Is there any advantage to authenticating the asymmetric portion of a ciphertext when using RSA-KEM with AEAD?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 10:06 PM PST

When decrypting/verifying my implementation checks that c is in the range 1 < c < n-1 but beyond that I don't see any advantage to validating the asymmetric portion of the ciphertext by including it as part of the associated data for the AEAD scheme.

    Am I missing something?

    Block cipher figures

I was wondering if you could point me out to a good method to write or draw figures for symmetric block ciphers in latex ?
Is there a standard that the academia uses ?

    Thanks

Need help understanding the AES encryption scheme's key schedule

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 11:47 AM PST

As per the Stallings book, the normal decryption of AES has different sequence of transformations [method 1 below], which leads to two separate software or firmware modules and that is undesirable. However, with the interchange of the operations [method 2 below] (as they are equivalent), the encryption and the decryption can be given the same form. However, this second method needs a change in the key schedule. I can't find what this new key schedule is.

Encryption (method 1) :ARKBS, SR, MC, ARK,…..BS, SR, MC, ARK,BS, SR, ARK, Decryption (method 1):ARK, ISR, IBSARK, IMC, ISR, IBS…..ARK, IMC, ISR, IBSARK
Encryption (method 2):ARKBS, SR, MC, ARK,…..BS, SR, MC, ARK,BS, SR, ARK, Decryption (method 2):ARK,IBS, ISR, ARK, IMC…..IBS, ISR, ARK, IMCIBS, ISR, ARK

    school/career question

    Posted: 23 Feb 2019 08:41 AM PST

I am currently getting a 2 year degree in math with plans to transfer to a 4 year university afterwards and complete a degree in cryptography/computing security. As I browse through this sub, a lot of the posts are speaking a different language to me. My question is where is the best place to start learning about crypto, as well as what skills or concepts should I be learning now while I am still in my first 2 years of school. Programming? Any and all help/advice is appreciated.
