What does "open interest" mean? Posted: 02 Feb 2020 12:07 PM PST I read a couple of articles which predict a bitcoin crash due to a historical trend associated with bitcoin's "open interest" hitting $1B. What does that mean? I did some googling and it transpires that open interest is a trading term in general use. It isn't to do with bitcoin specifically, but it relates to bitcoin in so far as bitcoin is a financial asset that is traded. Even after reading some definitions, I find that I know exactly as much about what it means as I did before. Practically nothing. The definitions I read talked about open, unsettled contracts. What does this mean? The obvious answer, from my limited perspective, is a trade that was initiated by one party but not completed, and held in limbo. I don't believe that is how crypto currency trades can work, so I must be totally misunderstanding the point. Does someone care to enlighten me? Explain it like I'm a five year old.
