    CashWeb extended!

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 11:31 AM PST

Hello! It's been awhile, but this is a follow-up to the post I made some time ago regarding an immutable file storage solution I put together for Bitcoin Cash.

I've been working on-and-off on a WebAssembly Javascript port so that the CashWeb tools may be utilized by anyone with a browser, rather than just developers. When I got a basic version of that working, I went ahead and slapped together a browser extension to make the whole thing relatively straightforward—this is now available on Firefox and Chrome. The project is open source and available on Github.

The CashWeb Browser Buddy allows you to make queries from the address bar in Firefox (of the form web+cash://<cashweb-id>), or from within the extension pop-up in Chrome (unfortunately, Chrome doesn't yet support custom protocol handlers for extensions). Also, text of the form web+cash://<something> will be "linkified" (made into a clickable link) if this feature is left enabled. You can also set whether to source your queries from a BitDB node, REST endpoint (much slower), or CashServer (faster, currently less decentralized). When querying from BitDB or REST, your browser is making a series of requests to the specified endpoint, and constructing the file locally as it goes—no need to rely on a CashServer like cashweb.cash! (This is good, because the cloud VM hosting costs are getting pricey—cashweb.cash might not be available much longer.)

One example where this extension might be useful is for attaching documents to SLP tokens—the creator of a token could write immutable specifications/promises for it (maybe regarding dividends?), or otherwise something to make the token stand out. I created a token someSeriousCoin to demo this, which you can check out on a token explorer (with CashWeb BB installed, the document URI should be properly linkified).

Unfortunately, sending files via the extension is not yet supported—there is still no way to do this without running full node software and building the original project from source. If there is enough interest, I will definitely be looking to integrate this into CashWeb BB for the complete package.

    Thanks for checking it out!
