Mark Lundeberg on BitcoinABC's controversial proposal to correct historical drift. “Drift correction should default to 'no' unless there is a strong reason, simply because some accumulated drift has until now been a natural and widely accepted part of every DAA (even ASERT).”

Hi. I want to give my opinion on a few things.

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 02:25 PM PDT

    Hi everyone.

Some of you guys may, or may not have, noticed I've been kinda absent lately, and rather quiet.

Personally, I've taken some time off from being deep into the community to kind of refresh and clear my mind. I've still been working on various things such as the Bitcoin.com Wallet, and Bitcoin Cash Register, but I have not been active in developer discussions on Reddit, Telegram, Twitter, etc.

I've been working on a Minecraft mod like I used to when I was a teenager, and I passed my MSF course too recently.

Anyway, to the point of the post:

After my recent break, I've come back to see a lot of DAA discussion. During my break I kinda saw some DAA discussion in the DAA telegram group since I have to implement whatever new DAA we decide upon into bitcoincashj.

I haven't been following it too closely, just saw people working rather constructively. Jonathan Toomim with his proposal, and various people looking it over. Amaury asking specific questions about certain parts of the algorithm, and so on. Nothing too abnormal.

Now, seemingly out of nowhere Amaury proposes his own DAA. Nothing wrong with that, even if out of nowhere. I personally don't have an opinion on either DAA, just so we're clear.

My problem is with how the community is just falling apart, and with how we look unprofessional and childish. If we're ever to be taken seriously, shit like this is turning rather critical discussion of the protocol and our community into a joke. Practically telling the outside world that we do not even take ourselves seriously. If our goal is peer-to-peer cash for the world, then we should take ourselves seriously.

Then there is shit like this in Telegram, which is along the same line as Shammah's "me-me" competition. And then imaginary's little jab at the IFP with Amaury's Grasberg proposal here, which only reignites drama of the IFP in combination with the current DAA drama.

I'm guilty myself of being "childish" and such in the past, which is why I took a break, cleared my mind, relaxed a bit, and came back to check on things only to see it's gotten worse.

I just want peer-to-peer electronic cash for the world.

Any reason drift shouldn't be dismissed outright simply because it's wayyyyyy too late to start talking about this, and there's been plenty opportunity to bring up drift as an important part of the DAA long before now?

    Too many Development 'SURPRISES'

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 02:39 PM PDT

We have a roadmap, we have satoshis white paper, we have public zoom meetings and public source code and semi public telegram channels...

Therefore why are there SO MANY dramatic code surprises?!

If there are novel ideas like IFP or 'Correction to historical drift' why aren't these ideas communicated in more channels.

Investors expect structured planning on these changes, not bright idea development SURPRISES coded at the last minute.

Note that these SURPRISES even surprise well respected involved developers of various implementations. If these attentive folks are surprised, imagine the surprise in the minds of casual whale investors.

Less SURPRISES, and more transparent PLANNNING please

    D R I F T . . . .

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 07:44 PM PDT

I have searched, never read even a mediocre reason for drift.

Only thing I could dream up is that someone is trying to get btc to have a reward change Before BCH.

Maybe I am missing this, but wt#? Why the push? There has to be ulterior motives? I see absolutely ZERO benefits. Why waste any heartbeats on this?

    1. Has the community asked for this?
    2. Have users asked for this?
    3. Have Exchanges asked for this?
    4. Have miners asked for this?
    5. Has SLP asked for this?
    6. Does Avalanche need this?
    7. Was this on the BCH roadmap?
    8. Do BCH Smart contracts need this? ?????

Edit: Lots of discussion in this reddit about a split, split is bad. I would rather see us add this circlejerk to the upgrade than see a split.

I worry this DRIFT stuff is about exactly that: creating a split.

Maybe I am being harsh, I dont intend to. I know everything seems easy unless you are the one doing all the work. Not being critical of those doing all the work, just wanting to see some justification for drift. (Or drop it)

And btw, what is the rush? The edaa has went thru 4-5 upgrades with No discussion.

Decentralization is messy, but attractive and valuable.

It's the reason why you see all those BSV and BTC supporters and shills, as well as government agents in BCH.

They come here to play. Because it is more fun. Start appreciating that life is messy but always finds a way to evolve.

Trust (in the process), but verify.

Bitcoin Cash is currently in a normal governance shaping process.

    Posted: 28 Jul 2020 06:39 AM PDT

On the first glance, it looks like there is an ABC versus what other group dynamic going on. But it is a normal governance shaping process. We have still great business adoption, the best user experience among all bitcoin versions and great diverse developer teams.

For me personally it leaves a bad taste, especially in an open source project, when one developer (group) is plowing through a sizeable number of community members. We had this with Greg and Blockstream.

Amaury is using a good tactic and applies his experience from the BTC/BCH fork: keep coding/moving on while being quiet. It reduces attack vectors and keeps his opponents restless. Fair approach and he has the freedom to do that. It's open source 🤷‍♂️

Now, what about the unhappy ones?

Simple: convince every possible BCH stakeholder (first miners, second economic actors) that the ABC approach isn't good because of Greg/Blockstream 2.0 risk or what ever reasons. What I see is that ABC/Amaury won't compromise/negotiate.

What happens if these BCH stakeholders love ABC so much, they won't run other BCH clients? As a developer, you can plan a fork and you as a user can sell/keep both coins to wait out the storm (a very good reason to buy BCH if you expect a fork). Right now the best approach for ABC opponents is to convince BCH stakeholders and get a public statement about their choice .

But there is a true story as well: there is no appetite for a third fork
