13 GPU rig. Lessons learned (the hard-way)

    Posted: 07 Aug 2018 02:17 PM PDT

    Hello,

Been mining since nov 2017 with 3x 13 GPU rigs (39 GPU, mostly 1070, 1080 and 1080ti). I'm sharing my two cents for anyone interested:

    a) Invest time in prep-work! what is the layout? which frames? how many PSUs? how many splitters? this was done, but I underestimated the prepwork. I ended up buying more PSUs with less wattage, were (in my case) fewer PSUs with more wattage would suit better the layout. The prep-work is extremely important and vastly underestimated, especially the layout, # of PSUs units, and # PCIe splitters (so everything fits nice and tidy).

    b) if using windows, CPU and RAM DOES MATTER!!! try using afterburner in a 13 gpu with a celeron and 4gb of ram... it is a pain in the ass! switch to i3/i5 with 8gb and is a cool breeze. For example, when using celerons I was getting a delay in everything. Move a slider, 3 second delay, decrease voltage, 8 second delay. For mining this is not a problem, but for tweaking, it is. Imagine spending 4 hours tweaking your rig when you could have done so in 20 minutes (because of delays). I have not use any other OS, so I'm sure this is a windows thing only.

    c) tweaking = free GPUs (in a sense): with 39GPUs a small increase in efficiency goes a long way. You teak a GPU for 2% gain and thats ok, tweak 39 with 2%-5% increase in each and you will find yourself with "1 or 2 free 1080ti gained by tweaking".

    d) heat is an issue: oh yeah it is, specially if you live in the Caribbean... fortunately I found a well ventilated place where temps are usually at 27c (this is cold for my country). Good ventilation can reduce the temps by a long, long way.

    e) 220/230V is mandatory: see point c, is the same concept. Higher efficiency in one PSU is nice, Higher efficiency in 10 PSUs is nicer .

    f) chasing the dragon is bad idea: I spent months mining new coins trying to chase the next pump. Bad idea, the only good coin I mined that mooned was GIN coin and I sold it 10x cheaper than its ATH. It would have been better for me to just mine ETH with the pill or any other oldschool/popular coin (as equihash before the ASICs).

    g) stability vs profitability (another chasing the dragon): I've also spent many a night tweaking my rigs just to increase a small percentage, this turned fine until I went to work and my rigs were frozen, which means wait till the night to reset them, lower the OC and bring stability. In the long run, stability will always win (I can't use smart plugs or "resetters" for this as I have frequent blackouts in my country and smart plugs or "resetters" DOES NOT turn back on after a blackout, they need a manual input), if you know a solution for this, please let me know.

Anyway, just wanted to share this. I have a lot of more learned lessons, but for now this will suffice as I got to get back at work! hopefully it will be useful for new miners.

    Cheers,

    Afterburner automated change OC?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 01:59 AM PDT

Does Afterburner have any kind of scheduler to automatically change Power to 60% during the night and leave it at 100% during the day? I just got solar panels installed and they're working wonderful, but during the night I want to automatically tone it down. Is this possible?

Can I mine on non-grounded power outlets?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2018 08:48 PM PDT

Hi, my parents house have extra unused un-grounded outlets which seems unsafe to plug in a mining rig. Does anyone know about this? Is it safe to do? Thank you.

How do you feel about the multiple coins who have come out against Nicehash?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2018 01:39 PM PDT

Several coins, including Vertcoin today, have condemned Nicehash as a platform for malicious intent.

Nicehash doesn't seem to be doing anything about the fact that they're an easy platform to use for 51% attacks.

How do you guys feel about Nicehash? Do you think they should do something about being used for malicious intent?

    Mining on a schedule

    Posted: 07 Aug 2018 09:44 AM PDT

What is the best way of turning 2 GPU miners on and off at certain times of the day?

I have 2 x 12 gpu rigs. One is an AMD rig with mixed RX 580 cards and the other is an NVIDIA rig with some 1080 ti, mostly 1070 ti, and a couple of 1060s. The rigs are configured so that they run very stably.

My issue is that in the summer, where I live, it's hot as balls. With the miners directly downstairs from my bedroom, it's getting to the point where it's unbearably hot, even with my AC set to 76F and ceiling fans running full blast. Also, my electric bills last month were nearly $700. Also, mining has b en just barely profitable recently so I've decided to turn them off for a while.

I have the option of switching to a time advantage plan where if I turn off my electric usage in the afternoon, I can have electricity at 5.5 cents per kwh, which would drastically cut down on my costs and make mining great again. However, I can't seem to find software that would allow me to set times when I want to mine and times when I want the miners to shut off, that don't require me to install Windows.

The miners are currently managed using SimpleMiner, which has been awesome, other than the lack of control over on/off times. My questions are:

    1) Are there other software similar to SimpleMiner that would allow me to control on/off times?

    2) Would it be bad for the gpus if I installed a power switch timer that simply turned off the power when I didn't want them to mine?

    Thanks in advance!

    Surge protection with 220v pdu?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2018 05:07 AM PDT

So I'm all set up with my 220v 30a pdu. But I now realize I have no surge protection for my rigs. Any one have any suggestion on what to use? I looked at cyberpower's website (I have their pdu), but did not see any suitable product.

    Honey Miner Payout Not Recieved

    Posted: 07 Aug 2018 12:38 AM PDT

I used HoneyMiner for 48 hours just to test if the software worked and to see if it actually paid out before making it my main software to use. I paid out 48 hours of earnings yesterday. Today I have checked the balance of my wallet and I have received nothing. 0. Any help/advice? I even tweeted at HoneyMiner but no response there.

Random Pci Slots Work and Stop Working

    Posted: 06 Aug 2018 09:27 PM PDT

I have an Asus Z370 motherboard. The pci slots randomly stop working. Yesterday the 4th slot wasn't working. Today morning the 6th slot was working and now the 1st one isn't working. The other slots I mentioned before started working again and the 1st still isn't. All my cards are working as I have tested them in another rig. I have updated bios and applied required settings. I have deleted the drivers and reinstalled. What should I do?
