The COVID-19 panic is being used to encroach on free speech.

A quick google search is instructive. China is, of course, leading the charge in censoring dissenting views, and other Southeast Asian countries are following suit. The UK is heading down the same road, and Iran is arresting independent, "critical" reporting on the virus.

    This is a serious problem.

If you have a hunch that somehow crypto should be able to protect us from this danger, you're right: Ethereum has already facilitated bypassing such censorship in China. As Forbes reports, the Chinese government has been censoring an article discussing various aspects of the COVID-19 outbreak--but it is now safely stored directly on Ethereum.

However, accessing this data is not simple, and posting it in the first place surely required obscure knowledge of Ethereum's inner workings and lots of trial-and-error.

SmokeSignal elmininates this difficulty, exposing unstoppably free speech to the end-user.

The conversation has already started. (If you can't follow .eth links, use our non-ENS mirror.)

Any SmokeSignal message can be read by anyone in a single click. This can be a .eth permalink or a non-ENS mirror link.

If you have a web3 wallet like MetaMask, ETH for gas, and DAI for burning, you can create your own SmokeSignal message. Once mined, you'll get a permalink like this one (non-ENS mirror).

Feel free to burn a tiny amount of DAI for now, but as SmokeSignal gets more use, interfaces like ours will begin to filter out low-burn messages. By burning more DAI, an author can signal a higher level of seriousness and expect more visibility.

It's high time for crypto to make moves on the global stage, and the clumsy failures of governments during this crisis have left the stage wide open.

SmokeSignal is one such move. Join the conversation (non-ENS mirror), and let's coordinate the next.

I built a Dapp to automate Dollar Cost Averaging from DAI->ETH

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 08:21 AM PDT

As the title says, I built a tool that allows you to buy a constant amount of ETH (with DAI) at regular intervals. For example, if you decide to buy 50DAI worth of ETH every week, dca.land will send 50 DAI from your wallet to Uniswap, swap them with ETH at the current price & send them back to your wallet, and will do this once per week.

This is powered by two components:

    1. a smart contract which gathers your preferences (amount to buy and interval), and can transfer DAI from your wallet to Uniswap & return the ETH back to your wallet
    2. a network of relayers that are incentivized to execute the smart contract in exchange for a compensation of the gas cost they spent, plus a 0.2% reward fee.

I built this as a side project for personal use and I've been using it to automate ETH purchases for a while, but I though it may be useful to others too. Right now I'm also providing the relayer service, however anyone can become a relayer really.

So far the system has proved reliable, however consider this as a beta version. Also, the smart contract HAS NOT been audited, so test it at your own risk. If you have feedback or thought I'd love to hear them!

    Noob question: ETH 2.0 hardfork?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:18 AM PDT

    Good day,

I have never done much with ETH besides than playing some dAPP games.
I was wondering if investing in ETH before 2.0 comes out is a good idea or not. I have some questions regarding that. Especially because of the 2.0 upgrade: I do not know how this upgrade will be done.
Will ETH fork and I then have coins on both ETH1 and ETH2 chains?
Will it be a completely new blockchain?
I am asking these questions because I would want to invest long term but don't want to end up with near worthless coins when 2.0 comes.

Last question: Would holding via MetaMask be better than holding in an exchange or the other way around? Exchanges do coin updates themselves and credit users the forked coins automatically while I might run into problems with MetaMask with that.

Thanks kindly for every helpful answer!

BTC++ by PieDAO.org live on mainnet!

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 05:09 AM PDT

Hey all, PieDAO.org just launched BTC++ on mainnet, a weighted allocation of different BTC representations on the Ethereum network Twitter thread

Some background: There is a race for bridging Bitcoin to the Ethereum Network. a number of projects have made steps in that direction with adopting solutions that go from 100% custodian services to mechanism design that might result in economic finality for a trustless swap of BTC<->ETH.

Each project has different tradeoffs in terms of security, even assuming the assumptions are correct the risk associated with bugs on the system makes holding those tokens risky in isolation.

Proposal Deploy a BTC Pie which holds a set of different representations of Bitcoin in the Ethereum network called BTC++ deployed as a Balancer Pool.

Benefits for users Users who want to have controlled exposure to different BTC on Ethereum don't have to deal with complicated and/or expensive rebalancing procedures.

Holders of WBTC/pBTC/imBTC/sBTC… who have those tokens sitting idly in a wallet can now put them to work so they can effortlessly earn fees.

Why Balancer pools Balancer is a nascent ecosystem with significant improvements compared to other AMM out there. They are a week away to launch to the masses and there is currently no BTC pool available. Claiming the first mover advantage and bootstrapping that ecosystem would have several benefits:

BTC++ could easily become the largest pool in the Balancer ecosystem, which means most of the trades would be routed through the BTC++ pool.

Having a pool with only BTC tokens it's more convenient for liquidity providers than Uniswap as there is no ETH exposure and the impermanent loss it's minimized.

BTC++ can become a core asset for future Pie that need exposure to Bitcoin.
