An Alt that has Actually Made Real Progress

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 03:08 PM PST

The depth of conversation has gone down considerably in this subreddit. Links are primarily weak conversations about movement of price nearly exclusively. So I'm going to see if we can get some real conversation going.

The 2017 rush got a lot of people interested in crypto and it was a hopeful time for alts. I had been paying attention to bitcoin for years but I'll admit that it wasn't until late 2016/early 2017 I realized coinbase was adding alts (If I remember correctly) and it brought my attention to the market.

It was summer 2017 that brought the bitcoin cash fork and shortly after we all remember the rush. Over that year I was really amazed at the amount of alts there were- their potential was unlimited and businesses around the world scrambled to get into crypto in some form.

Bitconnect, onecoin, bitcoin gold's recent 51% attack, I mean kik messenger almost got shuttered for theirs - these are some of the biggest legacies of the altmarket after the crypto rush.

True, it hasn't been all bad. Bitcoin got itself legitimately recognized for better or for worse by the global financial community - like it or not Bitcoin proved it mattered. Ethereum has been bearing fruit. I'll admit I'm partial to playing God's Unchained. Bitcoin cash gets an honorable mention for their spirited effort on trying to get business involvement. Tether and Ripple have filled some niches along the edges but don't really define the alt movement as a whole.

I know that in 2017 I wasn't the only one who thought surely there would be blockchain revolution but aside from the little I mentioned in the previous paragraph the alt market really is not much different than 3 years ago. Outside of Bitcoin and Ethereum I'm wondering what alt has actually made real progress in some meaningful way that it deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as bitcoin and ethereum. 3 years and billions of dollars later we should see something tangible- can anyone share really anything?

I get that things take time but this is an unusually long time without seeing another globally viable coin that is going to make an impact. I think some of this has to do with the fact that too many people are aware of crypto now that they can't pass the 51% attack mark if they ever got powerful enough. Bitcoin slipped through because it was the first and ethereum is still being centrally controlled. It seems like the best we get these days are updates about technical improvements to a coin that seems to be on an eternal treadmill to never breaking out.

But maybe I'm wrong - what are your theories?
