one machine since multiple rigs started to display this message simultaneously.

There is also no issue with my internet connection, as I am able to use a web browser properly. All machines are also wired to ethernet. I also tried to restart my router.

I tried to download the newest version of nanominer to software test the issue but the output of the most recent version was identical.

more curiously, when the 30 second DevFee timeframe occurred, nanominer acted as normal and starting hashing at the expected rate and behaved normally, displaying hashrates and job status etc. When the DevFee timeframe ended, the GUI began to output a failure to connect repeatedly and after restarting again it went back to the problem explained above.

Does anybody know what might be causing this issue?

Thank you all for your time and help.

Do 3060 ti cards actually have RAM temp sensors?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 06:41 PM PST

    I have a mix of 3080 and 3060s.

Unlike the 3080s, the 3060s don't seem to throttle as much at memory high overclocks or even turn on the fan higher for some cards.

Instead I see lower share production when memory is too high.

I'm worried that the ram temps are unmanaged and just going sky high.

    Can anyone confirm?

Is there a mining os that can mine 2 coins?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:08 AM PST

I have 2 8gb cards and 2 4gb cards (polaris). Is there an os that can mine eth with the 8gb cards and kowpow on the 4gb ones. I know that nicehash has something loke this, but they are paying 10% less than direct mining.

    Current options for hedging?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 10:38 PM PST

So right now, ETH prices are high, producing handsome rewards for mining.

As a miner, this price is probably all I need. If I can lock in the price, or hedge against falls in the price, I can reduce most of the risk and very likely enjoy large profits.

To do this what is the current state of hedging? Eg, shorting ETH or buying/selling options?

Is it easy to do or impractical? Does it expose you to use amounts of risk or have large liquidity constraints? What exchanges or options are people using?

    Mature place for Ethereum discussion?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 06:49 PM PST

Like many of you I'm building this because it's technically interesting and can make a tidy profit.

Ethereum and crypto seems to work. It is really impressive.

I want to learn and communicate more about it.

However, places like /r/EthTrader are pretty much nuclear grade cringe, like an unironic /r/WallStreetBets. Adding to the delusional greed is invective and attacks against opinions that are out of line. The volume of low wattage, grasping group-think probably gives Qanon a run for its money.

Is there a mature place for people to have moderate and principled discussions of ETH and BTC, including skepticism?

Mining on Z490 with more than 4 GPUs

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 07:13 PM PST

I'm encountering this weird issue: mining with 4 GPUs, no issue. When I put in the fifth card, suddenly my bios won't recognize the windows drive (a m2 SATA SSD), and I cannot get the system to boot past the BIOS screen. Does anyone know how to make the system boot? The mobo is Z490 Tuf.

How much is the profitability going to be once the coins drop in price?

If the prices were similar to that of 2020 March prices, how much would profitability be for 30 MHs gpus?

IN the 3080 Gaming X Trio some modules are much more hotter than others. I've identified them in the pic. I measured 45c in that location in the backplate and 35c in the rest. If each module is 1gb, then those four must be holding the DAG file. All the heat is being concentrated in those 4 modules

    Help with power distribution?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 10:06 PM PST

    Hi all,

I snagged a rig with 5 x RX 580 8GB and realized the previous owner had wired it up all wrong. For starters, he was powering the risers via SATA to 6 Pin adapters. The PSU comes with 4 x 8 Pin VGA connections, each of the 4 x 8 Pin cables provided splits to dual 6+2 and he was powering the 5th card via splitter.

    Link to PSU

I picked up a 6th card today (1660 ti) and I'm essentially wondering if there's any way to safely run this 6 card rig given the limitations of the PSU

    4 x 8 Pin VGA 6 x 6 Pin peripheral 1 x 8 Pin CPU/EPS (unused)

My first thought is obviously chuck the SATA cables and potentially use the 6 Pin to dual 6+2 Y cables from parallel to hit 4 GPUs and their risers. Second thought is acquire one of these to power another GPU (and maybe its riser or even 2 GPUs?) and finally (if at all possible) power the remaining card and riser using a few peripheral ports.

Any insight would be appreciated. I'm not really looking to get a server PSU either, would add to my ROI and won't play nice with the Veddha frame.

    Cheers!
