Steve Shadders lied in court, or is a moron, or both (probably) Posted: 16 Aug 2019 09:29 AM PDT At the recent Kleiman-Wright hearing, Steve Shadders, CTO of nChain, testified that Craig Wright tasked him with creating a list of potential addresses that were mined by Wright. According to two different sources apparently present at the hearing (https://twitter.com/KatieAnanina/status/1158396145405693953 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CIjs5WNM3c ), the criteria given to him by Wright were:
The actual list Mr. Shadders made is now publicly available. Mr. Shadders (again, apparently, the official transcript has not been published yet) testified that this task took two weeks to complete, though the actual work was spread out over those two weeks. The actual work time was approximately one week, reportedly. This is insane for a CTO of a crypto-related company. Beyond the unbelievable time frame, it appears he bodged the job in at least two ways. He said criteria number 5 eliminated 68 addresses. I wanted to check his work. As an exercise, I wrote a Java program to recreate the process. I chose Java because that's what Mr. Shadders reportedly said he used. It's not my first language, so I apologise for non-idiomatic usage. Despite my non-familiarity, it took approximately two hours to write and it's under 100 lines of code. It finishes running in under 30 seconds. I did not implement criteria 4 since it was not well-defined, though it should not be difficult to add, and is nonsense anyway, since Satoshi did reuse addresses multiple times. There were zero multi-output coinbases before August 21, 2010, not 68. If the person reporting on the hearing was accurate, was this a mistake or a lie by Mr. Shadders? Also, I ended up with about 24,500 "addresses" as opposed to approximately 27,000 found by Mr. Shadders. There is some question about this, as the latter hearing witness said that Mr. Shadders admitted to a mistake -- a "quirk" -- which would have eliminated 2,700 additional "addresses". Examining the actual list he created more closely, it looks like he included many blocks with nonce values outside of the 0-58 range, so he bodged that, too. I haven't determined if that error fully explains the discrepancy. The conclusion is that the list is rubbish. Whether it's better explained by malice or incompetence is not clear, but either option is bad. [link] [comments] | ||
