Just a friendly reminder, new people are not experts

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 07:57 PM PST

We may be at the start of the next bullrun. We may be at a fakeout and test lower resistance. It doesn't matter. New people come here because this sub is /r/cryptocurrency, which is likely the second place anyone new to this market will look. Likely the first being bitcoin sub.

This place can be extremely toxic, especially if someone sees some rando coin pump and ask about it.

We need to remember that before we knew anything, we knew nothing. I dont care if you joined in 2012 or 2020, you likely came here to learn.

It is in all our best interest to treat people with respect. To answer their questions. To help them. To make them feel welcome. Because if the first impression someone has of this "exciting new world changing technology" is a sub full of autists, then they will nope the fuck out of here and cement the position in their mind that crypto is for losers in basements and the world shouldn't take this technology seriously.

So, if you are here to make money, fine. If you are here to chill and shoot the shit with people in the daily discussion, fine. But remember that we are the face and first impression of this technology, and if we want adoption, then we need to be respectful human beans.

To me, it's more serious than just mooning. I believe the human race needs a financial system overhaul, or we are just fucking done for. Every broken thing on the planet, every existential threat from insect collapse to plastic waste to climate change all is exasperated by a financial system of constant growth that is fundamentally at odds with living on a finite planet.

Be fucking cool, and cut the shit.

If you're not using Brave/BAT... why not?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 04:20 PM PST

Brave blocks ads for you and is super fast. You can view Brave ads and earn crypto (BAT).

You can also now withdraw crypto. It does require KYC, but it works very well. You can send it straight to Coinbase (or wherever).

I'm not paid/endorsed by Brave/BAT in any way. I'm just quite impressed now.

    Fuck Coinbase

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 06:47 PM PST

I've had a Coinbase account for a 2 years + now. Used it 10 times max in my life to send money to exchanges and my own wallet in 2017-2018. Recently I tried to use it again and could not buy anything. Contacted staff they told me my account is basically useless. Suspended from trading... Not able to give me a reason? Really? That's ridiculous. There's obviously a reason...

Iota now banning people for anything negative said on the sub

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 03:51 AM PST

I've been a supporter of iota since 2017. Recently I lost some faith in the project but still hold. Now after the wallet issue I've commented that this is a real problem and instead I've been banned. Apparently silencing people's concerns is their new approach.

Subreddit Improvement Proposal (SIP) for r/cryptocurrency: onboarding resources, request AMAs, surveys, cultural exchanges, events calendar.

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 12:49 AM PST

Hi guys, I've been researching decentralized movements for the last few years from cryptos to HK pro-democracy movement, and wrote a bunch of articles about the global digital resistance. The latest article is focused on best Reddit's practices, because Reddit is essential for decentralized governance, since exposure of the information here depends on the quality and relevance of the content, rather than how many followers an author has.

I've decided to start a discussion about specific practices from other subreddits that can be implemented at r/cryptocurrency in order to increase engagement, retention, and potentially attract more new users.

Here is a list of some of them:

(all examples with images and links can be found in the latest article)

    1. Onboarding resources. Every day thousands of people visit this sub for the first time, so some onboarding material would be helpful. It can be placed in the top menu or in the sidebar. An onboarding material can be a post, a Reddit wiki page, or a link to some external web page. Feel free to suggest a good external resource.

    2. AMAs are a great way to increase engagement and bring more people to a sub. Mods can approach crypto influencers of their choice or add a button to a sidebar like "request an AMA" using Google forms. AMAs are also a good way to inform a public about unfolding events. For example, an AMA with Dropbit team, whose CEO Larry Harmon faces up to 30 years in jail for working with mixing services, would be informative. Feel free to suggest your own candidates.

    3. Surveys. Conducting anonymous surveys can increase engagement and attract some attention from news outlets. A survey can be conducted with Google Forms or other third party solutions like Survey Monkey and be presented in a Reddit post. Feel free to suggest questions, dates, and other tools for a survey.

    4. Cultural exchange events can be organized with other subs that share similar interests or face similar challenges. For example, r/HongKong (437K members) can be a good fit, because both HK pro-democracy movement and cryptocurrencies rely on the decentralized governance with a very complex infrastructure. Two other subs I'd recommend are r/privacytoolsIO (73K members) and r/privacy (673K members) because they also advocate for a high privacy. Feel free to suggest other subs for cultural exchange and please explain why they would be a good fit.

    5. Event calendar. All upcoming events (AMAs, surveys, cultural exchanges, etc.) can be listed in the sidebar.

If you have any other suggestions, then that's a good opportunity to let us know.

If you're interested in decentralized movements, you can also find some practical suggestions and tips in an open-source manual decentralized activism.

P.S. This is my first Subreddit Improvement Proposal (SIP), but later I'll create similar posts with different suggestions in other crypto-related or activism-related subs.

    Tax Season & Cryptos

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 05:51 PM PST

I'm curious to know how other traders import their tax information into their W2s, I have 5 different centralized exchange trading account as well as several DEXs I trade on. I do a lot of swing trading so my trades are somewhere in the thousands for 2019. I'm trying to input the .csv file and it won't accept it, now it wants me to input everything by hand...

If they seriously expect ppl to input ever single trade they're high, especially for day traders.

    Chinese miners and Coronavirus outlook?

    Posted: 14 Feb 2020 02:20 AM PST

Considering most bitcoin mining happens in Sichuan, a neighboring province of Wuhan, how will this affect coal mining (energy) and crypto mining? If the Chinese economy hits a great wall. Shouldn't transaction fees blow up?

If a real pandemic hits the world I feel all markets will have a recession. I'm more curious on your thoughts. I expect moonboys to discount me, but let's hear from some real investors.

    God bless and stock up

Serious question that I can't find an answer to anywhere: Why is Orchid (OXT) on Coinbase?

    Posted: 13 Feb 2020 05:11 PM PST

All of the other coins Coinbase offers are well-known and have a high market cap, but Orchid is the exception. I didn't even know it existed until I saw it on Coinbase! Is it supposed to be a super high market cap coin whenever it gets a market cap or do they have some sort of deal with Coinbase? It seems odd to me.
