ELI5: ETH 2.0 Validator ‘online’ question

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 08:02 AM PDT

Hey all, I'm interested in a succinct explanation of what it means to be "online" as a validator in ETH 2.0. If I stake the 32 ETH and my validator mode is set up on a Mac mini desktop machine with an Ethernet connection, what do I have to do to ensure I'm always "online" so that I don't get penalized?

This sounds like a simple question but I have not been able to get a simple answer. Do I have to set it up so that the machine never goes to sleep? Are there modem settings I need to configure? Etc etc etc.

Thanks in advance for the clarity!

Heard rumors about potentially increasing block size/tweaking other variables to mitigate the high fees in the short term

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 05:33 PM PDT

I've read a few rumors elsewhere that there's some discussion to increase some of the throughput affecting variables to mitigate the current fee situation, is there any weight to this, if so, how far out could we expect that?

I know a lot of the current development focus is on ETH2.0, but a stopgap in the meantime to help scale would certainly be appreciated.

Let's increase the gas limit to 16M gas per Block

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 03:17 PM PDT

This will allow more transactions to fit in a block and reduce fee pressure.

Uncle rates are still relatively low so this would be safe to do

I built a (very simple) VR blockexplorer as an educational/research tool & I'm looking for a partner to build out a v2. Not linking the v1 since I don't want to get flagged as self-promoting (it's on Steam) but it currently includes three different "worlds," one of which is Ethereum.

The current version (seen above) queries the Etherscan + Ethplorer + Blockcypher APIs & allows the user to "inspect" a confirmed block. The large white section represents the vol. of all the ETH (sending/trading) confirmed in the block; the other, colored layers represent the vol. of token transactions (in eth) confirmed in the block. When the user hovers over a layer they can learn about each token & the respective project.

It has trickle of purchases & an inactive/decent IG (5k followers), but I'm really interested in cranking up the immersiveness on the 2.0 & establishing it as the *the* VR blockexplorer. I feel comfortable doubling-down on the Unity/VR frontend & marketing but I'm honestly aggressively mediocre at the backend of the stack.

Whether it's opening sockets from a 3rd-party service or from a node we're self-hosting, I'd love to partner up with someone. The Eth world has the most functionality & imo offers the most educational value so I thought I'd post here first.

Won't waste your time, primarily looking for a part-time partner interested in rev sharing; however, I'm open to hourly contracting too just won't be near market rates.

Happy to answer any additional questions & mods I apologize if this breaks any rules. Already posted in /ethdev but unfortunately didn't get much traction.

    Cheers

What to look for when reviewing a new coin/contract/project ect before putting money in.

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 01:42 AM PDT

    Hi,

Basic question, but I think a lot of people don't really consider/critically think about a project before putting their money in. Especially now with the whole yield farming bubble we're in...any time you see .finance, they through money in.

With me I look for the amount of coins in circulation/ generated. Whether they are bomb token ect. I look to see if there any any one wallet with a huge % of coins in, as to try and avoid a pump and dump (but its more difficult now due to pools), check to see if the contract has reviews/been audited.

What are some thing you look for before putting money in?
