    Is PoS really plutocratic?

    Posted: 06 May 2019 02:36 PM PDT

This might be a bit more relevant for DAOs but hear me out.

People are worried that voting/staking is a bad governance structure because it leads to the wealthy having control over the system and just devolves into a plutocracy.

It's understandable to be fearful of a plutocracy, however, real-world examples of plutocratic behavior are very different.

    The difference is symmetry

In the real world, for a company or rich person to bribe/lobby a politician, it doesn't cost them much (relative to their total wealth). This makes it asymmetrical because the plutocrate risks little for the opportunity of a big payoff if the lobbying is successful. And the end result isn't necessarily for the public good, but the sole good of the plutocrate and its shareholders which probably only make up a small percentage of the population.

The entire basis for blockchain to work and grow is by using a coin to create incentives for the well-being of the network. By making users stakeholders (or investors) in the success of the system it becomes self-sustaining.

By definition all stakeholders in the system benefit. A plutocrate likely has the same incentive as a stakeholder; that is to raise the value of the coin because the plutocrate has a lot of wealth at stake. But what's more, is that plutocrates in staking governance models risk just as much money (proportionally) as the poorer people who are staking. This changes their risk profile to a more symmetrical one as opposed to the asymmetrical examples we see in government.

This is very different than a plutocracy IRL, because the citizens that the plutocrates are ruling share little if anything in the success of the plutocrate, citizens aren't necessarily stakeholders. Whereas with blockchain governance, all other people voting for the governance are by definition stakeholders.

TL;DR: incentives of the rich and the poor voters/governors are aligned with blockchain governance by definition making plutocracy a moot point. IRL plutocracy involves rich people taking on little personal risk and then dictating rules for non-stakeholders. The key difference is symmetry and skin in the game. Any choice a blockchain governor dictates affects himself just as much, if not more than the poorer governors.

    Am I missing something here?

Just had 0.9 Ethereum Stolen out of my wallet.

    Posted: 06 May 2019 06:41 PM PDT

Just had my wallet completely emptied of all 0.9 Ethereum I had in it.

I have no idea how they got the means or information to do so. It happened about an hour ago.

    https://etherscan.io/tx/0x482b910db34ede6c053f203443f60e2c1d5309f43f7ecb0dcbbff78a781ecd22

That is the transaction ID, as well as their wallet (0x6999999cb7514446667ca68a0b24ef526d45186c)

If anyone has any tips for how I can move forward. Or anything at all I'd appreciate.

    Stay safe out there guys!

We released a Role Based Access Control contract, please check it out!

    Posted: 06 May 2019 07:28 AM PDT

Hi all, we just released a Role Based Access Control contract and we would be more than happy for you to use it! I'm happy to give a hand if you need some guidance, and I would be equally pleased to receive any feedback.

OpenZeppelin has a set of contracts for implementing Roles as a way of controlling access, but as far as I can see with their approach all roles need to be hard-coded. We wanted something that would allow us to create new roles at runtime and assign them dynamically to structs or tokens, same as you give role-based access to each separate resource everywhere else, from Unix to AWS.

What is the incentive for Proof-of-Stake..

    Posted: 06 May 2019 04:27 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I was hoping to get some guidance from Ethereum experts.

I feel like I have a pretty firm grasp of Proof-of-Work (POW) and am trying to understand Proof-of-Stake (POS) to the same degree.

Boiling down both of these different types of validations, I feel like it is fair to say:

    1. With POW, security is predicated on the incentive to work for the system (as honest nodes). Aka "The race to reward"
    2. With POS security is predicated on the disincentive to work against the system (as dishonest nodes).

What I'm wondering about POS is:

What is the incentive in POS to work for the system as an honest node and lock up a signifiant amount of native funds (for 30 or more days potentially) in hopes of being selected as a validator sometime in the (near?) future?

Thanks in advance for any guidance on this question.

[Wirex app] missing one out of two ether deposits after 24 hrs+

    Posted: 06 May 2019 10:26 AM PDT

I've been a user of Wirex app with no issues in the past. Though yesterday I've made two transfers of one ether each from my ledger to my wirex ether wallet. One of the transactions showed up allmost instantly in my wirex account. But the other still hasn't shown up and it's been over 24 hours.

The two transactions have been made to this contract: https://etherscan.io/address/0xf3f60786ab02b79103d5443764272b6147eff804

These are the two transactions (both have 7396 confirmations):

    https://etherscan.io/tx/0xad3839b2ea5e007f24824cf8bafbc680789583e2e2b29bc8938660a5f4409be8

ONLY transaction 0xad3839b2ea5e007f24824cf8bafbc680789583e2e2b29bc8938660a5f4409be8 shows up in my wirex app.

Helping the homeless w/ crypto day 3 + future plans (you can help/join the team!)

    Posted: 06 May 2019 03:40 PM PDT

This is the first time I'm posting on this subreddit about this, but I've successfully set up a project involving crypto - helping out the homeless with food. Nothing fancy but I set up a website:

    http://cryptohomeless.home.blog

I went out 3 times so far and received a small amount of donations (mainly in bitcoin cash so far)

Just thought it would be cool to accept many different cryptos including ethereum! I posted that I am looking for some help in the most recent post - it can be in the form of sharing the url, joining the food distribution team, or donating some crypto! Regardless, thanks for any support!

    Asset Tokenization Interfaces on Ethereum

    Posted: 06 May 2019 03:28 PM PDT

    Hi Ethereum,

I'm new to the scene here - what are some good interfaces built on Ethereum that allow you to issue and manage assets/tokens on the Ethereum network?

If you must know, I'm interested because of Vitalik's Twitter post to Elon Musk, where he listed "globally accessible financial system" as his #1 use case for Ethereum. This got me excited about ETH - I don't know how outdated my view of Ethereum was, but I had thought it's main intended use case was still for building decentralized applications.

I'm not a developer, but I'd really like to play around with some interfaces on Ethereum that will let me issue tokens and distribute to other wallets. I've mostly been doing this with Stellar, which is great for this but doesn't have nearly the amount of traction that Ethereum does.

    Thanks!

Teaching my little bro finance concept through ERC-721 token trading. School: 0 CryptoCollectibles:1

    Posted: 06 May 2019 02:15 AM PDT

My little brother is a smart, curious teenager who loves sports and collecting stuff (as his big bro does.)

So what do I do, I give him ETH to go on an ERC-721 shopping spree. During the course of his collecting, he is learning about gas fees, trading volumes, market caps and other basic finance concepts.

I'm starting to think cryptocollectibles are the future of both education and analyst training. Give your students/interns/analysts some ETH and have them search for undervalued collectibles. The one whose portfolio appreciates the most at the end of the term, wins the prize.

Is the full PoS blockchain announced to launch on June 30th or is this only a pre-version of it?

I'm asking, because this launch date was announced 3 days ago in the Ethereum developer meeting https://cointelegraph.com/news/phase-zero-code-for-ethereum-pos-transition-can-be-completed-by-june-30-eth-core-devs/amp
