In 1970 1oz of gold was 35$. For 35$ you could buy a nice suit and a bicycle. Today 1oz of gold is $1900, still enough to buy a nice suit and a bicycle. 35$ today on the other hand is enough to buy 2 pizzas. 2 pizzas in 2010 would set you back 10,000 BTC, today just 0.0027btc.

I have bought bitcoin every day for the past 4 years - my journey buying wise is done

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 01:43 AM PDT

Tonight I hit my goal I wanted from the get go. I am more than comfortable with the position, and its locked away for my kids in cold storage. Literally every day didn't miss one. It taught me discipline and experiencing highs and lows. I won't even think about selling till 2028 at the earliest but hopefully if my job holds up and other investments do okay, i wont even have to sell the treasure that is bitcoin.

Enjoy the journey, ill sit back and watch now for a bit.

PSA: Reminder that Github is not the only Bitcoin Source Repo

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 09:33 PM PDT

Github (@Microsoft) is a great site, and they have, for the most part, been pretty laissez-faire about repos that the "powers that be" might object to. But any skeptical mind should always "what if" anything as important as the Bitcoin-Core codebase. Assuming you've done all the basic stuff like build-from-source and run your own node, now might be a good time to add some mirrors to your list of git remotes.

The best mirror I can think of is probably the onion mirror maintained by @laanwj (github). If there are some others that are replicated regularly, please help me collect the list.

If we "start from scratch" I'll add the github-git as the default remote named "origin" and add the onion-git as the remote named "onion". Of course you can change the names if they are too close for your liking.

Initially clone the repo from github (github-git -> "origin")

    # This will create "origin" and checkout "master" git clone https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin.git cd bitcoin

Add the Onion-Git as one of our remotes

o_host=nxshomzlgqmwfwhcnyvbznyrybh3gotlfgis7wkv7iur2yj2rarlhiad.onion git remote add onion http://$o_host/git/bitcoin.git git config --local --add remote.onion.proxy "socks5h://127.0.0.1:9050"

Create a branch "onion-master" that tracks our new remote

git fetch onion git checkout -b onion-master onion/master

Go back to "origin/master" and compare

git checkout master git branch -vv # Should see origin/master and onion/master at the same commit

Now if Github does any shenanigans with the repo, you can pull from the onion repo. It should be noted that the onion repo is read-only, but I'm sure if anything goes wierd there will be about a half dozen new repos pop up. But at least this one is an authoritative source.

What is the oldest Node that could still connect to the network (v0.9.1)?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 07:50 PM PDT

The oldest nodes I've found to date have been v0.9.1. Based on protocol rules and backward compatibility, what is the oldest node that would be allowed on the network? Was there something between 0.8.0 and 0.9.1 that broke older clients?

I'm interested in the old clients as an educational exercise. v0.1.5 is only 20k lines and very simple to understand. v0.9.1 is 71k lines and much harder to get my head around. v0.20.1 is 200k lines and well beyond what I can simply passively study.

Any thoughts on creating a bitcoin time machine? Any ideas on how to get something like that off the ground? Could I just dd the genesis block by hand for those older version and just set up a VLAN with two nodes?

I had a dream last night...

    Posted: 27 Oct 2020 12:10 AM PDT

Last night, I had a dream that started with this blast of light. And somehow, I realized I travelled back to 2012. I only had one thing on my mind, to buy bitcoin. I checked the price of BTC. It was $4.88. I told myself, before I travel back to present, I want to buy as much BTC as possible. I had $16K in my checking account at that time and was able to get a $20K bank loan. After 0.6% fees, I bought 7,302 BTC on Mt. Gox and then transferred it to a cold wallet.

When trying to encourage several of my classmates (I was in college back then), they all dismissed me. They thought I was trying to scam them. NOBODY wanted to hear me out no matter what I said. I told a number of people. They were more interested in their homework and their social media than a classmate trying to sell them bitcoin. By the end of the day, I saw another blast of light and realized I was back in 2020.

Trying to get into Bitcoin Programming, Can I get some help?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 04:35 PM PDT

Hi, I'm a newcomer. The other day, I followed some instructions and ran my first Bitcoin full node on a server!

I'm looking to to do the basic stuff like create HD wallets, fetch UTXOs from all the addresses, and send transactions. My programming language preference is Python.

Can I get a link to the Bitcoin APIs/documentation that I can call to do such a thing?

I tried Bitcoinlib because it seems simple but it goes through third parties and querying them every time I send a transaction is too slow.

    Anyways, looking for some help!

What's the best way to trade cryptocurrencies in India?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2020 10:57 PM PDT

I am a noob when it comes to cryptocurrencies. I tried creating an account on Coinbase. For some reason, I was not able to add a payment method.

Suggest some good platform tailored for Indians?
