A few (hopefully) simple ELI5 questions for PoS

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 12:01 PM PST

I'm having a hard time finding answers for a few basic questions I have about ETH2.0 PoS in a non-technical language. Could someone either help me answer these or guide me to a good place to find the answers? Here goes:

    1. How does a non-technical person go about and stake ETH, without screwing something up? Step guides appreciated...
    2. Does running a validator node require special equipment, or can it be done equally good from a spare laptop? What is the best way to do it?
    3. Is it a good idea to stake all the ETH you have, assuming one is a hodler anyway? If not, why?
    4. How/where is it possible to oversee the "performance" of your validator node? I know there are penalties for downtime and rewards for the opposite, but where can this be monitored?

    Thanks an advance!

    Is eWasm still a thing?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 11:03 AM PST

I remember being really excited years ago about being able to create smart contracts in more developed languages with a broader developer base.

But haven't really seen anything recently about it. Is it abandoned?

As a VERY junior dev who is a starting to learn web development but has a strong interest in crypto software engineering. What are the next steps I should take to become employed as a crypto software engineer?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 01:39 PM PST

What courses, tutorials, books could I use to learn the technical aspects of this trade? And how could I position myself to get hired as a junior? Are there groups I can join once my skills grow? OSS projects to work on with others? I'm a newb to all of this so please go easy if these questions are dumb.

Eth 2 issues, and: Unlikely Eth2 Deposit Contract target is going to be met by Nov. 24

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 12:35 PM PST

I don't see how we are going to get 16,384 validators by December 1st, nevermind 7 days prior to that.

The first day, we were getting an average of ~40 validators added every hour. But on the second day it slowed to about ~10. You need an average of 35 validators added per hour to reach the necessary validators by Nov 24th. The amount of people joining are almost always higher on the beginning than later on.

    We're at ~1200 validators out of 16,384

~10/hour average = Target reach by January

    ~20/hour average = Mid-December

Others have said the similar thing as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/job2y0/whats_the_incentive_to_deposit_in_the_eth_20/

Personally the significant roadblock to me staking is that it'll be locked, unable to take out any eth until Phase 1.5, and who knows when that is? This is in addition to all the other problems such as having the right setup to get it working, and having good enough uptime.* They talk about Phase 2 as early as 2021, and they are way too optimistic. I can belive they'll eventually get there, but significant launches have took at least a year. Software development teams are always super off with their development projections.

Others are also worried about similar issues.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/jod64y/whats_the_incentive_to_deposit_my_32_eth_now_vs/

Optimism is necessary, but we seem to be way beyond this. It's all about hype, and reaching $4000+. Sounds nice, but actual development is needed to get there.

I'm worried of the possibility of turning out to be DAO 2.0. You are incentivizing validators using monetary schemes yet we gotta go against many difficult variables? And who knows how much it'll fluctuate within that time? Without being locked I could trade for gains for example.

*I participated in the testnet. I tried for about 1.5 months then stopped. Out of the 1.5 months trying to stake on the testnet, I was only able to get attestations for less than 7 days. Days with profitability were only 3 out of all. Perhaps because I use HDD, but I asked about that on discord and no one talked about that. And to get any attestations I remember more often than not having to restart client every few hours.

Granted, I used Nimbus for client diversity. The difficulty of setting up a node is quite high. The difficulty of actually getting it attested is really, really high.

Recommendations for best ETH contract/transaction runtime debugger? (breakpoints)

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 11:25 AM PST

I am debugging some contract errors that occur at runtime and I've been using truffle debug but I find it painful to use as compared to more traditional IDE debugging tools with a UI and breakpoints which can be set in the source files themselves, etc.

Are there any good tools our there for debugging ETH contracts at runtime? I gave https://remix.ethereum.org/ a shot as it looked promising but when debugging my transaction none of the breakpoints were getting hit. Appreciate any suggestions.

Ethereum Vs. Polkadot for building an application

    NFT representing a code piece

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 01:02 PM PST

    Hey folks,

I have been brainstorming if there is anyway to represent a piece of code, let's say print('HelloWorld') in terms of Non-Fungible Token(NFT).

Or what would be the smart way to uniquely tonkenize the code?

Question about payment of taxes because of crypto (ETH)

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 09:51 AM PST

Let's say I made $5000 after taxes in Chile.

I have double nationality (italian and chilean), and currently live in Italy as for 2 months.

I want to transfer that money in a form of crypto to Italy because it's much faster (international bank transfers take 3 full days to process).

I buy the equivalent of $5000 in ETH.

I sell the equivalent of ETH in EURO worth $5500 (there was a gain) and transfer that money to my bank account in Italy through coinbase.

Do i need to pay taxes because of this? In which country? Chile or Italy? How many taxes? Does only the $500 in gain pay taxes?

    Thanks crypto gods.
