Mixed GPU Rig. 1st Time Miner Newb Advice Needed...

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 02:35 PM PST

I probably should've done more research before buying parts. That said, basically I'm building my first mining rig. I ended up going after some 1070's as they were readily available. Was just going to start with a 6 GPU rig, but ended up wanting to switch them out to 5600xt's. Ended up with 7 5600xt's. Instead of selling back the 1070's, I'm now wondering why not use them all? I have 6 1070's (2 MSI, 2 EVGA, 2 Gigabyte) and 7 5600xt's (2 ASRock, 2 XFX, 1 ASUS, 1 Red Devil, 1 Sapphire). I've seen and read people use many different cards at once, but there are issues with the BIOS and how would I control multiple different OC/Undervolt settings?

How much of a pita will it be to get these all up and running? I'm using an ASRock H110 Pro BTC+ with 13 pcie slots.

For PSU's my original plan (before I added so many more gpu's) was to link 2 750w P2's together, but at my disposal I have 3 identical EVGA 750w P2's and 1 EVGA 850w G2

Did I just dig myself into a hole? Should I start trying to swap out cards to get a like-for-like setup? Do I need to go a different route with the PSU's? Is there a good walkthru guide on YouTube for a mixed card set up? (I learn better by watching, in addition to reading).

Any advice is greatly appreciated. If there's info I left out for you to offer advice, let me know and I'll add it to the post.

    Cheers

Been mining on my card during downtimes (just casual browsing, youtube) since this is my only card. Achieving 90MH/s on Phoenix miner with 69%PL, -200Core, +800 Mem at 215W average. Anyone using similar card mind sharing your stats?

One out of six cards stops after mining for a while

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 07:04 PM PST

As the subject says, I start up my 6 matched card RX580 rig and the time varies but after a couple hours...sometimes six.....sometimes 24...one of the cards stops mining and my hash rate drops by 1/6th b/c of the offline card. Should I just check the risers and usb cables or is there any log file (phoenixminer) where I can see what card stopped and what the problem is? Thanks

GPU Positioning in mid tower case

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 11:12 PM PST

I currently have a 3080, looking at getting a 3060ti to add for mining as well as 3080, just wondering what'd make more sense

Have the 3080 in topslot, and have the end fan free (3060ti 2 fan design, 3080 3 fan) and then part of the middle 3080 fan free as the pass through cooling

Or would it make more sense to have the 3060ti at top, 3080 bottom so the best performing card has unrestricted airflow?

Will be looking to expand later and get a proper mining rig but for now?

Has anyone powered a riser with EVGA 1000w G5 6 pin from the PSU?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 11:08 PM PST

I've looked at a few pinouts and confirmed with a multimeter. The 6 pin output has the 12v, 5v, and 3.3v, and 2 grounds in kind of a V shape. I tested the 8 pin to dual 6 pin (stock cable) and it puts out 3x 12v and 3 grounds in their respective rows. I've successfully powered the riser with this one. Basically, I'm about to put in a 4th GPU and will have to pull my 3 current cards off the mobo and go to risers without any spare PCI-e slots. I can provide all the specs, but I don't believe that'll help my riser-powering problem. Any help is appreciated.

    Holy Convoluted Crap...

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 02:46 AM PST

Just to preface this post - I did look at the sidebar; I did follow through some of the wiki; I googled my heart out...etc etc etc.. and before someone points out "that card is junk/get a new card/go away/mod! delete this stupid post" .. I just want some basic info.

Everywhere I've looked, the info I've come up with is either A) outdated; or B) no one gives a simple straight answer.

SO. To begin. The card in question (1050TI .. yes I know.. you don't have to say it) is just a card that I, like a lot of others before me.. had lying around. My main card is an EVGA 1070 SC Black, I do not want to use for GPU mining. No real reason other than I'm always at my PC, gaming/browsing/youtube etc .. I just so happened to think; "Oh, I've never really dipped into crypto-mining before. I wonder....

    Just to explain:

The 1050TI came from a really cheap build I gave to a coworker. That coworker borked the HDMI output (he was giving the PC to another co-worker; to which I replaced with a slightly older card for 2nd co-worker to use in PC), and frankly I don't need it to display anything. It still works (tested via Display Port) but I've no use other than .. maybe mining some cheap crypto?

If you haven't figured out by now.. I am 100% new to this. I've dabbled in a little research here, and there.. but never really had the hardware capable. It's been YEARS since then.. like.. back when BTC was less than 7k iirc. Maybe cheaper, idk.

My thoughts are .. I have this 1050TI that really won't make more than 70$ on the second hand market, probably less... I don't care about the excess power usage... Just want to give the card one last 'hoo-rah' before it completely dies; whenever that may be.. and even in the case mining kills it.

I already went through a bunch of outdated material, saying to 'mine Ethereum!' .. wasted a good 30 minutes of my life, but I digress...

Just to cut to the chase..

What can/should I mine with it? << No need to fully explain HOW, just the 'what' part. I'm capable of holding my own hand in research to figure out the set-up, and use. Already set up with CoinBase; all verified etc etc..

Again.. idgaf about electricity used, or generally how much I'm going to make per day.. BUT - I would like to make as much as I can. Why not? Maybe something with a good trade rate (or possible trade rate, if said currency fluctuates often..either way) that might make me.. idk.. $10 in a month...hell, even $3 is good, in my opinion. IDC. I'm just spitballing. If I can rake in 20$ in a year just messing around, trade, use, save, whatever.. it's some fun experience, and a goofy experiment to play around with.

Maybe this will push me to invest further down the road.

The 'getting into gpu-crypto-mining' scene is just so.. flooded. Convoluted, as the post title says.. I'm lost, and just need someone to say 'Hey, this currency, or this currency might make you a few cents a day with that crap GPU, give it a shot.'

Apologies if I seemed a little brash in my explanation, and questioning.. Just a little aggravated with how much content I've gone through to only end up with negative results. Lmao.

Thanks ahead of time. Feel free to ask any questions that might be needed. Cheers.

Safe to power RX 580 with SATA to 6pin PCI-E riser and 8pin PCI-E connector?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2020 08:57 AM PST

I know that there are multiple threads regarding using SATA powered PCI-E risers but I'm still unsure if it's regarded as safe or not for my setup.

I have a 6x RX 580 GPU mining rig. I'm powering all six GPUs with 3x 12pin to two 6+2pin PCIe connectors. The risers are powered via SATA to 6-pin connectors (two per SATA line).

If I understand correctly, each 8pin (6+2) connector should be able to supply the GPUs with 150W respectively. This is plenty more than the 80-90W that each GPU is currently drawing. Is there still a risk that the GPUs will try to draw more than the 54W from the PCI-E risers (which is what a single SATA connector is rated for)?
